Poem: Hast Shab (It's Night) by Nima Yushij, Composer: Arashk Rafiee, Performed by Samaan Ensemble and Vocalist: Amir Rafati

Dear Yolanda :)
by R2-D2 on Fri Feb 12, 2010 01:40 PM PSTYou are absolutely correct: He was the father of Modern Persian Poetry .....
Shamlou, Moshiri, and others looked up to him in many ways as their mentor .. He is not as recognized today as he was before because of a lot of other poets that we all know about :)

by yolanda on Fri Feb 12, 2010 10:48 AM PSTHi R2-D2,
Thank you for introducing the new poet to us. I read his bio last night. He had an unusual and interesting life. Apparently he spoke an Iranian dialect besides Farsi and he was partly Georgian decent. He was a ditcher when he was little and also attended Catholic school. I am not sure if he was a Catholic or a Muslim. The amazing thing is that they label him "Father of modern Persian poetry. Unfortunately not lot of work has been translated to English. Moshiri seems to have higher profile than him outside Iran.I am sure the guy was great. I did read several translated poems on-line last night. He used "personifications" a lot in his poem, even in the "It is Night" poem.
Thank you for sharing!
P.S. I found a website with tons of beautifully translated Divan e Shams. I got excited! They have Farsi and English poems side-by-side!

IT IS NIGHT
It is night
A night of deep darkness.
On a branch of the old fig tree
A frog croaks without cease,
Predicting a storm, a deluge,
and I am drowned in fear.
It is night,
And with night the world seems
like a corpse in the grave;
And in fear I say to myself:
"What if torrential rain falls everywhere?"
"What if the rain does not stop
until the earth sinks into the water
like a small boat?"
In this night of awful darkness
Who can say in what state we will be
when dawn breaks?
Will the morning light make
the frightening face of the storm
disappear?
