Propaganda has been going on since the 1970's, from time magazine to abc to arts and culture/hollywood and Amnesty International, it worked well in the past and its impact far less today on Iranians because of the consequences of its past successses, the few lies repeated again and again referred to the late shah as a dictator, despot, tyrant, and savak torturing people.
One can clearly see what was going on in the propaganda, the USA and its people were and are really talking of themselves and projecting it on others who in the late shahs case were either the most democratic acting leaders of their era in the world (despite not being ever elected) ( because his team was acting and focused on evolving people power, by helping create the largest growth in middle class and skilled workers in the world, while focusing on developing the most anti corruption institutions of any country on earth) , or were about improving human rights for Iranians and catching individuals that abused power like savak (making police stations in Iran safer than those in the USA/california).
Donkeys are made to be ridden is well understood in America and the UK, the USA is cultivating donkeys in Iran "those who will increase corruption" in order to ride the people, that is why the west loves the mullahs, they can abuse all Iranians with them in Power, its why the USA wants to keep them in Power to speak with them, to contain them. This was the UK's philosophy in practice in India for 200 years. Divide based on lies, & rule with the most harmful elements in society in power.
To See Hollywood at its filthiest go see the movie Argo and you know what I mean, "the queen bathed in milk while people starved", ahem lie,
"the king had his food flown in from paris on concord", hello a double lie,
"the usa brought a dictator back to power that killed his own people", a double lie, "because mossadegh was nationalizing iranian oil", false reason as nationalization was never challenged because the king supported it first and foremost.
The propaganda is not as effective as it was and despite the scale of the money spent the message is not finding the buyers it once did.
In fact, when one film is made called "from tehran to cairo, with empress farah and it is the most discussed subject in every city in Iran, the spy agencies pick up on this and know which way the the water is flowing and what approach is working and what is not.
It is not that Iran does not have, "stupid Iranians" who believe what they are told on tv and the media" we have plenty still, it is just that these old lies are not working because of peoples experiences.
The days of finding an Iranian traitor and calling him the first democratically elected Iranian Prime Minister after he won popular support based on giving him a populist message that appealed to Iranians Nationalistic senses, yet who in practice did sell Iran out.... to the Brits and Russians and did use absolute power which was not his to abuse according to the law of the land, who regardless of the law by using absolute power was therefore a dictator by the definition of the word, and is believed to be a Nationalist and greatest democrat since sliced bread "Only" by those who call themselves his supporters despite the evidence to the contrary, are long gone, because the technique worked well once, it is unlikely to work again, as is the idea of the people following a religious leader.
