Dealing With Westerners: Question #1

I took a girl out on a date to a Persian restaurant, and she didn't know what to pick. She went with kubideh kabob and said it sounded tasty. I raved about how tasty it actually was. The waitress brought it out and my date just stared at it, looking at me in bewilderment. She played with the grilled tomato using her fork but couldn't take her eyes off the kabob.

I asked "What's wrong?"

She said, "It looks like poop".

I thought to myself "Well it's good you didn't order fesenjoon!"

How does one react to such a statement? What's appropriate to say?

amirparvizforsecularmonarchy One of the most humorous things in the world; is the notion that Americans are a greater force for good & more civilized than Nazi's, Mullahs and Communists.

Good conversation is about relating, keeping everything interesting, delightful and adventurous.

Don't use your perception as it is unlikely it will be a positive perception that is the key. Don't make her wrong for saying that either, she's entitled to her opinion.

I'd say
"I know what you mean"
"I can relate to many foods that look like something they are not."
Think of one make a joke about it and move on.
pecans look like....
cucumbers look like....

What a beautiful and tantalizing blog photo!
I can't believe she made a comment like that, not in my wildest dream!
Next time, if you take a girl out for Persian food, please order the lamb shank. OMG! It is juicy, tender, and low-carb. I promise you that nobody is going to make the derogatory comment again and the girl will be impressed by the Persian food!
Good luck!

Food presentation is very important, we iranians are not very good at it. I would thank her for hunesty in expressing her thoughts with you, and explain who this meat is prepaired , and cooked, then she would be able to picture it, and have at it.

You are like a Persian Henry Kissinger.

I'll keep that in mind next time someone is given the kubideh treatment.

That's too national chauvinistic. She's not worth dating because of her rudeness not the shape of the kebab, which is not the most beautiful scenary in the world.

What is this obsession with kabob? Go for French , Suiss and Italien meals
The Anerican meat is full of hormons and anti-bioticss. You'll die soon!

Well, she wanted to try Persian food, she even said she'd love it if it was like Moroccan. That's why I thought she needed to try Persian, to see that there's a difference.

Obviously she's rude. I didn't call her back lol, it wasn't the only spoiled/bratty comment she made that night. But it was entertaining. The shape/color of the kabob is something ALL Iranians know about but keep quiet about. It was funny that she brought it up, and very awkward afterward.

You should have told her, "That's very rude!" If you knew her more *and* were more intuitive, you could begin cut her kabob before she made that terrible comment. It is not about the Iranian food. You should never, especialy when you are invited for the first time to a restaurant, make negative comments. This kabob is not a Chinese snake!

How to react to such a statement? Laugh out loud and say, "You are so very rude and sweet!" :-)

And more importantly, is a girl who doesn't even try to taste kabob kubideh even worth dating?
