* Samira Makhmalbaf claims her own spotlight

Newsweek, Oct 19, 1998 - Samira Makhmalbaf is running late for another interview. "This must be what it's like to have a teenager," mutters the New York publicist who has been hired to help promote "The Apple," Makhmalbaf's debut feature film. Her client has a good excuse--she is a teenager. She is also Iranian, and, at 18, the youngest person ever to show a feature work at the New York Film Festival. "The Apple" played there three weeks ago and will open in Germany, Belgium, Italy and other markets over the next few months... FULL TEXT

* Shahin & Sepehr: Virginia concert

Washington Post, Oct 20 - Despite the success they've enjoyed in "smooth jazz" circles, guitarists Shahin Shahida and Sepehr Haddad gave a performance at the Birchmere's Band Stand Friday night not nearly as predictable as ties to that genre might suggest. A curious and often percussive mix of Middle Eastern melodies, Latin rhythms, contemporary dance beats, Western pop themes and fusion jazz coloring, the duo's concert offered a globe-trotting blend of the familiar and the exotic... * Shahin & Sepehr: From myriad travels comes a 'World Cafe'

Washington Post, Oct 16 - WHEN Shahin Shahida was a seventh-grader at the International School of Tehran some 25 years ago, he was a precociously good guitar player, a fact that earned him a pass into the cooler circles of the older kids, like ninth-grader Sepehr Haddad. Sepehr (who, like Shahin, prefers to be called by simply his first name) played a pretty decent guitar too, and the two of them often found themselves playing together. With their fourth CD, "World Cafe," recently released by Higher Octave records, Shahin & Sepehr find their profile high enough in "world beat" circles that they can regularly tour abroad. "We were in Italy this summer and got interviewed on national TV," says Shahin, "and the woman at the station showed us all these magazines with reviews and articles about us. I had no idea we were getting so much attention!"... FULL TEXT
