Rights group calls for release of Syrian activist

LONDON (Reuters) – Human Rights Watch urged Syrian authorities Friday to release a writer and political activist who it said faced a military trial for criticising rights violations in Syria’s ally Iran.

The U.S.-based group said Ali Abdallah, who in June completed a 30-month sentence for “weakening national morale,” was re-arrested for comments he made while in prison about Iran’s 2009 elections and its system of clerical rule.
