Iranian protests: developing news

Iranian protests: developing news

Saturday, December 26th and Sunday, December 27th mark important days in Iran.  Tasooa and Ashura are the ninth and tenth days of the month of Muharram.  Shia muslims commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hossein during these days annually.  This year the two days have special meaning to Iranians who have used every public occasion to gather and to protest.  Sunday, Ashura, coincides with the seventh day of Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri's passing, an occasion which would have drawn crowds regardless.  People will come out to protest.  The government has done its best to discourage and intimidate people to stay home or to stay within government-sanctioned religious groups which will be holding the annual procession of mourning.  Today's Friday Prayers sermons were used to tell people that protests will not be tolerated.  I will be posting any news I can find about Iranian protests and developments here.  Please join me in sharing news and information with others by posting your findings here.  Please remember that people risk their lives to get information out of Iran on Twitter, YouTube, and through blogs.  The least we can do is to take the information and to pass it on.  The way we can help the unarmed, defenseless, and vulnerable people of Iran is to hear their voices and to help them be heard by others.  We are the media.

The hard-liners in Iran

by vildemose on

The hard-liners in Iran have already suffered a devastating defeat. While they can still rely on state mechanisms of repression & brutality to maintain power, they've lost the respect & the regard they could once take for granted as "Leaders of the Revolution." For most of this generation of Iranians, their moral authority is shot, their credibility is gone, & the relationship is now one of relentless intimidation with a populace that loathes them.

Even despots have to feel uneasy when they're despised by their subjects.

The Sullen Majority:

NY TIMES:

Over the last couple of years, the hard-liners have regained the upper hand. But they are playing a dangerous game. Iran is in the throes of a new revolution: a social and cultural revolution every bit as powerful as the one that toppled the shah. While the politicians are fighting, the very ground is shifting under their feet.

NY Times has some hot stuff on demonstrations

by FG on

1) A VIDEO showing 3 Basilj surrendering to demonstrators.

It deserves wide circulation, especially since it looks like we'll have 7 more days of mourninh coming up for Martyr's Day martyrs.   You can BET that it willl encourage others to surrender or not turn up at all.

7 more days!  Khamenei are you ready? 2) A PHOTO OF MOUSAVI'S DEAD NEPHEW (shot through the hot 3) AN ACCOUNT OF BASILJ THUGGERY (50 motorcyclists) at the hospital where the body was taken.  Despite the above photo, despite numerous eyewitnesses including the former presidential candidate and his aides and despite an inability to produce a living nephew, the regime continues to deny killing him and claims he is still alive. 4) VIDEO: Protestors trample a street sign with Khamenei's name on it. 5) A graphic link to a protestor dying in the street. Like Neda's photo and that of the dead Mousavi, it deseves and will get wide circulation among the people.  6) A Twitter feed apparently run by supporters of opposition leader Mir Hussein Moussavi posted a message asking people to gather in front of a hospital in Tehran “where Mousavi’s martyred nephew is resting in peace.” ANOTHER NOTABLE MURDER Twitter is now saying there are unconfirmed reports brother of Dr Noorizadeh (I am assuming exiled scholar and historian) beaten to death by security forces in Isfahan What a moral regime!  What a moral Supreme Leader!  No wonder he is so loved! (just joking)

One of the dead is reported to have been a young girl shot in the back by the Baseej. Pro-regime lackey Ghanbar Naderi - he was fiercely pro-Khatami before - appeared on Aljazeera English this morning, his voice shaking he condemned today's protesters saying they do not have a legal permit and are undermining the judiciary and should not use Ashura for their political purposes :))))))

Shifteh Ansari

Iran Protests Turn Violent, Police Fire At Anti-Government Demonstrators, Kill At Least Four

Mousavi's Nephew Killed!

Amateur video footage purportedly from the center of Tehran showed an enraged crowd carrying away one of the casualties, chanting, "I'll kill, I'll kill the one who killed my brother." In several locations in the center of the capital, demonstrators fought back furiously against security forces, hurling stones and setting their motorcycles, cars and vans ablaze, according to video footage and pro-reform Web sites.

Demonstrations also took place in at least three other cities.

A close aide to Mousavi, a presidential contender in a disputed June election, said the 35-year-old nephew, Ali Mousavi, died of injuries in a Tehran hospital. The aide spoke on condition of anonymity because of fears of reprisals from the government.

Mousavi's Web site and another reformist Web site, Parlemannews.ir, also said Ali Mousavi died during clashes in which security forces reportedly fired on demonstrators.

The protesters in Tehran tried to cut off roads with burning barricades that filled the sky with billowing black smoke. One police officer was photographed with blood streaming down his face after he was set upon by the crowd in a blazing street.

The protests began with thousands of opposition supporters chanting "Death to the dictator," a reference to hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, as they took to the streets in defiance of official warnings of a harsh crackdown on any demonstrations coinciding with a religious observance on Sunday. Iranians were marking Ashoura, commemorating the seventh-century death in battle of one of Shiite Islam's most beloved saints.

Security forces tried but failed to disperse protesters on a central Tehran street with tear gas, charges by baton-wielding officers and warning shots fired into the air. They then opened fire directly at protesters, killing at least three people, said witnesses and the pro-reform Web site Rah-e-Sabz. A fourth protester was shot dead on a nearby street, they said.

Reuters: Heavy police presence in Tehran says Iran opposition

by Shifteh Ansari on

TEHRAN (Reuters) - An Iranian opposition website said on Sunday that
hundreds of security forces had deployed in central Tehran, where the
opposition planned to stage fresh anti-government rallies during a
Shi'ite religious festival.

"Hundreds of police, riot police and security forces are at Haft-e
Tir square, Enqelab Street and near the main Bazaar," the Jaras website
reported.

The moderate opposition has urged people to gather in central Tehran on Sunday morning.

Baton-wielding riot police fired tear gas and warning shots on
Saturday to disperse supporters of opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi
in various parts of Tehran.

Shifteh Ansari
