Welcome to the new & improved Iranian.com!

Great to see all of you here on the "new" Iranian.com.  Since 1995 Iranian.com has been a community for the people, by the people. With this latest site upgrade, we hope to continue our longstanding commitment to celebrating all things Iranian.

Typically this featured top slot will dsiplay whatever piece of content is the most popular, but for the next few days as we all get settled in, I will keep this as the top post to welcome new/old members and to receive your feedback and questions.  With your help, we will find/squash technical bugs, improve the site and in the process better serve all of you who have made Iranian.com such a special place for the last 18 or so years.

The adventure and legacy continues. Glad to have you on board...

Well, it's three (3) weeks later and still I have nothing. Moving in the direction of dissappointment.

@SaidAmin - I think choice C works best. Someone needs to decide what's worthy news to appear at the top of the home page.

I know absolutely nothing about algorithms or any of the behind the scenes workings or technical aspects of websites. I'm only a person trying to make use of the great pages and resources made available by those who do know such things so I can't be an effective contributor to the conversation about how to make this site better. For me to make suggestions about how I would prefer it to interface with me as a user would be fairly moot as I don't come to it with any knowledge of what's even possible.

What matters most to me is that I have nothing of what I posted on the original site and all links to the original IDC site which I spent a few years adding and directing people to from other sites such as twitter and my own small blog elsewhere and in emails and chat groups etc. are now dead. I've been assured that "archiving" is being done so I'm still holding out that I may see my original blog and posts back under my username here at some point but checking every several days and finding nothing is making me think that it may be much longer than anyone involved had hoped.

Sorry I can't offer any knowledgable insight.

If possible, can you bring back the older blogs/posts? They've all been deleted.

Hello there. They have not been deleted and should be available in a few days.

Dear Said -- can you also do something about multiple username users "tooping" their own posts? If we're voting on posts, that kind of makes things a bit unfair. I (and most other users I'm sure) know of a certain user who has four different usernames currently active. He comments on his own posts, and although I ma not privy to that information, I'm sure he "toops" them as well. Perhaps you can limit "toops" to one per IP address?! (If you want the username(s) of this person, I'll email it to you.

Good point AO Jaan. I am however not sure if the IP could effectively be used for this as many people use dynamic IP and you just need to switch your router off and on to get a new one. I also have access to my pc at work from home. I think we should set s prize for the genius who can come up with the right solution to this dilema.

w/ 10 or so years of experience with the online dating vertical, i am all too well versed w/ the schemes and countermeasures used to address people trying to "game the system" or in the case of online dating, prey on the naive for money. it's a cat and mouse game with no bullet proof solution, but at least the iranian.com issue being discussed here is about "toops"/status and not broken hearts and empty pockets.

that said, in time i will implement a more robust system to address the issue of the bored and ego driven iranian.com members who artificially boost their stats w/ multiple accounts and have conversations w/ themselves ;)

@SaidAmin that's an interesting point that you mention and in my circle of family and friends I actually have seen online charlatans breaking hearts and "trying" to empty pockets. It' a serious issue in the online dating realm. However, in this particular case I think 3 or 4 people have been specifically accused of multiple user IDs. Is there a way you can tell us if those people are actually at fault?

There aren't that many people registered now, is there a way you can check and see if you can at least confirm or deny some of them?!

While I don't know for sure but I think there could be some people, like husbands and wives, who share the same computer and may Toop each other's contributions. They probably have the same line of thoughts. I don't think this whole issue is such a big deal. So let bunch of nonesense get tooped one too many time and get on top, so what? There are enough good contributions from long time contributors and some new ones that covers them.

Agreed and I like your suggestion. Eventually the system will be robust enough to automatically detect and suspend most folks who try to "game the system". Feel free to email me the users that you feel have multiple profiles and I will double check. said @ iranian dot com.

By the same token, another improvement will be a "one IP address per post" mechanism, whereby multiple usernames won't be able to use multiple usernames to both pump up their posts and also attack other commenters using their "spare" usernames (and to also "bah bah" and "chah chah" their own posts).

Dear Saïd Amin @SaidAmin

Two suggestions:
1. Please create a tab for the date of each post, (...hours ago and ,,,days ago are not enough)
2. please create a tab for the list of Contibutors/Authos with the relative links

thanks for the feedback. i am amped with where we are and where we are headed. we have created better publishing tools, retired an old creaky platform and are now using a new code base that makes it easier to scale/build new features etc. the old platform took hours for JJ to get anything edited/posted on the site -- completely inefficient. this will no longer be an issue. nor will the technological challenges of an old cold base that made it a nightmare to build new tools/features for all of you. we have moved forward boldly, and i appreciate those of who have chosen to constructively partner w/ me to keep the ball moving forward.

the site will be moving towards a home page where there are featured blogs, curated news, and categories for blogs/news - think huff po-ish (cc @alimostofi ). there will also be a "blog central" of sorts (like the old idc), where all original content will be displayed. toops that your content earns from fellow members will help the editor decide what to feature. i also anticipate getting quality blog contributions from well know bloggers, personalities, thought leaders etc. -- ideally the new editor has plenty of good contacts in his/her rolodex and is well respected -- i will also use my powers of persian persuasion to get them on board ;)

wants:

1) i will need to find a kick ass editor, so if any of you have suggestions, please do share.

2) categories: how should we break up the content? specifically, what are the categories that you suggest?

@SoosanKhanoom a YouTube badge will be added.

@faramarz yup, adding content suggestions to viewed content is a good idea. i think that we are 2 or 3 iterations removed from that, but we're on the same page.

@divaneh i'm leaning towards two blogs and two news items per day (cc @AnonymousObserver ). this will indeed place an emphasis on quality over quantity. i hear you about target audience. in order for the site to reach more people (of whatever age), we need better content, engagement tools, the ability to push content to other networks and both farsi and english content. english only content is limited in terms of the sites addressable market. i'm confident about all the aforementioned.

onward & upward!

Thanks for the update. I am sure your power of Persian persuasion will do the trick. In reply to your questions.

1- Hossein Shariatmadari ( Sorry did you say kick ass or kiss ass?)
2- Home Made, News, Misc, Videos

Two blogs and two news posts is a very appropriate limit.

Please also do something about this site not refreshing stuff, live. The old IDC used to have this problem but only when you were not logged in. Now when we're logged in we can't see the latest posts or comments. You mentioned this as being a cache issue or something?

SaidAmin

Saïd Amin Saïd Amin is a tech entrepreneur born in Tehran, Iran. He is the founder/CEO of World Singles Networks, a leading provider of niche online dating services and the Publisher of Iranian.com.

There is a lag of a few short minutes for new content that is posted. Caching occurs so as to improve site performance. In time there will be reduced lag.

1) I suggest JJJ as a kickass editor! He may still be available and can pull double duty! If he is not available, I'd be the 2nd best, though I am anonymous and that can be a problem! My 3rd best would be Maz Jobrani though he may be too expensive, but it's worth a try. Maz may be interested in adding to his resume that he is an i.com editor! My 4th and last best would be just about anyone who can read and speak Farsi, JJ's daughter as an example, or anyone who is not a zealot!

2) as far as content breakup, I don't know why we can't break up the content like it used to be. You can always add but that'd be a starting point. I'd add another "tab" for Revolution Generation or Generation X or another title to capture the thoughts of those who were born after 1979.

3) the Farsi content here is really bad now. It went from bad that used to be in the old idc to very bad in this new platform. I think if you can add a button that gives you text direction from left to right or right to left, it'd solve the problem. iroon dot com seems to have solved this problem and it's working very well. Have Farsi content posted on the Farsi side and English on the English side. Kodoom dot com is actually better in this regard but here we need change really bad.

Hi Said

I find the site is too cluttered. The front page needs to be more of a dashboard. This dashboard then needs to be minimised in the different sections. Clear path of each page needs to appear.

Quite simply one gets lost in the site. It is a mess. Sorry but you need to work on indexing and classification tools.

Writting on the site is not easy with mobiles or tablets. You need an app.
But I love the ability to ban and delete.

Finally all the links of the old site are on Google and the user gets a directed to the first page of the new site without any appropriate comment.

Thanks for the feedback. Per my earlier comment/update, sections will be added (see comments above). As for old IDC links, they will be back soon.

Also here is a simple concept. I just read the update via email. Next I had to go to activity. Next I had to scroll down and find this message.

That is a lot of work. Make it so that I can reply my email or activity or at least make the link in activity bring me directly to your comment.

I am sure you are very busy. Keep up the good work, especially when the days start to get longer.

Thanks Ali. Agreed regarding the efficiency of bringing you directly to the comment. While not a priority, I will add it to the to-do. On a thread this long, with so many comments, I feel your pain.
