by ebi amirhosseini
22-Sep-2009

Souri, Avaznia

by jamshid on

Souri, Sorry to hear about your relative. War disablities could be physical and psychological as well. Sometimes the psychological ones are more painful and disabling than the physical ones.

Avaznia: You are being modest. In a war like that, every effort and every role is as important as the next one. So I don't believe at all that you should think you failed. Just by the virtue of being in those infernal fields and doing your job, you succeed in contributing to the greater cause.

I am humbled by your comment, however I do not deserve it as I did not fight wholeheartedly becuase I did not consider it a patriotic move at that stage.  This is besides the fact that those who fought in the first few years of the war were and still are the truly outstanding heroes who invested their lives and health and well-beings to safeguard the sacred Land of Every Jewel.  While the whole credit goes to them, my outmost effort was to safeguard the lives of the most vulnerables of the society who were sent to that inferno.  I believe I failed in that respect too, as many of them fell to the power of the forces which went beyond my control.

People have different ways to deal with trauma. Those first 6 years after the revolution were the toughest time for my family and myself (I am sure you can guess why)

People deal with painful situations in different ways, mine was a very successful attempt to block bitter memories.

In time, I have learned to deal with it in small steps, but seeing a reminder like this one brings back the haunting memories of a huge amount of pain.

with respect to you and to all who have been brave in facing the realities that I was too fragile to face at the time.

Souri

That was great Jamshid!

by Souri on

I truly appreciated your wise comment. You are right. How could we forget the ones who survived but are having a miserable life today because of their physical or mental disabilities! We have a case in our distant family. A once soldier man who has became paranoid and stay long hours in his room and get out only in the middle of the night to go to the kitchen to eat something. He is always hiding from the crowd.

Thanks Jamshid jan, for reminding us this important fact.

Honoring the fallen

by jamshid on

I've got a few things to say, but first, Manouchehr Avaznia, dear ex-compatriot, although I don't see eye to eye with you in politics, I want to stand up and salute you for risking it all, and having served your country during the war.

To all others, I wanted to say while we should always remember and honor the martyrs of the war, we should not forget those who fought in the war, and survived it with a dismembered body or otherwise with a permanent disablity.

Some of these who had close ties with certain mosques or bonyaads or similar, were well cared for by the government, probablly until even today. But there were many unfortunate ones, the majority, that were simply abandoned by the government after the war ended, as it could not or did not want to afford the high expenses of caring for the disabled survivors.

These survivors are living miserable and painful lives both physically and psychologically. They have a low life expectancy and live in poverty for most of their lives. Some of you who have visited Iran might have seen one of them here and there, specially if you visited smaller cities.

You might have seen a man who once stood tall, rifle in hand, reduced to a beggar in a street corner, and who is not only abandoned by the government, but by the people too, people some of whom consider them a "nuisance" and might even use an offensive language to drive them away.

These people forgot quickly that in the past, these "nuisances" had defended them with their lives, and today they may be suffering inside everyday due to their disablities. But unfortunately, these survivors don't have a voice among their not so compassionate people.

I think honoring the dead is not the only thing, or the most useful thing, we could do. But honoring the disabled survivors of the war who are still among us definitely is.

You may ask how could you honor them. You could contact your relatives and friends or perhaps government offices in Iran and have them identify one of these survivors, just only one. Then send him a pack of gifts, or money, or if it's appropriate, a used motorized wheelchair.

Doing this is all it takes, even if it is only for one person and only for one time.

War is the most horrible thing, but we should remember that for some, it remains horrible everyday, even long after it has ended.

Do not forget these survivors. Honor them while they are still alive and still among you.

This is a tough one

by Mehrban on

My deepest gratitude and respect to all fallen patriots of Iran regardless of their politics;  monarchists, tudeh, nationalists, greens, basiji, sepaah, mojaheds, and regular civilians that died for the love of their country Iran in their hearts.  I hope we can someday show them that their sacrifice was not in vain.

May they all rest in peace.  I am painfully aware that no matter what I say, it will not do justice to the magnitude of their sacrifice.

Thank you Ebi for this blog.

May they rest in peace.  Thanks Ebi for the remembrance.  I agree.  I think these brave patriotic souls fought for a free Iran against Arab/Islamic tyranny. Ironically the IRI exploits their deaths for the very cause I believe they fought against.

Although the thug regime marks them as religious martyrs, many of these brave figthers fought for their country - NOT for Islam, Not for the so called revolution.

Never forget that.

Dear Ebi, I really don't know what to say...as I have so much to say about this macabre remembrance.

In a sense, the war killed us all a bit, with a bang or just slowly...partially or completely, I think, I'd say.
