McCain: "In The 21st Century Nations Don't Invade Other Nations"

Seriously???!!! How doesn't the news anchor burst out in tears of laughter?!!! McCain's audacity and imperial hubris are at times truly astonishing. Chomsky clearly hit the mark when he stated that amongst much of the American policy elite the 'imperial mentality' is so deeply ingrained that they've become congenitally incapable of understanding the predatory colonialism they advocate, or why people i.e. much of the American public at home, Afghans and Iraqis abroad, object to it. They operate on the assumption that the US owns the world and from that premise go on to wreak havoc, leaving death and devastation in their wake. This is the intrinsic logic of any such world-view and it is one against which we must forever remain vigilant.

Alborzi...

by Kaveh Nouraee on

Let's not make this bigger than it needs to be.

Everyone wants to attack this guy over what he said, but a few years ago when that idiot Al Gore claimed to be one of the inventors of the Internet, what happened? Just people laughing nervously under their breath and letting it go.

Let's just let this go.

2003 is 21st century

by Alborzi (not verified) on

Some one must remind him that Iraq was invaded in 21st century and he is still for it. Its that messiah feeling, back when I was working at Northwestern, my roommate who was very anti abortion, would not do it in case of rape, considered OK that US had killed many children and pregnant women when they dropped the only atomic bomb ever on Hiroshima.

Dear Kaveh

by sadegh on

Again, I really doubt that there will be some kind of 'great transformation' with obama - as you suggest it just ain't gonna happen - especially in the domain of foreign policy which has proven remarkably consistent in past decades (but as I said it is Bush who is the EXCEPTION not the rule; it is his admin which broke ranks with realpolitik) - political correctness however has never stood in the way of the pursuit of American interests (i think that is just a load of nonsense bandied about by fox and the gop), no matter how many need perish to realize them. the us in my view now needs a president who will be conciliatory and mend America’s reputation throughout the world, which is in a perilous state. 'doing what is right' in the geopolitical domain is almost always dangerous (and leads to the dangerous misconception ‘that history or god will be my judge, I am not accountable to the people who voted for me, I transcend democracy’), a tad of cynicism and irony is necessary - none of these politicians can offer salvation and those who believe they can are narcissistic megalomaniacs, pure and simple...as they say, the best and most sincere intentions often pave the way for disaster...not only do they stink of hypocrisy and self-righteousness...one need look no further than McCain’s grotesque comments regarding the russian-georgia conflict to see that... Sadegh, I wish I could agree with you on all of your points, but I honestly can't. Unfortunately, under a possible Obama administration, foreign policy will be one of capitulation. Political correctness has taken precedence over doing what is fundamentally right. That's what scares me about the Democrats. And should Obama win in November, it won't be his administration. He will be nothing more than the puppet, mouthpiece and scapegoat for the Democratic Party machine, who will be the real power. That scares me more than some geezer who can't raise his arms.

Now, please don't take this to suggest that I believe the past 8 years have been a day at Disneyland. On the contrary. This has been a foreign policy clusterf***". I know it looks like I'm oversimplifying, but the whole mentality towards the current administration would have been very different if there had just been a definitive exit strategy concerning Iraq and Afghanistan. Then everybody wouldn't keep going on and on about it.

Instead we have, "OK, Saddam's gone, now what?"

On that point, I don't think there can be any disagreement.

Would McCain be any better? Who knows? The more I analyze it, the more I question it. He doesn't have anything definitive to offer either. Nuclear bombs? An attack on Iran? Ain't gonna happen. Neither side, be it Democrats or GOP have the guts to do it. Nobody will accept accountability. It's nothing but talk from all sides. Sher-o-ver, pure and simple. You understandably talk about big oil's influence. But military action will only serve to destroy that influence permanently. Then we'll see $20/gallon gas, and the international economy will collapse. The oil companies know that.

The only reason it's at $4 right now because of speculators. The same speculators who artificially inflated the real estate market and provided easy credit took their windfalls and ran away. Then they began investing in oil futures, raising gas prices, with the oil companies having record profits. Before they raped and pillaged the real estate and credit industries, they did that with tech stocks and "dot-coms".

A sitting president doesn't have the influence on the economy as you suggest. The free market capitalist system isn't desgned that way. A president certainly may affect public sentiment and consumer confidence, but not actual policy. The system here in the U.S. just isn't designed that way. But of course, any president will be a scapegoat if things are bad. Congress actually has direct control in economic policy, as it is they who pass the various spending bills and tax bills and so on.

No matter what, and no matter how you vote or think, BOTH parties are so screwed up that nothing will really be different.

McCain is Bush on steroids.

McCain is Bush on steroids. Brace yourself for a very bumpy ride in the next 20 years; We will see a World War in our life time. All the signs are there.

I have a feeling McCain will be the next POUTUS.

When I said cow dung I was oversimplifying the choices. I should have said nuclear bombs instead. Maybe then you wouldn't be smelling the fresh scent ;-)

Always remember, cow dung is a very effective fertilizer. When used properly, many things can grow and flourish.

For example:

From the stench of dung comes the inviting, fresh scent of flowers.

From the stench of dung, fruits and vegetables grow to nourish us.

I see your point about one door stinking, but behind the closed dorr may be something far more dangerous and harmful, something that a can of Lysol or deodorant won't fix.

It's much more difficult to go against  a potential adversary when you don't fully know what you may be dealing with.

The game show you're talking about is Let's Make A Deal. Monty Hall was the host. His suits looked like the upholstery from a 1967 Chrysler sedan.

Blecch.

by sadegh on

right IranDokht - I have openly criticized Obama and can't stand the cult of messianism which has been built up around the man...foreign policy is likely to remain fairly consistent (the Iraq War was of course an exception, not in terms of regime change but of pre-emptive war, regime change and exported democratization in tandem with economic exploitation)...there remain a veritable ton of problems, but still...the man, barring unforeseen circumstances will  live through his first term, doesn't make light of bombing and colonizing other nations, knows that we are no longer in the Cold War, is not fixated on Star Wars and spending billions of dollars on an enemy which doesn't even exist, doesn't think the US won Vietnam, gets the chronology of events post-surge correct, knows that Czechoslovakia no longer exists, doesn't openly embrace American Empire, understands much more of the economy than his old codger of a rival, isn't in the pocket of big oil (as so many of McCain's advisors are) etc...

by IRANdokht on

You have two doors to pick from:

door number one is closed.

door number 2 is open and there in plain sight there is a pile of cow dung.

which one should I pick? oh gosh... decisions decisions! people keep yelling: don't pick the closed door : there might be nothing behind it.

but I look at my choices...

:0)

I pick the unknown, because frankly the other one stinks ;-)

Even though I'm not going to vote for Obama, it doesn't mean I think that the wannabe Beach Boy is the answer to everything.

In the press conference yesterday I said McCain was doing alright until the 21st century remark, because many reporters were baiting him to respond to comments Obama made, and he refused because anyone could see it was an opening to turn it into something else. But then he says this without any prompting whatsoever.

However you vote, of course, is your choice, your business and I'll respect it. <COUGH >.

besides, the GOP is not in the habit of hiring miracle workers. For 8 years we have seen GWB stick his foot in his mouth. Someone who could stop these two from misspeaking would have to know how to perform magic!

You mean they don't own it!?

by farokh2000 on

Are you saying U.S. doesnot own the whole World!?

That would be News to the criminals in D.C., of course.

In Sept. 2000, the Project for New American Century was published, with all of the current WH players having input in it.

Basically what it said was since there is no Superpower called USSR, the only one left is U.S. and now is the time to go take over whatever land and resources we need to have to create the new Empire. This would be accomplished at any cost.

They have been following this Blueprint since that paper came out.

My guess is they are too arogant to know what reality is in the 21st Century and for that they will pay heavy price before they wake up.

McCain is one of the followers of that theory. I would not be surprised at all if they "Selected" him just like they did with GW in 2000 to follow the orders, as sad as that day would be.
