Recently under head coach Afshin Ghotbi Iran has played 4 friendly games against European club teams (Lazio of Italy one of them) and has had acceptable records (no defeat).
That's look promising specially Iran's last night match against Armenia in Armenia which ended with Iran's victory 3-1. We should not get too proud of that and keep working hard for the Asian Football Cup coming soon. The results look promising even though Iran's shortcomings in defense and offense should be rectified!
Watch the goals and enjoy them:

European teams is hard to
by Mehman on Fri Aug 13, 2010 12:17 PM PDTEuropean teams is hard to get due to politics and sanctions. We can only get the best that is given to us under the present situation. Some strong African teams are good enough for us. I am sure they can get second class europeans to play with us, second class europeans are strong enough.
Yeahh...
by Doctor X on Fri Aug 13, 2010 10:02 AM PDTThat would be nice but one thing that puzzles me though to this day is the choice of teams we play friendlies against. I still don't know why before the world cup, when there was a friendly-frenzy going and there was virtually another world cup of those games, Iran did not play even one single match. and even now... the choices are not so top-rated. Lazio... Armenia and i am sure a few african teams in the future.
How about matching up against some reputable teams in europe?.

by Mehman on Thu Aug 12, 2010 09:55 PM PDTYes,
and what I like about him is the routine friendly matches he puts for the team Melli, if they let him continue this trend of friendly matches twice a month until the Asian Cup, we will be among the 4 first teams.

by Doctor X on Thu Aug 12, 2010 06:44 PM PDTExactly.
Ghotbi is doing what all other coaches, progressive coaches are doing. Indeed such a framework and such effective communication and formidability can do marvels for our team and the future games outcomes,
even in this last exhibition there were a few instances of this working together and i just don't know the names of the new players but a couple of them showed some chuzpah and took shots and made some good manuvers.
They need practice. practice makes perfect.

by Mehman on Thu Aug 12, 2010 02:02 PM PDTThe anchor players eventually get old and soon the time comes when they must be replaced by younger ones, and Ghotbi is doing a good job to give the new talents an opportunity to show their abilities.
What iranian players need is the mental framework for a quick and efficient tactical turn of the ball, fast and accurate passing of the ball and the movements without ball as it is said.
Can he implant this into their minds? That is the question.

I was just watching the highlights of Germany vs Denmark match. and i was just thinking to myself. this german team had an entirely new face in this game, i mean the only veteran on the team was someone who himself was a newcomer in the world cup and yet the tenactiy that they displayed and the awsome energy was just too amazing when you ponder upon it.
The bad thing with us is that without having our usual players or i guess the anchor players the team seems to get all despirited and loses composure. sometime we focus too much on certain players and forget that there is whole rest of the team out there that need attention as well.
I wish thembest of luck regardless/

by Faramarz on Thu Aug 12, 2010 11:17 AM PDTI meant the great players at their peaks, like 7-8 years ago, not on wheel chairs, like most of them looked recently.
I agree though, one thing that we Iranians have is potential, and plenty of it. What is lacking is the rest of it!
But I am cheering for them anyways.

by Doctor X on Thu Aug 12, 2010 10:57 AM PDTWhat great players? OH you mean the old and rusty (not too trusty) 35 + year old players? This is a young team and has a lotta of potential. they certainly have some good chemistry which with a little attention canbecome something really potent and big, something to be reckoned with.
Teamwork will be the key operating word here.
Not a Good Performance
by Faramarz on Thu Aug 12, 2010 09:58 AM PDTThanks for posting the highlights Mehman.
I watched the highlights of this and the other recent games. Unfortunately, Ghotbi has not been able to put a good team together. And with the upcoming Asian games this winter, he will have a tough time.
With the passing of the great players of the past 10 years, there is definitely a talent problem, on top of all other usual organizational, cultural and political challenges.
But, let's hope for the best!

The above quote describes best the general way Iran plays soccer, the best and dumbest moves together!
It has been always like that since 1998 at least. Our defense is not good. Coordinations between lines should be emphasized. Iran's strong point has usually been in the midfields. With Khalatbari, Nekounam, Andranik, Karimi and... we need a good defense line (our weakest point) and a strong tall striker (like Daei) to finish together with another dribbler forward!
Iran slips down to 65th in FIFA rankings
by MM on Wed Aug 11, 2010 09:03 PM PDTnot good. Iran's football should be better than 65th.

The Defensive Dillema
by Doctor X on Wed Aug 11, 2010 08:20 PM PDTI watched the highlights of both games and i saw Brilliant moves and then there were the dumbest of all moves. I liked ( can't remember his name's) goal against lazio, Reminded me of the first goal scored by Klose against England in the world cup.
Iran needs to work on its running game and coordination among midfielders and strikers. Good passes and on target long shots can get iran very far...
Greater Iran!
by Immortal Guard on Wed Aug 11, 2010 07:06 PM PDTArmenia and Azerbaijan should be reincorporated into Iran!
