* She is all giggles
Excerpt from Sean
Penn's second report on Iraq:
I get the Air France flight from Amman to Paris and am abruptly
reminded of my own notoriety as the pilot invites me to experience
takeoff from the cockpit. If I'm on my way home to take more crap
from the radical right talking heads on TV, I am damn well gonna
strap into a jump seat directly behind a French pilot. And when
I do, there sitting to my right in the jump seat behind the co-pilot
is CNN's Christiane Amanpour. Every French story has to have a
woman. And I've always found this woman impressive. One would think
she'd had enough adventures for any six lifetimes, yet she still
seems innocently excited about this cockpit takeoff. To look at
her face, you think she's just strapped herself into a roller coaster
at Disneyland. She is all giggles. I pretend to share her enthusiasm
by accessing the glee I feel just being out of Iraq. For her it
is just plain fun, for me it is an escape. And a successful one.
My son will not be blaming himself for anything bad that would
happen to his dad.

* All on board
I would truly like to comment on how tomorrow is
the 25th Anniversary of the Shah leaving our great nation Iran,
but nothing comes to my mind. Even though
I prefer to stay neutral in all my arguments, it is sad to think that our
country's great potential and future boarded that plane with him.
I'm sorry to bother
you with this email, but I just had to make a note of it.
Yours Truly,
Iran Watcher

* Run to Ground Zero
I am planning to run from Washington DC, Pentagon to New York,
Ground Zero to spread a message of peace and love. I am beginning to
train mentally and physically for this journey. I know it would
require a lot of hard work and commitment to do such an event.
I am writing to you because I would like to know if you have ever
had any contact with any one through your publication who have
done anything similar to this event. I believe, there are some
individuals that might be able to give me their advice and information
as far as coordinating and getting supports from different organizations.
I greatly appreciate your input.
Best Regards,
Fariba Khonsari

* Bekhodaa it's empty
The conservative Kayhan newspaper and the moderate Shargh,
reported on the Majlis elections' crisis from opposite angles.
It all depends on your outlook on life. Some see an empty

* Playing cards in Bam
What I heard:
There are a group of about about 30 US aid workers
still in Bam. But They
have not done much
because they have been isolated by hostile radicals. "They are
sitting around in their tents, freezing their asses off and playing
cards," I heard.
The Americans have been asked to leave, unofficially by local
hotheads, but are waiting for
orders from Washington.

* See me on Discovery
Salam,
My name is Farzaneh Nabavian (I go by Faye at work) and
couple of months ago Discovery Channel approached me
to be a part of a series they were filming called
Double
Agents. You can find more information about the
show on discovery.com under TV programs/ double
agents.
This is a documentary show about two real
estate agents assisting the same buyer to find a
house. Well, on Friday January 9th, 2004, the episode
in which I am one of the double agents [Time
to buy] will air
at 4 p.m.
(eastern time) on Discovery Channel.
When they were filming, as a part of the interview,
they did ask me my origin and I did tell them I was
from Iran... so I am not sure how the edits and all
work has turned out to be since it will be my first
time seeing the show too, but I thought it would be
good to have the other Iranians know about it too.
I am very excited about being on the show and a lot of
hard work, effort and time went into it on my part as
well. Maybe other Iranians can know about the show
and maybe watch it too.

* Supervision?
Looks like Iranians in the US alone have donated over
a million dollars towards the relief effort in Bam [See Bam
messages].
This is wonderful and comendable. But how can we
make sure the money will put
to its intended use? There are all these agencies and community
groups and individuals asking for donations and we don't know what
they or the Iranian government are doing with the money. I'm very
worried. Choose wisely and carefully.

* Brilliant idea
RedPaper is, well, to be perfectly honest, we're not really certain
what RedPaper is just yet.
My name is Mike Gaynor. A friend of
mine by the name of Scott Waterbury and I have been working
on this site for about a year in an attempt
to build a marketplace for the stuff inside peoples heads.
The
idea started off being significantly less interesting than it
is today. We both work for a construction information business
called ConstructWorks and the concept for the site was born out
of that business.
As the model progressed we decided that it might
be kind of interesting, and possibly even amazing, to create
a place on the Internet where
any type of digital content no mater how abstract could be bought
and sold by anyone interested in transacting it.
We launched RedPaper on the 4th of July of this year and it's been a fast ride ever
since.
We have no idea how this thing is ever
going to make any serious money for us or anybody else. We have
no idea why people participate
other than the fact that it seems to be kind of fun and very
addictive.
We actually even have a few people earning what some might call
a small living off of their RedPaper earnings. I think that is
amazing.
We were fortunate enough to land some backing for this
project from Adobe Software, Granite Ventures and Sextant Capital
Partners
(Private). There's been a lot of hype in the traditional media
about what venture capitalists do and don't do. All I know is
we would not be here if it weren't for these folks. The money is
the
least of what they have contributed.
That's it. That's all I can
tell you about RedPaper because that's all I know.
All the best,
Mike "Scoop" Gaynor

* Best regards
Last week while I was in Las Vegas I had the pleasure of
meeting Admiral Ramzie Attaie, one of the former senior officers
of the Imperial Iranian Navy (I.I.N.).
I spend the whole evening with him, although he was not physically
strong enough because of some back and shoulder surgery he has
had in last year or so. But mentally he was very bright and his
memory was as sharp as a knife.
I told him every person I talk to and knows you pass his regards
for you and you are the very favorite among all of the old
Iranian Navy personnel.
His response was, "this is the investment of my life. I
have no bad memory from any person in the past and of my memories
are good ones."
He told me he is so proud of his naval career
that he would do it all over again if he went back in time.
He was carrying a photo of one of his grandchildren, who
was only a week old. He told me if I knew how wonderful
grandchildren are, I would try to have grandchildren first
and then the children.
We talked about everything from childhood to the navy
-- even current politics.
He asked me to pass his best regards to any naval personnel
or civilian I will communicate in the future, and
I promised to do that.
It was getting late and I escorted him
to the car. I went back
to my hotel
room
with plenty of good memories.

* Upsidophobia
I work in front of the computer almost all waking hours of every
day. (Whenever Yekameh calls, she says, "Are you still inside
the aquarium?"). And I'm sure many of you have noticed that
life on the internet has its own unique peculiarities. For instance
one of the things I fear most in this virtual
bubble is a particular editing function in Photoshop. When I'm
working on an image and trying to adjust its balance, I sometimes
rotate it in the wrong direction and the image appears upside down.
Suddently,
terrified, my heart drops and I cannot bear looking at it. I
immediately reverse the image, at which point I have a deep sense
of relief.
It's so weird. I'll tell you more later.

* Who comes up with these ideas?
I get so much junk email/spam you cannot believe. Thousands each
day. And I'd say a cool 75% have something to do with sex. It's
very rare that I open any of them (breasts are not good
for my health). But sometimes I stumble upon one as I try to delete
it. A few minutes ago I was doing just that. I saw this email
with the subject, "cheat tonight". I had never seen Eudora
mark incoming email with three red peppers. Hmm! I clicked
and had a good laugh (I've copied the
image and text below). Who comes up with these ideas?
