* Interest in "Maryam" in Toronto
Around a year ago, the Iranian film "Maryam", directed by Ramin
Serry, was produced in the U.S. The movie fascinated the Iranian audience
as well as the general public and received excellent comments by movie critics
like Roger Ebert, who called it "an extraordinary film." (See interview
in iranian.com)
"Maryam" has now been sent to the Toronto International Film
Festival to be reviewed for screening at the forthcoming festival in September.
Since festival organizers take into consideration the degree of the interest
the public shows in the film, a group of Iranian community members in Toronto
has prepared a petition like letter to the Toronto International Film Festival,
to indicate their interest in seeing Maryam and make sure the organizers
screen the film.
Those interested to support the movie by adding their names please email
full name and phone number to abbasatrvash@yahoo.com,
during the week ending June 29, or if you like you may ask for a copy of
the letter to be emailed to you.

* Himalayan expedition
Hello Everyone,
I am organizing a trek-expedition to the Himalaya section in Pakistan
that will take us as far as K2 Base Camp with views of K2 (8616 m), Broad
Peak (8048 m), Gasherbrum 1 to 6 and the entire upper Baltro Massif in the
Himalayas...
This trek will require a good level of physical fitness and preparation
to reach above 17,000' elevation. This trip is organized to depart USA about
July 25-26 and return to the US about August 19-21.
The cost of the trip -- excluding the airfare to Pakistan -- will be
about $1800-$2200 depending on the number of people in the team. There are
only 8 spaces available at this point. If you are interested to join and
have any questions, please drop me a note for more details...

* Documentary: Iranian in U.S.
We are in the middle of producing a one-hour documentary about the Iranian
community in the United States. We're looking for families with interesting
life stories. Ideally, we would like an entire family, (father, mother,
two or three children in different age groups and genders) who have the
following characteristics:
* left Iran after the revolution
* had a hard time getting out
* found adjusting to their new homeland both attractive and challenging
* the parents feel their children are becoming quite American
* are currently living in Los Angeles or New York
* are Bahai, Muslim, Zoroastrian, or Armenian
* are interesting and compelling people
The chosen families would talk with us on camera in their homes for a
couple of hours and we would also shoot them in larger social settings.
This is potentially a documentary for PBS, National Broadcast. It's a
great opportunity for our community to create dialogue amongst ourselves
while becoming visible to a larger American audience.
You can email nodjoumi@hotmail.com
if you know anyone or are interested in participating. Please feel free
to pass this email to other Iranians.
Have a wonderful day!

* Bird's Iran book reading, West coast
U.S. WEST COAST READINGS Christiane Bird will be reading from her new

of Iran (description of book and blurbs from reviewers below. Also see excerpt in
iranian.com), on the following dates: San Francisco/East Bay area Sat.,
July 7, reading at Book Passages, 51 Tamal Vista Blvd., Corte
Madera, 5:30 p.m. Tues, July 10, reading at Black Oak Books, 1491 Shattuck,

Blvd.,Westwood, 7:30 p.m.
Seattle Sun., July 15, reading at University Bookstore, 4326 University
Way NE, 2 p.m.
Brief description of the book:
Neither East Nor West: One Woman's Journey Through the Islamic Republic
of Iran offers a fusion of eloquent travelogue, historical inquiry, unforgettable
portraits of people, and interviews with Iranians from all walks of life.
As a child, Bird spent three years in Tabriz, an ancient city in northwestern
Iran, where her father, a doctor, had volunteered his services. As an adult,
she found it difficult to accept the relentlessly negative news reports
surrounding a country for which she had distant but fond memories. And so,
in the fall of 1998, she returned to Iran to travel--alone and mostly by
bus--everywhere from the modern bustling capital of Tehran to the holy medieval
city of Qom, from the sacred pilgrimage site of Mashhad to the haunting,
isolated Valley of the Assassins. This book is the result of that journey.
Blurbs from the reviewers: "A vigorously varied panorama....The
splendid product of a generous heart and a watchful eye..." New York
Times
"A thoughtful and eloquent excursion....Bird is a marvelously inventive
writer who sweeps us along on her lyrical magic carpet ride." Chicago
Tribune
"Mesmerizing....Bird never fails to captivate readers.'' Rocky
Mountain News
"Bird's openness and intellectual curiosity, her refusal to be buffered
from the country by the use of interpreters and drivers...add a refreshing
dimension to her observations.'' St. Petersburg Times

* Roundtable: Elections & US-Iran ties
The American Iranian Council
(AIC) is pleased to announce its next Congressional Roundtable on "The
Iranian Presidential Elections and Its Implications for US-Iran Relations",
co-sponsored by Representative Bob Ney (R-Ohio).
The speakers will include Senator Chuck Hagel (R-Nebraska) and Representative
Bob Ney (R-Ohio), as well as Iranian policy experts. The next few months
will be crucial for the future of US-Iran relations.
The impact of the next presidential elections in Iran (June 8) on Iran's
policy toward the US is uncertain. Meanwhile, the Bush Administration is
reviewing its Iran policy and, in the next few weeks, Congress must decide
whether to renew the Iran Libya Sanctions Act or let it lapse. Needless
to say, this will be an appropriate time to analyze the future of US-Iran
relations in the wake of the above developments.
This meeting is the third in a series of roundtables on US-Iran relations
designed to promote an exchange of ideas among interested and informed members
of the American, Iranian, and Iranian-American communities.

* "Sneaker" in New York film fest
Human Rights Watch International Film Festival presents THE GIRL IN THE
SNEAKERS (NY Premiere)
Rassul Sadr Ameli, Iran, 999 - 110m drama In Farsi with English subtitles
Suggesting an Iranian spin on Romeo and Juliet, but with the notion of
tragic, unconditional love replaced by world-weariness and cynicism, director
Rassul Sadr Ameli's THE GIRL IN THE SNEAKERS makes for a highly enjoyable
addition to the burgeoning canon of exciting new films from the Middle East.
The film opens with a teenage couple--Aideen and Tadai--strolling through
a Tehran park. Though they have met just that afternoon, the two begin to
daydream about a life together. Their teenage wooing stroll is abruptly
interrupted when a police officer arrests Aideen on suspicion that he has
deflowered Tadai. That Tadai should even be seen in a public place, with
a young man her own age to whom she is not related, outrages her parents.
Aideen and Tadai are forbidden to see each other.
Distraught and dejected, Tadai quickly decides that she cannot live without
seeing Aideen once more. She runs away from home, setting off on a 24-hour
journey through Tehran while she waits to be reunited with her love. //www.hrw.org/iff/ny/girl.html

* Said Ghaffari's JuniorJobs.com
TEEN LAUNCHES WEB COMMERCIALS ON JOB BOARD
Press release
(Alexandria, VA - June 5, 2001) Juniorjobs.com,
a job hunting site for teens, introduces "job clips" an innovative
recruiting technique for teen jobs on the world-wide web. The web commercials
are the creation of the 17 year old Founder of juniorjobs.com
Saied Ghaffari.
According to the Washington Business Journal, "Ghaffari's venture
into Web commercials illustrates how a technology that is increasingly cheap
and user-friendly enables teen-agers and others without much formal training
to play alongside the professionals in the Internet media world."
Ghaffari creates the "job clips" on his Apple titanium laptop
using Apple iMovie2 software. The :30 second commercials feature employers
with job openings for teens talking about why teens should work for them.
The web commercials are " informal and fun" says Ghaffari and
"allow teens to get a real sense of who their potential employers are
and get an idea about the work environment." >>>
