From Divan-e Shams (Ghazaliat) by Rumi, Recitation (Deklame') by Ahmad Shamlou

Divan-e Shams-e Tabrizi
by: Molana Jalal-e-Din Mohammad Molavi Rumi
Translated by: Shahriar Shahriari

Rumi 026
I need a lover and a friend
All friendships you transcend
And impotent I remain

You are Noah and the Ark
You are the light and the dark
Behind the veil I remain

You are passion and are rage
You are the bird and the cage
Lost in flight I remain

You are the wine and the cup
You are the ocean and the drop
While afloat I remain

I said, "O Soul of the world
My desperation has taken hold!"
"I am thy essence," without scold,
"Value me much more than gold."

You are the bait and the trap
You are the path and the map
While in search I remain

You are poison and the sweet
You are defeated and defeat
Sword in hand I remain

You are the wood and the saw
You are cooked, and are raw
While in a pot I remain

You are sunshine and the fog
You are water and the jug
While thirsty I remain

Sweet fragrance of Shams is
The joy and pride of Tabriz
Perfume trader I remain.

The picture on top is the cover of the book by Rumi called Divan-e Shams .. It's where the poem in this blog is from :)

The Finglish word is Ketabsara which literally means the House of Books, and it's the website where this book is sold ...

Hi! R2-D2,

Thank you for launching this beautiful blog. I really like the topic 'cause Rumi is my favrorite poet among all the Persian poets I have studied. He was an all-around person. I like his Sufi poems, love poems, and way of life (like Seven advice). Everything is just awesome about Rumi. I was hoping I could post Rumi's Persian poem(s) and English translation side-by-side (like "The Alley" by Moshiri), but the poem I posted this morning has only the English translation without the Farsi poem. It seems to me that the poem refers to Shams. It sounds very Sufi to me.

Your blog's accompanying picture is very attractive. Thank you! What does the Finglish word mean in the picture?

Thank you for all your blogs and video!

More poems and videos are coming!

A Poem by Rumi

O Friend! we are near you in friendship,
Wherever you set foot, we prostrate ourselves like earth.
How is it permissible, in the religion of love,
That we should see your Creation and neglect to see You?

That Friend brought me up with great care and attention;
He sewed me a garment from skin and veins.
The body is like a cloak and my heart in it like a mystic,
The world is like a monastery and He is my Guide.

Seek knowledge which unravels mysteries
Before your life comes to close
Give up that non-existence which looks like existence,
Seek that Existence which looks like non-existence!

There is a world outside Islam and Disbelief,
We are enamoured of the atmosphere therein.
The mystic lays down his head when he reaches there.
There is neither Islam nor Disbelief in this place.

Whenever I prostrate my head He is the one to whom I bow;
In six directions or outside the six, he is the one I worship.
The garden, the rose, the nightingale, music and the beauteous maiden
Are a mere excuse and He alone is the real object.
