The Italian Foreign Minister, Franco Frattini, has said 10,000 people have been killed in Libya and 55,000 have been wounded since the conflict began in February.
He said the figures were given to him during talks in Rome with the leader of the Libyan rebels' governing body, Mustafa Abdel Jalil.
The figures cannot be independently confirmed.
Mr Jalil is visiting several European countries to try to get more support for the rebels' military campaign.
James Robbins reports.

I am sure Libya is in this mess because his midget majesty is not around. As a matter of fact, if he was here since the beginning of time, human beings would not know what war was. Only if his son had inherited his father's magical powers.
