The White House said Tuesday it had received no official notification from Iran on a package of new proposals regarding its nuclear program, said to include an offer to hold fresh talks with world powers.
“We have seen the reports, though we have not heard anything conclusively from the Iranians on that,” said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs.
Gibbs noted that political directors from the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council — Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States — plus Germany will meet near Frankfurt Wednesday to mull harsher sanctions on Iran.
“It has always been our hope and goal that the Iranians will live up to their international obligations and give up their nuclear weapons program,” Gibbs said.
