Aziz Al-Azmeh is one of those few distinguished scholars of our times that also moves out of the comfort zone of high-academia, when duty calls, and actually gets involved in real politics of the day. That's why Salman Rushdie only has honorable mentions, and praise for Aziz Al-Azmeh in his new memoir. Al-Azmeh was one of the few early supporters of free speech in the Rushdie affair, and subsequently wrote an outstanding essay on the history of Satanic Verses in Islam. That essay has been translated into Persian and published in the journal Cheshm'andaz (Edited by Mr. Paakdaman, Paris). Above is a lecture by Al-Azmeh on "the Arab Destiny." Below is the first part of interview on "Islamism and Modernism." Enjoy and a happy St.Patrick's Day to all.
