The Iranian

Maryam and I were classmates in Iran. She and her parents had lived abroad for years and after the revolution they left for the U.S... Years went by and my great grandmother -- my little green-eyed Bibi-jun -- passed away. I went to Iran to pay my respect. Maryam and I had always thought about our school years in Iran and about going back to visit our past. When I got back from my trip I send her this email to let her know how people in Iran were calibrating the new millennium >>> GO TO FEATURE

Show pride in our heritage!

Iranians for International Cooperation

For more than two decades, due to political circumstances beyond the control of the average Iranian, Iran has been associated in the West with various negative phenomena... As Iranians and friends of the Iranian people, we believe that this must change. If every Iranian professional ensured that the people around them knew of their background and pride in that heritage, Iran would carry a very positive association in people's minds. Thus, we have created the Iran Pride logo >>> FULL TEXT

* Immediate public apology

Mohammad Ala, Ph.D., writes to CBS television's "60 Minutes" producer:

Dear Mr. Hewitt,

I am writing this letter to protest the biased and inaccurate reporting concerning of an individual (an alleged Iranian spy) who was interviewed on a recent "60 Minutes" program without a background check ["Iran Defector Talks To 60 Minutes"]. Professional journalists like you are supposed to maintain integrity in their jobs and be independent and responsible. Accuracy in reporting is a critical element in responsible reporting.

CIA and FBI officials investigated that alleged Iranian spy ["Iranian Defector Called an Impostor "]... As an Iranian, I request an immediate public apology >>> FULL TEXT

* Interesting Iranian names

Mariam Nahavandi writes: I just read your article on Iranian names ["Delband o Delavar"]!! Very interesting. You may like to know that I have two boys names Delavar and Sardar - Delavar is now 8 and Sardar is 7 and when Delavar was born I wanted to give him an Iranian Farsi name and my father chose that name and also for my second son. I have not seen or heard their names anywhere. Everyone always comments on their names.

    Poetry

Translation of today's poem by Zara Houshmand:

Fear this murderous conflagration, this love that sets fires alight.

Fear this arrow of destruction, this blade that will pare you away.

And when he comes to you, a renunciate, repentant and contrite,

Fear that day that he repents, fear the very day.

-- Rumi

Victimization

History shows again and again that victims of racism can become so self-regarding that they feel no responsibilities to anyone outside their own group. As Maya Angelou wrote in her autobiography: "Oh, the holiness of always being the injured party. The historically oppressed can find not only sanctity but safety in the state of victimization." Once you have acquired this status, you can do no wrong, or the wrong that you do can always be excused because you are, after all, one of the oppressed.

-- Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, South African activist.
