Filling the shells
Names of Persian months and their forgotten meanings

By Massoume Price
April 15, 1999
The Iranian

The names of the 12 Persian months are taken from the ancient Zoroastrian texts and the origins are deeply rooted in their belief system... Khashtra Vairya (Shahrevar), is the lord of the sky, all stones, metals, and warriors as wel as the protector of the poor and the weak. It means the desirable dominion (keshvar e arezoo shodeh). Shahr means country or land and Var means desirable. Asha Vahishta (Ordibehesht) lord of fire and noontime heat means ultimate righteousness (behtarin rasty). Asha has many meanings - righteousness, law, purity, sacred (Asha Zardosht) are only some of the commonly used ones. Vohu Manah (Bahman) the protector of animals, means good purpose (nik nahad). He is a powerful symbol of creative goodness and the divinity personifying the principle of Asha (cosmic order). Haurvatat (Khordad) protects all waters and means health or wholeness (rasaei and kamali) ... GO TO FEATURE

* No better than others

Alireza Shemirani writes: Unfortunately, we're no better than anyone else ["Aaberoo reezi"]. Shock to the system! Unfortunate as it may be, there are good and bad people in every country, with every religion, with every skin color, and in all ages. So, why should it surprise anyone to find out that we, Iranians, actually do scam the system? Wake up people. What's the old saying.... "as maast keh bar maast"?

* Monumental kharaab kaari

Nader Naghshineh writes: ... we should not be embarrassed ["Aaberoo reezi"]. I can cite an examples of Iranians abiding by the system as well. Too well that is. One must not blame these people for cheating the system. They often consider the U.S. as a land of milk and honey and assume that everything is up for grabs. It is no aaberoo reezi, it is kharaab kaari on a monumental scale ... FULL TEXT

Behind the Tall Walls
From Palace to Prison
An autobiography by Azar Aryanpour

Not long after Azar Aryanpour returned home to Iran in September of 1978, following a visit with two of her children in Washington, DC, a state of martial law was declared. Her husband-the former Minister of Health and Welfare under the Shah and an American-trained orthopaedic surgeon who played a role in the real-life events chronicled in Ken Follett's best-selling book On Wings of Eagles-was subsequently and wrongfully imprisoned. Now, nearly two decades later, Azar Aryanpour speaks for the first time in Behind the Tall Walls, an autobiographical retrospective of the tumultuous events that resulted in the overthrow of Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi ...
