Iran’s nuclear aims expand, Obama should urge sanctions’’
(Editorial, Feb. 11): Why should the United States impose even more
stringent sanctions against Iran? Iran evidently feels a need for a
powerful deterrent because it is virtually surrounded by nuclear weapons
– in Russia, China, India, Pakistan and, most menacingly, in Israel.
It is hard to make a compelling case that
Iran with a nuclear bomb would pose a threat to coal miners in
Pennsylvania, farmers in Iowa, or even to Red Sox fans. In fact, unlike
other countries in the region, Iran has not attacked anyone in 200
years.
The United States is
already fighting two expensive wars in that corner of the world without
initiating sanctions that could trigger a third war there.
