by Fatollah (not verified) on Fri Mar 20, 2009 02:34 PM PDTI believe, President Obama's gesture was genuine and sincere.
By the way, this is the second time US politician(s) are officially reaching a hand to current Iranian leadership! Only this time with a clear vision.
I believe, Iranian leadership reached a hand to US back in 2002 only when they felt the heat by US forces invading one country after the other. I am not surprised at all, the Mullas only understand force!
The IR will be destroyed from within and not by outside forces. I only hope they won't ruin Iran in the process.
ps! I do not reside in US but this President make me proud, I wish Iran had such a President. Am I dreamin? :-)

Massive Bruno, did you mean for me to read that?
by Zan Amrikai on Fri Mar 20, 2009 01:58 PM PDTAgar barayeh man bood (how to pronounce Norooz), motma'en bashid keh man baladam.
I was talking about how whoever transliterates Persian does not always know the best way to write the Persian word(s) in English so that native English speakers will pronounce it correctly. Most Americans would pronounce Nowruz to rhyme with CowFuzz. THAT is why I say it should be transliterated Norooz, like JJ has it all over iranian.com.
But this is a moot point (Note: this is MOOT not MUTE, kids!) just as Farsi instead of Persian is a moot point.
We linguists get all up in arms about stuff like this.
Asabi (P II) ...
by Internets on Fri Mar 20, 2009 01:52 PM PDTWith all due respect, you DO NOT KNOW (as in absolute certainty) that any war with Iran (any time soon) is inevitable!. What you state is merely your opinion based on an array of negative sentiments (which you are entitled to) combined with some inherent suspicion (a very common Persian trait, myself unfortunately included).
In any case, I do not know as to how accurate or extensive your knowledge of Iranian history may be, but I must admit that my own knowledge of the subject matter is very layman and pedestrian. However, I do not agree with you that the Iranians as a whole nation do not tend to learn anything from history. That is a virtual impossibility and a jaded view point!.
In closing, I live abroad and write in English because I now preferthis life to the one of living in Iran and writing in Farsi. After 30+ years, some of us got totally assimilated by the Evil West <smiles>.
Nowrouzeh Shoma Ham Mobaraarak :-)
I'd make love to Obama...
by Saman on Fri Mar 20, 2009 01:35 PM PDTI know I'm a dude and all that but if I had to pick one man ... it'd be Obama. He makes me proud.
Thank you Mr. President
by speechless (not verified) on Fri Mar 20, 2009 01:35 PM PDTThank you Mr. President for the kind Nowrooz wishes.
You are truely a great leader for reaching out.
We are sure that you are aware that ordinary Iranians love Americans and love peace in the world.
On the other hand, the ruling party in Iran, the Mullahs practicing Sharia faction of Islam, detest all values held by the West. They also are against human rights and in particular women's right. The Mullahs also wanted to ban the Nowrooz celebrations because they consider it a Pegan ritual as it has nothing to do with Islam. These ruling mullahs are the Shia equivalent of the Suni Taliban.
Iranians are sick of the Mullahs, however it has not been possible to overthrow the regime due to these three key and unfortunate realities: 1) lack of a single leader uniting Iranians against the regime 2) increasing number of drug addictions 3) brutal backlash of the regime and imprisonment against the slightest expression of freedom.
We want the brural regime in Iran to end. That is our Nowrooz wish.
Thank you!

by aaminian on Fri Mar 20, 2009 12:30 PM PDT... Mr. President! This has been a long-awaited speech but I hope it doesn't stop there! Rhetoric has to lend itself to action. I voted for you because I believed that (among other things) you'll be THE catalyst for renewed relations with Iran. What I've witnessed so far though makes me believe it IS the same ole, same ole. On the dawn of your 59th day in office (yes, I am keeping track!) you renewed the 30-year-long sanctions gainst Iran. So, please, please, please, spare me the Sa'adi recital spiel and prove to me that my voting for you was not a waste.
internet look at my side
by asabi (not verified) on Fri Mar 20, 2009 11:46 AM PDTi am looking at this matter as an iranian.let me just tell you this I know that the war is inevitable and mr obama has only come to do what george w bush could not:selling the war to its citizens and the world.first thing :he restores the trust and faith of its people in usa government.second:he improves their life and becomes a hero to follow third:he reaches his hand to iranian regime and socalled tries everything for peace 4th:he sells the war to its people with this very same excuse:|you saw me try for peace I didniot want to send our children to war but this regime left me no choice.thats all what this super charming good talking man will do.
I am angry because we iranians just dont learn nothing from history and are very easy to mislead and manipulate thats why you and me are now living abroad and writing in english

Sanctions? Not only have they been able to get around that, they've strengthened their position by holding onto all the major avenues of black market revenue.
Lets be realistic here hamvatan.
How to write "NewDay" in English
by Massive Bruno (not verified) on Fri Mar 20, 2009 11:37 AM PDTwhen "Nowruz" is used, it should be kept in mind that the "now" part is pronounced exactly like the "now" in "know", a nice, long O, with a little "w" on the end of it.
Not good enough
by mahmoudg on Fri Mar 20, 2009 11:19 AM PDTMr. President. although we appreciate your gesture, but first, it is not eid mobarak, it should be norooz pirooz. Eid is an arabic word. second, any re-appraochment with this regime is tantamount to putting a stamp of approval on terrorism. You may not have the money, the American people may not have the stomach, the world may not have the patience, to open up another front on the war on terror. But he stark reality is that unless you help remove this regime from power, your legacy on fighting terrorism will be tarnished. These people have no interest in opening dialogue with you, their only raison d'eter is to portray America what we call a "lou lou khor khoreh". Your only salvation to save the world from terrorism is to deny this regime to get its hand on the WMD all the way up to and including attacking their strategic defense and command and control sites, leading to the removal of this regime from power. Your gestures, although sits well with most Persians, are nothing by empty rhetoric. At the end of the day the stark reality is, Mullahs are still terrorists and one way or another must be removed from power. Next to AIG and the economy, removal of the IRI from power should be at the helm of your foreign policy agenda.

Asabi...
by Internets on Fri Mar 20, 2009 11:11 AM PDTAsabi,
While your message may have some hints of validity to it, the manner in which you presented your opinion was quite shallow and disparaging. Look, there is nothing wrong with having hope and extending an olive branch toward the Iranian populous in spite of the IRI hardline leadership.
President Obama is indeed a very charming and highly educated man. These traits may (they have so far) serve him considerably well, when dealing with International issues. However, I would also caution against the weapon of "extreme charm" as the old Persian proverb goes: "Baa Panbeh Sar boreedan!".
Nevertheless, the WH, the new administration and the new President is absolutely on the correct path with this new "charm offensive" to reel in the very cantankerous IRI regime. If it all fails, all other options are still on the table as they have always been there. The U.S. never backed away from that statement, so I don't really understand as to why you'd think that there is something special about your smarts with regards to your comments?!.

ganselmi, Shimon Peres gives your message too!
by Jaleho on Fri Mar 20, 2009 10:54 AM PDT"Israel's Peres sends audio greeting to Iran 48 minutes ago
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli President Shimon Peres has sent a rare greeting to the people of Iran praising them and saying they would be better off without their hard-line leadership.
In the taped audio message, Peres lauds Iran's ancient culture and urges what he calls the "noble Iranian nation" to "return to its rightful place among developed nations."
The greeting marking Iran's Nowruz holiday was broadcast Friday on the Voice of Israel's Farsi-language station. The station is beamed to Iran, but it is unclear how many Iranians had heard it.
It coincided with President Barack Obama's video message to Iran in which he appealed to Iranians to shift away from decades of confrontation."
As Shimon Peres continues to make believe that US president is Bush not Obama, he still has to follow like a good dog! There are times that the tail wags the dog, there are times that the dog won't allow that!
The report worries how many Iranians might have heard Peres' messgae. I think a better question would be how many Iranian would give a rat's ass about Peres message!!

happy new year
But wouldn't it have been cool if he'd dressed as Hajji Firooz?
by Zan Amrikai on Fri Mar 20, 2009 10:08 AM PDTWhy oh why did they spell it "Nowruz?" I just HATE the way that looks in English! "Norooz" looks so much nicer, and actually promotes correct pronunciation of the word. "Nowruz" gets pronounced NOW (rhymes with "cow") RUHZ (rhymes with "cuz"). I vote for Norooz as the best transliteration. (Wonder if my fellow Linguistics nut, Rosie, agrees.)
I heard about the video on BBC radio. I am glad that our President acknowledged this holiday.
WOW, he even said Eideh Shoma Mobarak!
Afarine! Let's send the man some of the baklava I made yesterday morning!
