The HIGHEST offense

Jahanshah Javid

You've all heard the news by now. A Somali Muslim has tried to kill a Danish cartoonist who drew a cartoon of prophet Mohammad.

Muslims must condemn acts of violence in their name in the strongest possible terms in order to send a clear message to fellow followers, and the rest of the world, that even the most offensive speech (writing, cartoon, film...) does not justify killing or physically harming anyone.

The Mohammad cartoon, Salamn Rushdie's Satanic Verses and the like are offensive to Muslims. But violence, especially murder, is the HIGHEST offense.

Demonstrate, write, blog, draw your own cartoon in response to whatever that has offended you. But when you lift a finger against this cartoonist or that writer and try to go as far as ending his or her life, you no longer have a moral or legal leg to stand on. You become a criminal/murderer.

Islam is widely perceived by the rest of the world as a religion that condones or even incites violence whenever one of its "sacred" tenants or icons is ridiculed, or even questioned. If this attitude does not change, if Muslims themselves do not condemn violent retaliation, they will continue to be looked upon with fear and suspicion.

In the Islamic Republic today, there are many examples where the law of the land calls for capital punishment for those who say the "wrong" thing. Currently there's a growing chorus calling for the execution of protesters and opposition leaders whose "crime" has been to question the results of a fraudulent election or to challenge the authority and legitimacy of the supreme leader. Judiciary officials have threatened to put a number of people to death to deter others who dare to speak out and protest. In other words the continuation of violence and murder in the name of Islam.

MM, you're naive, why should Moslems surrender??

by mannya2001 on

If Fatwas and religious edicts are what move the masses and if these masses can translate into action...why should Muslims be naive to give that up...

Once upon a time there were 4 million NAtive Americans, today barely 100,000.  So tell me, when was the last time you spent the night thinking about the dead Natives.??

Well, we won't put overselves in a position where generations from now they will talk about the dead Muslims in history books only...

If you want to strip Muslims of Fatwas, you better be ready to trade in some major weapons that we can defend ourselves with...

What a bright philosophy! Wow!

Who is the Chappi here then?

If it is enough for you to bring all the ancestry and shenasnameh of the people whom you don't like on the table, then let me explain myself to you. I have been raised in a family who hated politics!

My father was a modest Muslim who always practiced his religious duties and also drank in any party occasion ! He always told his children : If one day one of you goes to the prison for politics, don't count on me to come and visit you :)

My mother never did rouzeh and namaz until she got 55 and now she is a real believer, which amuse all of us!

I have been doing rouzeh and namaz for the fun of it until I became a teen......

Anything else, again?

Mr. Javid. The regime of the unelected supreme being - or leader - will not go silent into the night. The shear brutality of these thugs justified by the wrath Islam has for anything and everything decent will make sure that they turn the streets of Iran into a bloodbath as evident by the events on Sunday, Ashoora, before they concede to defeat.

I totally agree with you on your analysis on Moslems NOT speaking out against violence and brutality in their religion as means to reach an end, and have before mentioned that fact to some zealot readers defending the "fairness" of Islam on this site. Thank you for your thoughts.

Silence can be deadly

by MM on

When I first saw the 9/11 horrible acts, I said to myself, well, I am not Egyptian nor Saudi, I am not Sunni and I do not belong to Al Qaeda.  OK, I am sad, sorry, but really not my problem.  I will just go back to work.

Before you knew it, the whole Muslim community was put on trial by the media, and in a flash, the neo-cons coined "the axis of evil" and guess who was smack in the middle of the pack.  I agree with the bloggers here.  The Muslim clerics need to confer and declare:

* What is Islam?  If it is a religion of peace, then let’s live in peace?

* Is suicide bombing and killing of innocent sanctioned by Islam?

* De-fatwa all the previous fau-twas.  Except maybe the Jihad against the Islamists (ok, no more fatwas).

*........etc.

*........etc.

If the chicken-poo Muslim clerics will not do it, we can start an electronic signature campaign, by at least the Iranian Diaspora, about how we think about all this violence in Islam, including what is going on in the name of God in Iran.

Although this is a very serious subject and initiates the long debated views on free speech and religion etc, I am grateful for the comic relief as seen below:

Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime

I wich one could explain this phenomenon..!?

by Everybody Loves Somebody ... on

Isn't it ironic that those of us who were born and lived in the strict Islamic families have over the years managed to develop so much disgust and resentment towards everything and anything Islamic including the Islamic Republic regime and its supporters!?

But, at the same time, those who were born and raised in the non-religious families (potentially leftist/Chapie/communist) have managed to develop so much love, affection, and understanding towards Islam, terrorism, death, and destruction to the point that they would justify murder against innocent people in the name of justice for Palestinians against Zionists!?

I wonder what and where the causes for this branching process are and come from from?
Maybe it's because our fellow Chapies miserably lost the war against the West and the only hope they can cling on is that the Muslim ideology one day will bring that universal society and government that they may "Ghapp Bezanand Azz Akhoondha" and become in control of!?

dear vildemose

by Souri on

Don't ask  me honey! I don't know it either :)

I am not the speak person of the Islam nor the IRI.

All I can say is, I truly believe in the freedom for everybody to believe in what they wants, as long as it does not harm anybody else and do not take their freedom.

What I am saying here, is all the Man's miseries come from the struggle for holding the Power and exerting this power over other people.

So anything can be used and misused here in the name of religion...and these are the poor "religion believers" who have to pay the price.

I just wanted us to make a difference between those notions here. If we condemn a religion (Islam) it means we are taking freedom of the million people who want to believe in this religion. That's all.

PS- You didn't say what means Vildemose?  :)

When Does Humanity draw the line?!

by Monda on

I agree with JJ, David ET and many others, in that We well Know what murders have been/ are being committed in the name of religion.  When there is violence involved in shutting down idiological differences, should humanity be doomed to accepting religious regression to barbarism?  How has humanity evolved then, Bahram G, from the dark ages?  Drawing cartoons of Buddha, Moses or Jesus never got anyone murdered, did it?

When is Islam willing to grow up from its shagh ol ghamar delusions?

Your comments are not even worthy of response beyond what follows:

There is (was) a civil discussion going on here until you started throwing labels and then put the burden on me to prove I am not what you call me! Sounds like Islamic Republic mentality: Guilty until proven innocent.

FYI: Neither of my parents were Jewish, neither am I nor do I believe in any religion or religious based isms.

God had no religion and neither do I.

As for my knowledge of Islam, I have read many many books by famous Muslims and met more (published) Muslims than you do, including whole Quran and its different understandings

Now stop throwing unsubstantiated labels at people , grow up, be civil and don't make things personal.

My view of the word Zionist, has been already clarified in this site (but you were not there :-(

This is not what you think. I am talking about the political Zionism.
Zionists are the people who approve Israel politics and  have zero tolerance for others (Muslim).

No, Not every Jew is Zionist. Not every single Israeli is Zionist.

What you are stating in your comment below, is not so far from AN's action (then don't blame him). Both are giving a false meaning from a fact. This is called demagogy, dear.

You can take the word Zionist, for what you want, but don't put this words in my mouth. Okay? Thanks.

If you are talking to me:

Everything in this world (from the philosophy to the plastic :)) is and can be misused by Man, for his own interests.

You can not blame the religion, but the ones who use this religion as a tool for keeping their power.

A religion,is a philosophy. It can't be good or bad by themselves. It is the use of it by Man which give them a sense, being a bad or a good one.
BTW: I can never pronounce your name. I don't know what it means. Would you please tell me what it means or what is its origin ? Thank you so much.

The funniest thing is that

by benross on

The funniest thing is that the word Zionist is being used as a catch word, as it is by nature, inherently hostile to your stance.

Every single Israeli is a Zionist. Because it is the founding idea of establishing the state of Israel. There are of course different interpretation of Zionism amongst Israelis. But using this word as a catch word is only used by those who like Ahmadinejad, want it to be wiped out of the map. Are you one of those?

I take a Zionist for a hate-monger, warmonger revengeful pitiful 'true Muslim' anytime. How about you?

I read the article in  which the Danish Muslim community did distance themselves from the attack.

"The Danish Muslim Union strongly distances itself from the attack and any kind of extremism that leads to such acts," the group said in a statement. "

The attacker was known to belong to an al-Qaida group:

"The arrested man has, according to PET's information, close relations to the Somali terrorist group al-Shabab and al-Qaida leaders in eastern Africa," Scharf said."

Now, no one has mentioned the grandaughter which was with the cartoonist during the attack. She should not have to suffer for the choice made by her grandfather.

Now, if you have any objection to this, please YOU enlighten me. I have no problem of taking back my words if they came as offensive to you.

Honestly, I don't see anything offensive in it. It was based on the last year's discussion on Ghaza events.

Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime

Collective outrage by Muslims on fellow Muslims for commiting

by Everybody Loves Somebody ... on

terrorist acts has been nonexistent since 1979.

Since this is the begging of the new year It might be constructive to provide a history refresher-101 here.
The recent history is riddled with crimes perpetrated by Muslims against innocent Muslims, Christians, Jews, Baha'ies, civilians or others.

Case 1) In 1979 in Iran, our fellow Muslims (e.g., Mullahs and the revolutionaries) committed murder and many other atrocities against fellow Muslims (e.g., people who were associated with the previous regime and other political minded folks) but we (Iranian Muslims) turned a blind eye on all those crimes.

Case 2) In 1979, the Iranian Muslim students took American hostages in Iran which both legally and morally was a wrong thing to do but the fellow Muslims did not protest and in fact cheered and appladed this brbaric act.

Case 3) In 1980, The Muslim government executed a group of true patrotic Iranians (Muslims and possibly others) under the pretext of a coup and the fellow Muslims decided to turn a blind eye on that crime.

Case 4) In the 1980's, the Iranian Muslims and their surrogates in Europe committed repeated murders against innocent Muslims (e.g., General Oveisi, Bakhtiyar, and others) but the rest of the Muslim commnities decided to stay silent.

Case 5) During the early to late 1980's, the surrogates of the Islamic Regime in Lebanon took American hostages (remember Terry Anderson et al) and committed murder and hijacked many planes (remember the TWA flight) but the rest of the Muslim world very conveniently decided to stay quiet and not protest.

Case 6) Moving into the 90's, the Muslims tried to bring down the WTC buildings and where were the fellow Muslims to protest this?

Case 7) During this decade, the Hezbollah and Hamas surrogates of the Iranian "Muslim" regime committed Murders against the innocent Israeli civilians and once again the fellow Muslims not only did not universally protest but also cheered these awful crimes.

Case 8) The 911 event was the mother of all silences and turning-of-a-blind-eyes by the Muslims across the world on the fellow Muslims who committed the crime!

Case 9) The 2004-2005 blowing up of the passenger train and murdering of the innocent passengers in Spain by Muslims that outraged everyone except the fellow Muslims.

Case 10) ....

Case N, hypothetical!) In 2025, the Muslim terrorists blew up a shopping Mall in the Washington DC suburb and caused 100's of innocent lives. And yet the silent Muslims around the world justified and blamed Sag, Gorbeh, and Shoghal for this crime and decided not to protest!?

Case N +1) Please conjure up your own event!

Remember that after 911, the radio show hosts across America came up with the following expression which is so true, "Not All Muslims Are Terrorist, But All Terrorists Are Muslims!?

The moral of the story above is that collective silence of a group may bring collective punishment upon that group, deserving or not!

David ET

Let's stop apologizing for Islamic Extremisim

by David ET on

Much wrong was done in the name of Christianity, Judiasm, etc etc...

But practically every act of suicide bombing and attempting to kill people for expressing their views these days is being done in name of Islam and we have not seen one international gathering of all Muslim religious leaders of ALL sects to issue a worldwide fatwa to once and for all put an end to this by calling it murder of innocent people.

Look at how many Muslims get killed in Pakistan and Iraq and Afghanistan with suicide bombings practically every day. Just 100 Muslims yesterday in Pakistan in  volleyball match  and we now just read the headline and dont even nod our heads anymore. We have become used to seeing Islamists killing innocent people of all backgrounds including Muslims.

Let's face it, there is a condoning and a whitewash by many Muslims going on by not being outspoken and not standing up to extremists.

If some Muslims claim that theirs is religion of peace, it is therefore their duty and no others to stand up for their belief and if not, noone one can do that for them.

Islam today is what is being presented by suicide bombers and Islamic Republics, Hamas etc these days and we can not blame the rest of the world for it but Muslims themselves for justifying it all or being quiet.

If this is not Islam then  show it in action and not words , until then if it walks like a duck, talks like duck , it is a duck ..

there is always something holy to someone somewhere...who decides what can be said , about what and whom and where?

These imaginary lines are in  our heads. Throughout history it took courageous people like this cartoonist and Rushdie to break the taboos...

You now can see all kinds of cartoons and films about Jesus and often nothing happens and at some point in history they would have been killed for that.

"So long as the people do not care to exercise their freedom, those who wish to tyrannize will do so; for tyrants are active and ardent, and will devote themselves in the name of any number of gods, religious and otherwise, to put shackles upon sleeping men."                     Voltaire

Islam IS fanaticism!

by Faramarz_Fateh on

You can't put lipstick on a pig and call it Sophia Loren.

As David ET has outlined below in one of the earlier responses, there are numerous teachings for killing in the Quran.

In the age of technology, true Islam is being exposed.  Its always been the same.

Same with the Jews that think of themselves as the chosen one's of God.

Same with Christians like George W. Bush who kill thousands for the sake of Christianity.

Organized religion is the source of most evil.

I say "taboo" - you say "you cannot touch this"

by MM on

Well Sonny - When it comes to the 12 followers, the 5 bodies, the martyrs, the book, the messenger and the one, well, M.C. Hammer said it best recently "you cannot touch this".

Why oh why, O'Master?  Because we will kill you.  BTW, if you switch sides, we will kill you first, and then you will burn in hell.  Oh, while we are at it, let's throw in the Islamic Republic, the Velayat-e Vaghih and anything else we deem as Un-Islamic and against God as taboos.

How do we know, O'Master?  Because we are told so.  Shut the hell up or I will kill you too.

Oh, I see, O’Master.  You mean like the 72 virgins that we are promised if we kill a whole bunch of people, once sanctioned by a faux-atwa?  You got it, Sonny.

On a serious note, the cartoonists were brave to open a whole can of worms called the Islamic Taboos.  The more we talk about these taboos, the less they will stink.

Paymaneh Amiri

State violence against free speech in the name of Islam

by Paymaneh Amiri on

Iranian prisons are full of journalists who expressed an opinion.  They used words and they were punished with arrests, torture, exile, long-term prison sentences, and in some cases, murder.  Their "crimes" were speaking against government policies.  The same thinking that puts those people behind bars inside Iran, would issue fatwas and pay prizes to those who would take out opponents outside Iran.

There is no defense for state-sponsored violence against free speech.  NOTHING an individual says or writes should be grounds for his or her imprisonment, let alone murder.

Omid Reza Mirsayyafi, a young blogger in Tehran, was arrested and put in prison for writing a letter to Ali Khamenei last year.  He was murdered under torture at Evin Prison last March.

Victims of "Serial Murders" of the 1990's included some of Iran's brightest and most prominent scholars who had done nothing but to write their opinions.

Last week, Sadegh Minaee, a Kurdish journalist was tried in Sanandaj on charges of “refusal to stand up during the playing of the national anthem,” “propagation against the regime,” and “insulting authorities."

Ahmad Zeid Abadi, a prominent journalist in Iran, was arrested and imprisoned for six months, most of it in solitary confinement and under torture, and eventually sentenced to six years imprisonment in exile in Gonabad and lifetime deprivation of social and political activities, including writing.  Zeid Abadi's charges were built around a letter he wrote to Ali Khamenei, questioning his policies, in which he did not address him as "Moazzam."

The list is horrible and long and it shows a state which uses violence against its citizens for what they think and say.

Starting with the worldwide publicity and fatwa for Salman Rushdi's book, I believe Islamic Republic of Iran has had a lot to do with restricting free speech in the world on pretense of "defending Islam," and has continued internal policies which have made a mockery of  Islam, portraying it as a religion of no tolerance, no mercy, and above all, no justice.
