In an entertaining match Iran came from behind to defeat Iraq 2-1 in Group D of 2010 Asian Cup in Qatar.
Mobali and Rezaei had solid performances and each scored one goal. The conditioning of the Iranian players were superb (8% body fat!)
In the other Group D match, North Korea and UAE tied 0-0.
Iran will play N. Korea on Saturday at 5:15 AM Pacific time. No partying on Friday night (for the players, that is!)
Congratulations to Afshin Gotbi and all Iranian players and fans.
Here are the goals.

by Doctor mohandes on Tue Jan 11, 2011 04:29 PM PSTthat eeez not what you said!!!
I deeessagree that they did not have the strategy. There were at least some hints of having some sort of organization, as a result of which the ball would fall right on the lap of sangeen shooters. Their defense was much more cohesive and coordinated and effective than ours.
The top two teams in bioth groups, c and d, will meet in the second round.

by Faramarz on Tue Jan 11, 2011 04:21 PM PSTWhen I said that the Iraqis respected Iranian players, I meant that half of them play for Iranian clubs, and they knew the Iranian players and feared them. That's why they fouled them so much!
By lack of strategy I meant that their game had no purpose, no lateral movements, no establishing control in the middle, etc.
Now, how did India got into this? India is in group C and so far they are Haparoot! It is very very bad for Chandra Bashoo!

I could not agree more with you on that. However, This time around it was different. He made some Be ja and timely substitutions and before it was too late. That was a good move. Before, He would have waited until the last freaking 5 minutes to make some key changes.
Faramarz
As true as that maybe, But the thing that struck me was they would not take their time, concentrate and aim, before taking the shot. I mean, It should not matter how much of a late bloomer these guys are, they are professional nontheless.
They committed fouls outta respect?? Holy crap. can you imagine what would hava happenedhad there been no respect??? They were so proud that AFC had picked one of the best and youngest refrees for this match. The iranians i mean.
I did notice some great defense , Awsome coverage by their defense line, and they did not do too bad on the strategy front either. after all, all those hard core shots opportunities must have been provided by nothing but a brilliant strategy and it was not all done by numero 10... at any rate. It was a good match.
Now let's go take on India! those suckers weren't too bad either. they are fast.
I have a feeling that we are about to see even more surprises the next round.
congratulation

by Faramarz on Tue Jan 11, 2011 03:39 PM PSTWatching a small country like Qatar holding a tournament like this in beautiful stadiums, nice coverage and everything working so well made me sad about Iran. These guys are spending their oil money to promote their country and put it on the world stage. The IR Regime in contrast is ruining our beloved country and its talented and brave youth.
Khaak bar Sar Jomhouri Eslami!

by Faramarz on Tue Jan 11, 2011 03:30 PM PSTDoctor Mohandes,
1. Iranian players don't know how to shoot! Their body, their posture, the way they approach the ball is all wrong. They just throw their leg at the ball and pray!
One learns how to shoot at an early age. In Iran most players are dribblers on small fields. That's why Iran is in top 5 in Futsal, but ranks low in soccer.
I spent some time in Argentina and watched 10-12 year-olds play. They know how to shoot at that age. We learn how to shoot in our 20's. That's late.
2. Five of the Iraqi players actually are on Iranian clubs so they have a lot of respect for our players. That's why they fouled so much.
Iraqis had strong and skilled players, but they didn't show me much in the way of strategy. They were just looking for no. 10 to do his magic and he was well covered, with the exception of the first goal.

Dear Red Wine
by Faramarz on Tue Jan 11, 2011 03:17 PM PSTSharaab Aziz,
Thank you for your analysis.
First of all, I have to say that the Qataris are doing a great job running this tournament. The stadiums look great. The fields are awesome and everything is working like clockwork. The TV coverage is very crisp. They are showing the world that they deserved to host 2022 WC.
I think that Iran played well today. With the exception of the misjudgment by Rahmati that gave an easy goal to Iraq, everyone looked good.
Every single free kick by Mobali looked great and Rezaie was constantly harassing the defenders. I am not sure if Gholami is the best center forward for this team. I would have taken him out earlier and put Khalatbari on the wing.
Hajisafi also surprised me. He played a consistent game. The interesting thing about this team is that it doesn't have a superstar. You never know who is going to score. The defenders actually look dangerous when they attack on the head balls.
Based on what I have seen so far, Iran, S. Korea and Australia are the top teams. Unfortunately, only 2 of them will make it to the semis.
Why are you surprised that Saudis propagandize against Iran's
