Obama's Nowruz message

Addressed to the people and government of Iran

White House -- This year, the President wanted to send a special message to the people and government of Iran, acknowledging the strain in our relations over the last few decades. After committing his administration to a future of honest and respectful diplomacy, he addresses Iran's leaders directly.

I understand what you say but I think 30 years of talking solely to the Iranian people has not helped us very much. It's about time for new options. I hate our regime but the reality of the matter is that they are there and wont easily go away. We must deal with them if we want to get anywhere...

I believe he is very genuine!

All current politics aside, Obama has a deep understanding of the suffering of third world nations and those who suffered colonialsm. His humanity stems from his vast knowledge. In my last blog "Reza Phalavi and New American Reality," I quoted a page from Obama's book "Dreams of My Father," which shows how different he is when it comes to understanding Iran and Iranians.

The passage is from his student time. It reflects how in understanding people's suffering, he's so much closer to us than the typical apathetical average American.  THAT coming from an American President who usually comes from the mind set of making coup d'etats around the word, using bombs to establish American hegemony, or even one like Truman who found one of his most delightful moments of life following the nuclear blast of Naksaki and Hiroshima....this is quite a change!!

I Say This as an Obama Voter:

I appreciate the spirit of his message but have concerns about some of the wording, especially when he says that the IRI deserves a place in the international community. It would have been much better to offer such overtures to the Iranian people not their oppressors.

It's also important to note -- for our IRI apologist friends at this site -- that Obama is trying to renew American soft power here. Disincentives for the regime's dangerous behavior are still very much on the table. Soft power isn't all just about pretty words. And, of course, behind that soft power is the awesome might of the US armed forces, which though under strain recently, is still the very best deterrent to rogue state and non-state actors.

This was awesome. I wish Obama was Iranian :( Remember Bush's crappy norooz messages? "Laura and I wish you a happy Norooz. Happy Iranian New Year. We love you, not the mollahs. Merci"

This guy is talking about peace and literature? Wow. THis Obama! WOW. Makes Reza Pahlavi's message look like a shriveled you know what.

I sensed true goodwill. I hope it is a sign of better times between our two countries. Thank you Mr. President and very best Noroozi wishes to you and the American people too.

A good man

This could not have been an easy speech for an American President.  He is either a truly great man or a pragmatist with an Iron will.
