Generally most people in the world are against the atomic bomb, unless it is their own country. One reason is the sense of security that shields their borders from foreign bullets. One can argue that these tools are irrelevant for internal struggles. Think again!
Countries that are secured, whether by international military pact, large hardware/fire power, or nuclear bomb, are less likely to hide their true nature behind the enemy curtain. Most probably governments are not going to stop their usual slogans, but the focus of their citizens will dramatically turn to internal struggles. They will be more relaxed that there will be no foreign takeover or preemptive strike. And this can be a good thing.
Generally the problem with Iran has been its lack of military power to stop the possible foreign interventions and threats. The only solution that remained for our twenty-century leaders was to deal with the devil. Iran was a weak country and Soviets in the north along with British and her allies in the south were continuously undermining Iranian territorial integrity. The Iranian government then, realized that the country was a mess and under threat. Reza Shah I, saw no solution but to secretly deal with Hitler. For Reza Shah I Hitler was the lesser evil, and perhaps based on the Iranian historical data, he was correct. In politics, morality matters when you have control of your own destiny.
Now time has changed but Iran still struggles to free itself from the bullies. Internally Iranian harsh social policies will not be affected at first. However the external changes will greatly influence the entire game board and eventually the internal landscape forms new pathways. I see many positives with developing the Bomb!
If the government of Iran is not thinking about building the bomb today, they are making a big mistake. Go ahead, build it and build it fast.

Islam is our nuclear weapon
by No Fear on Sun Jun 13, 2010 10:27 PM PDTWe are currently in a position to inflict serious harm to any country that attacks us. Any country who dares to attack Iran with unconventional weapons, will receive a similar response through unconventional means as well. Any use of nuclear weapons against Iran could translate to the release of bio and chemical agents in populated cities without any direct link to Iran.
We have increased the cost of an attack on Iran by any country to a point that it does not make any economical or political sense to any country in the world, to attack us. This has been achieved without any upgrades to our conventional military since we witness how useless they can be when confronted by a vastly superior army.
The greatest weapon in our hand is our religion and beliefs. ( Pay attention here ). Iran has become the religious leader of the middle east and we own the streets in our neighborhood. Our strongest weapon is our bonds with deep rooted popular groups who look up to us for guidance and support. There is no military power that could crush a popular movement. how would you find your target? How good would a nuclear tipped cruise missile be? With a trained group of 500 militias , you can bog down an army of 50000 effectively and interfere with the objectives of an occupying army thus dramatically increasing the cost of occupation or an attack while enjoying the benefit of sympathy throughout the world.
Supporting freedom movements in the middle east is our duty as a muslim nation. We have made known that any nation that harbours our enemy, will be targeted and subsequently, will have to deal with a wave of groups calling for an establishment of an Islamic republic in their countries. We have proved our capabilities in this regard and we are getting exceedingly efficient in it evey day.
Islam is our nuclear weapon and it won't cost us a penny to have God on our side. While becoming a nuclear state will make our neighbors hostile towards us and it will trigger a nuclear arm race in the region, Islam will make us closer together and will help other nation to be liberated from their corrupt governments.
The Crux of the issue (to No Fear)
by marhoum Kharmagas on Sun Jun 13, 2010 09:40 PM PDTIF US and Israel rely ONLY on their conventional weapons, you are correct, besides other reasons, Iran does not have any moral reason to respond to a conventional attack with nukes. However, neither U.S nor Israel have phased out use of nukes particularly the use of tactical nukes against Iran. .... let's say U.S/Israel use their tactical nukes to wipe out a number of large Iranian military facilities, without nukes Iran will have to surrender, ....., that is why U.S/Israel are so obsessed with preventing Iran from EVEN having the capability of making the bomb. As Dr. Sahimi said:
"The crux of the issue about Iran's nuclear program is, in my opinion, as follows: If Iran has the ability to make the bomb on a short notice,
it becomes unattackable. That is not something that the US and Israel
can tolerate. They want to be the hegemone of the Middle East."
Abarmard,
by No Fear on Sun Jun 13, 2010 08:38 PM PDTLets say we have a nuclear weapon and still be attacked by another nation through conventional means, ( israel hitting our power plant ) , will you use your dooms day weapon against that country?

Abarmard,
by No Fear on Sun Jun 13, 2010 07:11 PM PDTThen why spend close to a 100 billion dollars for it , if we won't use it?
If you mean the bomb will put us in a stalemate position, we can be in a stalemate position with one percent of the cost of a bomb.

And who
by MRX1 on Sun Jun 13, 2010 04:59 PM PDTis supposed to become utterly scared of mullah's bomb? Russian or American? french or British? or Isreal that folks like you hate so much? These countries have thousends of them and far better technology of delivering/dropping them if ever they need to do so, which means by the time the mulah's manage to drop one bomb some where, hundreds of bombs have already been dropped on Iran!! I guess Duabi may become scared and perhaps mullah's bomb will stop them from calling Persian Gulf Arabian Gulf! or may be Afghnistan will become scared and they will stop sending labor to iran (Which means Iranian kids have to do all the hard work and pick up fruits from the trees), or may be republic of Azerbijan may become scared and they may recognize Iranian rights in Capsian sea (Not in your wildest dream!) but then again as they say " Arezou bar javanan eyb nist"

by zoroast100 on Sun Jun 13, 2010 03:58 PM PDTDear Abarmard, I agree; we should not mix Iran's internal affairs with the externals; people will eventually prevail against internal tyranies; but disadvantageous nations can never thwart the ouside aggressors; if one nation has the bomb, then any other nation has the right to have it. So, from the words of great Ferdowsi, one can deduct, if a strong (government ) is not truthfull, then is in the state of fear!

No to a weak Iran
by Gypsy on Sat Jun 12, 2010 10:48 AM PDTI am old enough to remember that, the previous government was criticized for buying American arms and spending the oil money foolishly. At end of the Iran – Iraq war, beside the heroics of the Iranian people, the other major component of this successful defense of Iran was the same planes and armaments. Regardless of the government in place there should always be an emphases to stay strong. After all being weak is never a sought after quality.
A few points
by Abarmard on Sat Jun 12, 2010 07:17 AM PDT-Nuclear bomb is best for this regime to obtain it, since "other" systems, if any, would be more acceptable to US demands.
-If nothing, at least we should get the power that Iranians always wanted from this system.
-The bomb has no negative relationship with people's struggle for rights and freedom
-US or its allies attack on sites with the bomb can allow Iran to push for faster result, openly
-And finally, if even all countries in the ME had the bomb the result would be:
-No foreign military in the region
-More responsive governments
-More unified regional strategies based on economics and geographical realities
-No petty wars or terrorist activities
-The terrorism would change to social uprising for taking charge of their own future.
The benefits outweigh costs in every aspect.
Are You Sure YOUR BOMB will be Earthquake Proof ?
by Darius Kadivar on Sat Jun 12, 2010 12:55 AM PDTROYALTY AND THE PEOPLE:Shah and Shahbanou Visit Earthquake Victimes (VIDEO)
Strategically, having A-bomb is useless.
by No Fear on Fri Jun 11, 2010 11:55 PM PDTBuilding a nuclear bomb is a very expensive project when you consider the entire project ( from research to engineering ), has to be done indigenously and by our own resources ( not like many other countries who were helped to get there ). Some experts estimate the cost to be around 25 billion dollars without any delivery system. Building a delivery system ( like an inter continental missile ) will cost you more billions to develope.
Double the above cost when you have to hide the program from inspectors and spy satelites, and now you have a big " fuck you " weapon in your possession.
By triggering a nuclear arm race in the region and by doing so impowering very weak neighbors to obtain their own nuclear weapon ( a lot easier and faster than us due to deeper pockets), you will eventually lose your dominant position in the neighborhood through conventional means. Now everyone has equal power to destroy one another. ( imagine UAE with a bomb and threatening Iran with it over some islands and you get the picture).
But most importantly, the use and deployment of nuclear weapon against any nation will effectively tarnish our image throughtout the world and make us hated for the entire remaining history of mankind. So , why build it if you are not going to use it, under any circumstances?
Now , there are other alternatives;
Supporting freedom fighters throughout the region comparatively is a hell of a lot cheaper and you can effectively destabilize the region and halt world economy without putting your country under a retaliatory nuclear attack. This war doesn't have to be fought on your soil. You also have a very good chance to change the governments in those hostile countries and enjoy friendly governments to yours by supporting "real democracies" and helping those nations against their puppet governments. You will enjoy the support of people in the middle east and can easily help nations against their corrupt governments. Islam is the key that bonds us together.
But the use ( possession ) of nuclear weapons would eliminate your chance of making any new friends in our hostile neighborhood. You will alieniate yourself and create powerful rivals and enemies at your borders.
I sincerely hope you and those who think like you , change your opinion on this issue.

by reader1 on Fri Jun 11, 2010 01:07 PM PDTIran's Dilemma: If it's hopeless then you've got nothing to
by Mola Nasredeen on Fri Jun 11, 2010 12:42 PM PDTworry about. The new sanctions against Iran has created a situation that requires a choice between options that are equally unfavorable. Western powers and Israel will not be happy with any independent government in the region, they want regime change in Iran. They know Islamic Repubic will not bend over for them. They may attack Iran in the final stage of this political game but they wont be able to overthrow it.
Look at Afghanistan, they cannot sustain that war for long as it is. Iraq and Afghanistan wars cost USA's tax payers 1 million dollars per soldier a year and there are hundreds of thousands of them. We borrow the money from China to continue those wars and now Nato generals are praying for Taleban to make peace with them. The situation would be the same with Iran, they can damage Iran but will not be able to change this regime.

We know
having the Bomb doesn't grantee survival of a government (e.g. Soviet
Union). Having the Bomb or at least the knowledge to build one will place
Iran in a more secure and stronger position. Just imagine a Taliban ruled
Pakistan with close affiliation to Saudi Arabia. A weak Iran will be in
danger of being overrun. Strong Iran is good for Iran and her future.

by Onlyiran on Fri Jun 11, 2010 10:26 AM PDTDon't be surprised. All of these cloaked IRI supporters want the bomb. This is just a Freudian slip. They all talk about IRI's "right to nuclear energy", etc., but when it comes down to it, that's just smoke and mirrors. They want the bomb and they want it now. There are several reason for that. First, they want the IRi to catch up to Israel. The second is that they hate the West and want to match it. Third reason is that they know that if the IRI has the bomb, it will last forever. That's why you see all these efforts on their part. "Niloufar Parsi" even once had a slip of the tongue when he said that the IRI should have "nuclear power" as a "deterrent". :-)))
Cat's out of the bag now...
by Cost-of-Progress on Fri Jun 11, 2010 10:08 AM PDTSo...your position is that if they build the bomb, it's better for the iranian people as the regime will be secure and eventually change for the better
So that's it. All these years it was because they were unsecure that they were brutalizing their people, stealing billions, disregarding their heritage and jeopardizing Iran's position in the international arena.
How many more executions, rapes, murders and beatings do you think it'll be before the Islamic "reform" happens? Do you think there'll be such entity as "iran" left by then, or will everyone be speaking arabic?
Your hatered of the west has fueled your support for these anti-nationalist goons - Perhaps if you go live among the divine, you can guide them change their ...how did you put it.. "harsh social policies".
..For crying outloud....
