On Saturday April 21st, a bunch of us attended the annual Japan Town Cherry Blossom Festival in San Francisco. Although it was rainy, a lot of people had turned out to enjoy the food, music, performances, demonstrations, and culture of Japan. This festival takes place over two consecutive weekends. It originally started back in 1967 and it has been going strong ever since. To get more information please visit the festival's website, nccbf.org. What was so interesting for a group of us "Persians" was that when we were visiting the doll making exhibit we came across a Persian name with a Japanese last name. I don't know what it is, but discovering small things like this brings so much excitement to us... so we had to inquire and it turns out that it is an Iranian lady who has married a Japanese man and now she makes beautiful Japanese dolls along with her daughter! Also we visited a rock exhibit and saw rocks that looked like they had flowers painted on them, but it turns out the flower shapes were fossils. The food was very delicious, lots of meat cooked in different styles with different sauces. The most interesting part for me was the amount of non-Japanese people at this event. I look forward to the day that Persian events will be full of non-Persians who have come to learn about the culture and its hospitable nature.
