Balatarin

I liked JJ, Of course no one is perfect but he had a genuine passion for Free Speech, I had never seen that level of tolerance in an Iranian. It was not a dispassionate tolerance of "whatever goes" but an exacting care for hearing all sides. He taught me a lot and I always think maybe just maybe he had some genetic predisposition to fairness inherited from his great grandfather "Davar" who had moved Iran's archaic sharia laws to a sober and secular legal system. I miss JJ and I wish Mr. Amin the best, time will tell how this corner of our cyber space will evolve. Thank you Divaneh for this blog, always a pleasure to see your avatar.

I hope Zendanian is the only person who takes me serious on this site and no one else has thought that I really wished the God's fury on JJ or would like to see him struck by a lightning. I just was poking some fun on other blogs who seem to slag JJ off for no good reason. I was saddened to see some of these came from the well respected members of this community. If it is ok for them to slag off JJ out of some type of childish vendetta then it is right for me to ridicule such absurdity.

I was really glad to see that the days of "If JJ good then Amin bad" has gone and everyone wished both sites success. Contrary to what some believed, the point was not making an angel or a daemon out of either site managers. I understand that the new management has new ideas and need time to try them, evolve them and engage in a continuous improvement process. My criticism of the site is my feedback to this process. I have no strong opinion about the comment control although have not liked the early signs. Unlimited submissions by contributors could fill the site with worthless material and lower its quality.

My biggest disappointment with the new site is the lack of archived material. I hope what we see as archive at the bottom of the page is not the promised archive, as it cannot be searched and therefore is unusable. IC was a huge resource and a large online collection of Iranian literature, photography, analysis, music and art, and it seems that it has all being buried now. When you searched in Google or other search engines for such materials, IC was frequently on or near the top. You can still see the results in the search engines but the links only bring you to the main page of IC and not the targeted content. I hope the contents are properly restored before the search engines delete the indexed pages from their databases.

I join all others who wished both sites success.

i appreciate the constructive and well-thought out comments. i have some follow up thoughts/requests for feedback that i will share tomorrow. the evolution of the site is an iterative process that i am quite excited about and look forward to discussing.

as for the archived content and being able to search for it, please see below for my response to souri's comment.

Thanks for your response. I look forward to the restoration of the searchable contents.

p.s. I met my girlfriend in IP and have plenty of good will for you (at least whilst she is nice to me :) )

searchable content: my pleasure, and me too. down the road i will further explore migrating all that content to the new platform/member profiles.

IP: nice! great to hear and thanks for sharing! makes me happy to see and hear of success stories. i met my wife on iranianpersonals and her sister met her husband on there as well (jeez, look at me putting their business all out there *hehe*). i wish the both of you continued happiness - life is good!

I wish both sides success as well, as I'm a member of both sites. Just for our edification, how would you describe the scene of previous blocked users coming out of the blockage?

Use your own words, forget what I or others may have said.

Thanks AI and Souri for addressing this important issue. AI jaan did you create the linked page or was it created by the site? It is very useful but does not replace the need for the previous contents to be searched onsite and by search engines.

Unfortunately, my Farsi is not very good, so I can't get the whole meaning of this post. I don't have a problem with JJ, or Said Amin for that matter. My problem is with the new format, and it's not because I'm just used to the old format and don't want to let go. It's just that the old IDC was more a news magazine with editorial control (good or bad). The new IDC is a blog site with no editorial control. Blog sites are dime a dozen, whereas successful online magazines (which the old IDC was) are far fewer. That's all.

The main reason for being so popular for so many years was the lack of competition. Nobody else bothered to get into the ever growing market of diaspora here in North America!!
The nostalgia for not reading but actually writing about their favorite topic, Iran .
Let's give a chance to new contender and wish him the best, after all by unblocking all those who got blocked over the JJ's golden years of being the sole competitor, he has opened a new clear page,
THANKS Mr Amin

There was competition, we just felt comfortable here and didn't bother looking elsewhere. Especially in Iran itself the blogsphere exploded at the same time.

Who says the last J stands for Jan. I gave him this title and stands for Jew. JJJ very well knew that and I was probably the only one who criticized him for deleting comments, blocking and supporting Israel many times. I don't need to talk behind him. I did while he was here and now as he still reads this comments, just as I do with you and I did with Saied just a few days ago.

Doctor Mohandes Beware. BS detector onboard!

User by the name "Arash" speaks with such audacity and vigor about what the third J might stand for in one of Jahanshah's title, and this clearly reveals his inherently entrenched beliefs about the jews in particular and other religions-besides his own (whatever freak show that maybe).
May God bless ALL THE JEWS specially those LIVING In ISRAEL . In fact i hope that god in all his wisdom would take most of his blessings away from the NON-JEWS on this site and would send them their way.

Divaneh Jaan,

JJ is a mortal like the rest of us and in my opinion he has done more positive than negative. His two major flaws in running the old Iranian.com was that at times when featuring blogs, he was completely scatterbrained meaning that he completely ignored a great piece of work that took hours to make. And when people brought it to his attention that the blog needed to be featured, he just ignored everyone, like a little dictator.

The second problem is that a site like Iranian.com needs an ombudsman. An editor cannot be an editor, an admin and an ombudsman. In many occasions, people got banned and comments got deleted without any good explanation. That comes across as saying, "take it or leave it, this is how I want to run my site!"

As for Comment Control, it is like a gun. Comment Control in the hand of a wise and intelligent blogger is an asset, but in the hand of your average vindictive nobody, it only brings chaos!

EsfandAashena

Esfand Aashena http://iranian.com/main/member/esfand-aashena.html

Faramarz jaan how so? An "average vindictibe nobody" can only delete comments in his/her own content, not anyone else's.

faramarz

Faramarz

Esfand Jaan,

Here is an example. We had an episode with a total nobody who came on the site and said that "Reza Shah was an idiot."

No matter where we are on the topic of Reza Shah, Mossadegh, etc., I think that it is wrong to allow someone to come on the site and say something like that. It would be the same if someone wrote something like, "Nader Shah was a drunk" or "Naser-e-din Shah was a pedophile" or "Cyrus was a wife-beater!"

We need to respond to the average nobodys like that and if they can just delete our comments, it is no good. I know that your answer is that if you don't like it, write your own blog. But for me, if KKK is demonstrating in front of my house. I want to go out and smack them right there, and not tomorrow in front of the Federal Building!

EsfandAashena

Esfand Aashena http://iranian.com/main/member/esfand-aashena.html

Faramarz jaan are you listening to yourself?! From the inception of i.com the focus was content that induced maximum shock! The motto was and still is NOTHING IS CARED!

There were bookoos of articles about Muhammad and Ali and Hassan and Hussein and the entire Islam being all kinds of nasty things! Right now my simple photo of a small Quran is invoking all kinds of nastyness! Is Reza Shah any different? Reza Shah WAS an idiot! Besides the author of those articles never once engaged in her own articles, she just wrote more and I'm sure she'll write again here.

You can go and smack KKK and will get kudos from your neighbors as well. However, you'll get arrested and have to go to court and all that comes with an assault charge. Here your comment will just get deleted! No court or nothing!

divaneh

divaneh

I agree with Faramarz that comment control can hand a determined person or group a very good propaganda tool, Please note that we do not all have abundance of time to spent in IC and may would like to respond to false or ill-educated comments without it being simply deleted by a biased author.

EsfandAashena

Esfand Aashena http://iranian.com/main/member/esfand-aashena.html

This is so funny Divaneh you keep digging more! So it's bad if "a determined person or group has a good propganda tool" if they disagree with you? You are not a "determined person" and have fear of someone? In that case you should work on yourself not what others may or may not do.

I remember Faramarz jaan would use the example of "whack a mole". He said he'd like to go to people's blogs and whack people like that whack a mole game. Now who has the problem here, Faramarz jaan who wants to whack people or the bloggers who don't want to subject themselves to such treatment?

faramarz

Faramarz

Esfand Jaan,

When I use the "whack-a-mole" metaphor, I say that I am going to use all my intelligence and brain power to whack you.

When you arbitrarily delete a comment, you are saying that, "since I cannot match you in the intelligence and IQ arena, I am going to use my "lifeline" and make you go away."

That's cowardly and petty!

EsfandAashena

Esfand Aashena http://iranian.com/main/member/esfand-aashena.html

LOL! brain power as in Mr. Spock! "arbitrarily delete a comment" Ooh that's a good one! Good night!

divaneh

divaneh

Your mistake is that you think every blogger is fair minded. There are those who have a certain agenda to push and will use the delete button to silence the opposite view. Most of us do not have the time to write a blog in repsonse everytime that someone tries to re-write the history or make a false statement about an individual or a group. I am not fearing anyone but I would prefer to make a comment without the worry that I may be wasting my time.

EsfandAashena

Esfand Aashena http://iranian.com/main/member/esfand-aashena.html

Ok Divaneh I am mistaken and am signing off. You just take the readers to be too (what's the word?) dumb to figure these things for themselves.

As if everyone gets the information about Iran from these imaginery bloggers who have nothing better to do than delete the opposing views. As if they have better propaganda methods than the rest of us have on i.com, super powers if you will!

If we have learned anything from the last few years at i.com is that those who beat their chest harder for freedom and democracy are far less tolerant of opposing views. The leader of the i.com freedom loving people ended up as a jail keeper. It is what it is, I can't explain it any further. good night.
