The fighting opposition to Assad are far larger in number than 20,000, try 100,000, as it is being reported. So really syria is in no position to close its own borders, it can barely secure its soldiers camps. The west has lost because politically most of the syrian people still rally around him and the west did not put itself in a position to overcome this difficulty as they did in Libya when most libyans rallied around gadhafi, by destroying the libyan forces using nato air strikes.
The Assad forces are at the current rate of loss of life not going to be beaten by their opponents, it will take over a decade, unless the west wipes out the syrian army the same way it did libyas. The worst that will happen for assad is in a year he will be running a bankrupt failed state as a result of warfare and syrians will be suffering the most with no services or security. In the worst case Assad still stays as he has an entire army of mostly sunni's who are made up of Syria's mostly sunni society that back him and their own sons/communities who oppose the sunni salafists that Assad is fighting.
There is no relation between Assads fall and Fall of IRI, even if Assad falls and weakens IRI's power to export terrorism, the West still will love the IRI.

ReportIf only a fraction of Iranian people's money that Terrorist IRI has spent to help war criminal Assad kill 60000 Syrians and keep his regime from bankruptcy, was spent on Iranians and medicine (for example), there would have been not medicine shortages today. IRI's priorities are not Iran's, they spend huge amounts of money on Hezbollah and Hamas terrorists and other non-Iranian causes, and then they send their moth-pieces here (along with NIAC) and complain about lack of funds due to sanctions. Unfortunately Iranian nation (not terrorist IRI), will be paying for IRI's crimes (like this one) for a long time, after Assad and IRI are all gone.
