The 12-cylinder National Heavy Diesel Engine is equipped with a turbocharger. The 3710kg engine is 1.24 meters long and 1.28 meters high, with a maximum torque of 6 thousand 360 N.m and a modern electronic injection system.

The locally-manufactured diesel engine itself was unveiled in a ceremony some two years ago where President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced the achievement has put Iran among the top 12 countries in the world which possess the technology to produce heavy diesel engines.

President Ahmadinejad also announced in that ceremony that the country was “at the beginning of the road when it comes to designing and manufacturing such engines,” and that Iranian experts should redouble their efforts to produce the spare parts of the engine entirely at home.

Iran will soon start to mass produce the newly-unveiled diesel locomotive engines to renovate its rail fleet.
