Contact: info@locg.ch * Interest in "Maryam" in Toronto Around a year ago, the Iranian film "Maryam", directed by Ramin Serry, was produced in the U.S. The movie fascinated the Iranian audience as well as the general public and received excellent comments by movie critics like Roger Ebert, who called it "an extraordinary film." (See interview in iranian.com) "Maryam" has now been sent to the Toronto International Film Festival to be reviewed for screening at the forthcoming festival in September. Since festival organizers take into consideration the degree of the interest the public shows in the film, a group of Iranian community members in Toronto has prepared a petition like letter to the Toronto International Film Festival, to indicate their interest in seeing Maryam and make sure the organizers screen the film. Those interested to support the movie by adding their names please email full name and phone number to abbasatrvash@yahoo.com, during the week ending June 29, or if you like you may ask for a copy of the letter to be emailed to you. * Himalayan expedition Hello Everyone, I am organizing a trek-expedition to the Himalaya section in Pakistan that will take us as far as K2 Base Camp with views of K2 (8616 m), Broad Peak (8048 m), Gasherbrum 1 to 6 and the entire upper Baltro Massif in the Himalayas... This trek will require a good level of physical fitness and preparation to reach above 17,000' elevation. This trip is organized to depart USA about July 25-26 and return to the US about August 19-21. The cost of the trip -- excluding the airfare to Pakistan -- will be about $1800-$2200 depending on the number of people in the team. There are only 8 spaces available at this point. Regards, Saeed Toosi * Documentary: Iranian in U.S. We are in the middle of producing a one-hour documentary about the Iranian community in the United States. We're looking for families with interesting life stories. Ideally, we would like an entire family, (father, mother, two or three children in different age groups and genders) who have the following characteristics: * left Iran after the revolution * had a hard time getting out * found adjusting to their new homeland both attractive and challenging * the parents feel their children are becoming quite American * are currently living in Los Angeles or New York * are Bahai, Muslim, Zoroastrian, or Armenian * are interesting and compelling people The chosen families would talk with us on camera in their homes for a couple of hours and we would also shoot them in larger social settings. This is potentially a documentary for PBS, National Broadcast. It's a great opportunity for our community to create dialogue amongst ourselves while becoming visible to a larger American audience. The prestigious Museum, one of the largest in North America is sponsoring a major benefit concert to cover the cost of future exhibitions. The Moshtagh Ensemble, the largest of it's kind with 17 players and 3 singers was founded by Amir Koushkani. A veteran and innovative Tar player, Amir was trained in Iran and has become one of the best-known and most admired artists in the local scene in Vancouver. The group consists of tar, setar, ud and kamanche players plus two percussionist and three singers. The Moshtagh players will be joined by three Sufi dancers lead by Brian Burk for Museum's concert. The dancers will be whirling for 10 minutes to the powerful rhythms of the percussionists Ramin Bahrami and Hamin Honari. To order call 323/650-3157. * Roundtable: Elections & US-Iran ties The American Iranian Council (AIC) is pleased to announce its next Congressional Roundtable on "The Iranian Presidential Elections and Its Implications for US-Iran Relations", co-sponsored by Representative Bob Ney (R-Ohio). The speakers will include Senator Chuck Hagel (R-Nebraska) and Representative Bob Ney (R-Ohio), as well as Iranian policy experts. The next few months will be crucial for the future of US-Iran relations. The impact of the next presidential elections in Iran (June 8) on Iran's policy toward the US is uncertain. Meanwhile, the Bush Administration is reviewing its Iran policy and, in the next few weeks, Congress must decide whether to renew the Iran Libya Sanctions Act or let it lapse. Needless to say, this will be an appropriate time to analyze the future of US-Iran relations in the wake of the above developments. ICAS Webmaster * Conference: Representations in the Shia world, Geneva CALL FOR PAPERS Images, representations and perceptions in the Shia world Geneva, 17-19 October 2002 The University of Geneva, The Graduate Institute of International Studies, and The Institute for Development Studies are organising a conference in Geneva. This conference will take place at the same time as the meeting of the Swiss Society for the Middle East and Islamic Civilisation (SSMOCI) devoted to Current research in Switzerland on North Africa, West Asia and Islam. The theme of the conference is Images, representations and perceptions in the Shia world. The aim is to provide an overview of recent studies on Shia communities around the world, stretching from Lebanon to Pakistan, including all branches of Shia Islam. Papers that address the theme of the conference are solicited (see below for some possible sub-themes of the conference). Abstracts should be submitted by 15 September 2001. Working languages will be English and= French. Decisions for inclusion in the conference will be made by the end of December 2001. Selection criteria by order of importance include: 1) innovative research; 2) coverage of different regions; 3) coverage of different Shia communities; 4) originality of the subject matter (i.e. the impact of internet on networking amongst different Shia groups). Full papers should be submitted by 30 June 2002.
