Iran, Freedom of Expression: My freedom of voice

"Freedom is like oxygen. We do not think about it until we do not have it." - Wu'er Kaixi, Chinese freedom fighter

Imagine a devil

Forbidding a rose

To perfume the air.

Imagine a fool

Ripping out the wings

Of a butterfly.

Imagine dark clouds

Cloaking the bright sun

Everlastingly.

I know of roses

Half-dead butterflies

Dark suns and daughters.

I know of fathers

Banning their daughters

To learn read and write

For fear of finding

Them sending love notes

To latent lovers.

What is a flower

Without its display

Of fragrant beauty?

What is a butterfly

Without fluttering

Over pollen grains?

What is a woman

Without her trained mind

Her uncensored tongue?

Born of a shared act

In constant demand

For defence, I prize

My freedom of voice!

Imagine a fool

Ripping out the wings

Of a butterfly.

A fool? Does anybody remember that guy who killed and barbecued one of swans in Hyde Park London?... another proud Iranian if I recall correctly. He is probably now posting in IC!

Beautiful poem Azadeh. Thanks.

Something about those women and butterflies

by I Have a Crush on Alex Trebek on

They are too beautiful to fathom. For some, they stand by and admire them. For others, they have to possess it or restrict it. Beauty can do this to people.

Thank you for your poem. Thank you for mentioning Wu'er Kaixi, the Chinese Uyghur student movement activist, who survived Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989.
