Gandhi once said: “Men say I am a saint losing himself in politics. The fact is that I am a politician trying my hardest to become a saint.”
If we could bring ourselves to accept the fact that no old politician is going to become a saint, we could begin to see there is no slightest chance for McCain to actually succeed in recreating himself so as to be able to do something about the failure of our institutions and practices, living up to the liberal convictions to which we are already committed by the public.
The closest he can come to redeem himself is, for McCain, to keep it up, and to keep it real when it comes to presidential ads campaign:

We thereby are left with one choice: Obama. A politician who is becoming aware of his own half-articulate need to become a new saint, one whom we as yet lack words to describe.
To write this with our head, not our heart, we need to ask: Does he have the fire in the belly? Does he have what it takes?
