Excellent question. Like Iranians, Arabs had very strong memory. The prophet's companions had memorized all verses of the book & Othmon with Ali on his side compiled all that in writing after the Prophet's death. He was only 62 years when he passed away and did not have a chance to do it himself, considering that it took 25 years for the Quran to be completely revealed.
