* Lily Afshar: Benefit
concert, London
Renowned Persian classical guitarist, Lily Afshar, will be making
a surprise trip to London to perform at Notting Hill's 20th
Century Theatre. Proceeds from the recitals on the 5th, 6th and
7th March will go to the international medical relief charity,
Merlin. This UK-based agency is currently working in Iran, providing
healthcare and support to the people of the earthquake stricken
city of Bam.
Born in Tehran, Lily trained at the Boston Conservatory and the
New England Conservatory of Music. At Florida State University,
she became the first woman in the world to gain a Doctorate in
guitar performance. She currently serves as head of the University
of Memphis guitar program in the US.
Lily will be playing a collection of five popular Persian ballads,
along with music by Bach, Brouwer, Tarrega, Misionera, Albeniz
and Granados. Known around the world for her powerful and adventurous
performances, The Washington Post has labelled her onstage execution
as "impeccable".
The recital in London will contribute to the international effort
to raise funds to support the residents of Bam, and those in
the surrounding region of Kerman who are still suffering the effects
of the devastating earthquake, which hit the people of Bam at
5.27am
local time on Boxing Day 2003.
Performances will take place at The 20th Century Theatre, 291
Westbourne Grove, Notting Hill, on Friday 5th, Saturday 6th, and
Sunday 7th
March, 7-9pm.

* Behpour's Bam photo exhibit, Seattle
February 20,
University Of Washington,
Seattle, WA, USA: Bam, the Aftermath. Photographic series shot in
Bam after the earthquake. 7:00-9:00 PM, 110 Kane Hall.
Speaker: Keyvan Behpour.
Keyvan Behpour (Kvon) is a
Professional Advertising Photographer, based in
Bridgeport, CT. A native of Iran, Kvon moved to the
United States in 1977. Although he was trained as
an electrical engineer, Kvon was compelled to
express how people related to the world around them
through photography. It was this same passion that
drove him to rush to Bam and capture the images that
would tell their story.
Kvon had photographed Bam as well as Esfahan and
Abianeh in 1995. When the news of the Bam earthquake
broke, he knew he had to do something to help. He
caught the first available flight to Iran days after
the quake and started shooting ......the images of
Bam tell a story of devastation and courage,
determination and love, both personal and as a
community.
"
am, the Aftermath" is currently slated to be shown
