Lichens, weeds threatening Sassanid bas-reliefs

TEHRAN -- Lichens and weeds growing in the narrow gaps and holes of the Sassanid bas-reliefs at the ruins of the ancient city of Bishapur in southwestern Iran are gradually destroying these irreplaceable antiquities.

The lichens and weeds are clearly visible on all six bas-reliefs of the city, which is located 19 kilometers north of Kazerun, the Persian service of the Mehr News Agency reported on Saturday.

One of the bas-reliefs depicts Shapur I, Persian king of the Sassanid dynasty, who consolidated and expanded the empire founded by his father, Ardashir I.

It shows him seated on a throne, witnessing a triumph of his army. In the top row, he is flanked by nobles of the court, and the lower row contains soldiers who present captives and trophies of victory.

The Shiraz Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Department, which is responsible for protecting ancient site historical monuments in Fars Province, has made no efforts to remove the lichens and weeds.

URGENT: NAGHSHE ROSTAM UNDER THREAT

by Simorgh5555 on

The Shiraz Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Department, which is responsible for protecting ancient site historical monuments in Fars Province, has made no efforts to remove the lichens and weeds.

Another candid admission from a Terrorist funded newspaper that the Terror Regime will not provide the funding or show any willingness to maintain Iran's precious heritage. It has money to spend on building mosque after mosque but the coffers are empty to prevent wear and tear of precious bas reliefs.

Another reason why this regime needs to be wiped of the map. Please support military action.

What about Felestin!

by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on

The IRI is too busy worrying about Felestin to give a *** about Iran. Go thank the revolutionaries who brought this on us. At least Shah cared about our heritage and nation.

Whether you are a nationalist, monarchist, secularist, communist or something else, heartbreaking news like this reminds us of the fact that by far most of us have the same foe.

Nation first.

You have to bring these up more and more to our attentions otherwise it will get lost in the news section ..... .

I also have more story to write about things that are happening in iran .....  I will write more separate blogs on those later ...

On your subject, however , may be we can write to UNISCO and bring this to their attentions .. I know they are having their four eyes, at least, on the city of Isfahan  and that has almost been successful ...

thanks again for this blog

Many thanks for reading this link and commenting. You are the first Iranian out of the hundred or so who read this and bothered commenting.

P.S I did not know you were a Zoologist. My respect for you has increased ten-fold!

This is outrages ...but when these places are running by bunch of morons whose  only qualifications is to have beard on their faces and Tasbeeh in their hands rather than an actual Resume to run the historical places , what do you expect?

Long time ago in early 90s when I was in college I wrote a paper for my undergrad Zoology class on the topic of  " sturgeon " living in the caspian sea A prehistoric fish that had survived for million years but is going to vanish because of Iranian's fishing industry lack of care especially that these fishes are being killed for their eggs the (khaviyar ).  Things also got worse by the collaspe of Russia to tiny little caspian sea conutries whose only sourse of income is these eggs ....

Dear Simorg there are many things that needs immediate attention and unfortunately no one in Iran cares .... thanks for letting me know of your case as well.....

this is the latest on my case and things are not improving at all ...

Cheap

by Simorgh5555 on

How expensive is it to erect a pavilion or an artificial structure enclosing the these reliefs so that elements do not harm the stone structure?
