Wrestling Dropped as an Olympic Sport - Iranians slapped in the face?

Balatarin

Yes, the IOC voted to drop Wrestling as an Olympic Sport! Replace it with Golf and Rugby in 2020!! Don't believe me, read this article:

http://espn.go.com/olympics/story/_/id/8939185/ioc-drops-wrestling-2020-olympics

It was done by secret ballot; but this has to be a slap in the face for Iran and Iranians. Afterall, Iran has won 31  Olympic medals in wrestling, and countries like Cuba and the Russians do historically well.

This is an absolute travesty. An embarrasment. Olympics afterall represent an ancient tradition of sports. When it comes to sports AND the Olympics, it doesn't get much deeper, more historic, more real than wrestling. I mean its called GRECO-ROMAN wrestling...right!?

This was done by popular vote - i.e. every country (every member) gets an equal say; AND, there were I am sure some financial decisions. The IOC reccomendation (that was voted on) was based apparently on TV ratings and general attendance for specific sports. I am sure Golf does very well globally in the far east in terms of viewership and sponsorship - but why drop wrestling?

Okay so its a cheap sport to participate in. Okay so North Korea has been a medal winner in the past (9 medals). Okay, so Golf might bring in good money into the Olympics. Okay so Wrestling has awarded medals to 57 nations, versus Rugby being brought in that is only really a participation sport in something like 20 countries (former British colonies)!!

They say they only have capacity to cover 25 sports. They can't add a sport without dropping another one.

But, I think this reflects on a general theme .... a general sense globally ... Ironically could the U.S. that has won 125 medals in wrestling have led the world away from Wrestling, and the rest of the world followed, or was it the Brits that somehow managed to get Rugby into the Olympics - and get wrestling removed??  Who schemed this? Who was behind this??

Once again I am sure, the Brits are determined to F**k Iran and Iranians.  Uncle Napoleon you were very right. The facts speak for themselves. They are f**king us by stealing Iranian oil in the Caspian. They are F**king us, by driving Iranian tourism and traffic throught their Persian Gulf (former colonies) like Dubai. They are F**king Iranians.... on a global scale!

The demise of wrestling has more to do with the sport itself, than any conspiracy theories, although one should always see BP's hands in Iranian affairs!

Also, please note that wrestling has been dropped starting 2020 Olympics, but they can re-apply to get back in. In the Olympics, they have to drop sports to add new ones. At this point, baseball and softball, karate, squash, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and wushu have applied for the remaining one slot.

Red Wine Jaan,
I am not in favor of dropping wrestling from the Olympics and I don't believe that it will be dropped, but the nature of the sports is such that certain competitions get dropped over time.

Here are three sports that were a part of the first Olympics that are no longer there, and the Greeks are not unhappy either!

- Chariot Race
- Hoplitodromia - a 200-meter sprint in helmet, greaves (calf armor), and shield
- Pankration - a combination of wrestling and boxing and other things.

No conspiracy. it's more likely due to lack of interest, attention and T.V rating.
Ask yourself, when was a last time T.V televised wrestling? and when was a last time you watched it on T.V or went to stadium to watch it live?
I think they did the same thing was it baseball or softball that got sacked?

MRX-Jan: there is not consistency to all this. If it was based on participation or attendance, let me tell you guess what the highest attendance sport in the world is....no guessed wrong....its not soccer or football, its Baseball. If its based on TV ratings, when was the last time you watched a marathon on TV or a disc thrower? If its based on historical significance - then why introduce relatively modern sports like BMX or Golf? There basically is NO established, consistent criteria. What they are basically saying is they want to minimize athlete participation from places like Iran, Cuba, North Korea by switching to an affluent (western sport) like Golf and Rugby. The beauty of some sports like football (soccer) or wrestling is precisely the fact that it does not cost very much to participate, a poor kid in Brazil (in a slum) can play football like Pele and become a world star ....on the other hand golf requires a lot of money and equipment!! In essence, they are cutting off major economic brackets from participating and major geographical locations like Bulgaria, Romania, Iran, etc. who have NOT invested in golf courses and imported expensive golf equipment to their countries.

What I am saying is - if you can not consistently explain it - then there are behind the scenes reasons for it happening. Now, that may sound like a conspiracy, but trust me there are reasons (conspiratorial or not, overt or covert) there are reasons why this happened - and I am sure major players like the Brits are behind it. Ironically, I played Rugby and went to a British high school - so I know a little bit about how they operate and what motivations are behind all this If the Brits did not push rugby, then who did?? And then answer - why did they? Since when does a Chinese peasant in Urumchi care about watching Rugby? Rugby is not by any means a global sport with global ratings. I like watching it, and I also like watching wrestling. But in the end, its the Olympics - not American Idol or X-factor - its about "an ideal" - not TV ratings anyway Its a way of bringing all human beings together to simply participate. The moment you introduce sports with limited global appeal or even deny sports which can have participation at zero cost by all humans everywhere - then you lose everything the olympics is about.Only the Brits would piss on all this ...I know them too well.

I hear you ayatoilet but there are 190+ countries on the face of the earth and not everything revolves or it's about us!
To be honest with you the only thing I like in Olympics are swimming, gymnastics and may be track and field here and there.
I honestly don't mind if they reduce number of sports and make it more challenging. I say if you don't score among the tenth best in the world in any sports, don't even bother showing up there.
Any how I wouldn't worry about this issue we have bigger issues to deal with now and down the road. cheers.

There are bigger issues, but this is a classic example of how elites in the west basically screw nations that are not as politically savvy. More medals for Spain, better application to host the olympics in 2020 for Madrid - and Turkey gets downgraded as an olympic location and less medals....for example.

Here's an interesting analysis from Sports Illustrated:

Consider the three cities bidding for the rights to host the Olympics in 2020: Madrid, Istanbul and Tokyo. Wrestling is one of the most popular Olympic sports in Turkey. One knock against the Turkish bid is that even though the national Olympic committee has vied repeatedly for the Games, and shown the willingness to finance bids, the country's sporting passions are limited to a narrower group of core sports than in the other cities. The loss of wrestling would be a blow to the Turks. Japan is the leading nation in women's wrestling, with strong contenders today, and presumably eight years down the road, in all four classes. The loss of wrestling would be a blow to the Japanese. But of the nations with bid cities in the mix for 2020, Spain is the most politically powerful of the three. Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr., the son of the former IOC president, is now an IOC executive board member. Wrestling is not as popular in Spain as it is in the other two countries. Samaranch is also a vice president of modern pentathlon's international committee and one of 15 IOC executive board members who voted on the sport program. No other EB member has direct ties to wrestling, modern pentathlon, taekwondo or field hockey.
