Abolhassan Astaneh-Asl, a professor of civil and environmental engineering, was chosen to lead a “reconnaissance” study to gather physical evidence from the collapsed overpass of Interstate 580 and then model the explosion and its impact on the freeway overpass. Astaneh-Asl has received similar grants from the foundation in the past to study the damage to the Oakland Bay Bridge caused by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and the collapse of the World Trade Center towers in New York after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 >>>
