As President Obama is in London to talk hard global politics about Libya and the Arab Spring, there is little doubt that in discussions about Iraq, the fate of 3,400 Iranians based in Camp Ashraf deserves to be high on the agenda. Those Iranians are members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI), Iran’s largest opposition group and the greatest thorn in the side of the current Iranian regime for more than 30 years. The PMOI is famed for revealing the Iranian regime’s clandestine nuclear weapons program and also has played a key role in leading the widespread protests that continue to increase in size and ferocity in Iran’s major cities. The group’s great success and widespread support have meant that it is the Iranian regime’s No. 1 target. Initially, the Iranian regime used nuclear negotiations to demand that the PMOI be blacklisted in the West as a precondition for Tehran’s entering negotiations. U.S., British and European Union governments of the time had decided that appeasement of Tehran was the order of the day. If this meant unjustly blacklisting the regime’s largest opposition group, then so be it. The United Kingdom and EU blacklisting has ended following historic legal battles. No legal justification remains for the ban in the United States, and widespread calls are being made for the PMOI’s blacklisting to be removed sooner rather than later.

MKO
by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Sat May 28, 2011 07:14 PM PDTIs an will always be a terrorist anti Iranian bunch of traitors. Shame on anyone who supports them. The only thing they deserve is a trial and punishment. I am against death penalty but these SOBs push me to the limit.
Any one who is their friend is no friend of mine or Iranian people. Hear this: if you support MKO you are an enemy of Iran. Those *** joined with Saddam to break Iran. They murdered our Kurdish brothers and sisters.
Shame on you who support them and Obama will be an idiot to support them. Only the lowest of the scum will side with them. I tell you: no true Iranian will ever submit to a regime with MKO in it. Only the fools would fall for this trick again.

by Hamid Y. Javanbakht on Sat Jun 04, 2011 12:18 PM PDTFor Iran, more violence will only perpetuate the status quo, not change it. Some answers come as a result of finesse over force. The Green movement is evolving, it probably will not even go by that name anymore, but it had a significant impact on the course of events, it garnered world attention and sympathy primarily because it was about using nonviolent methods, something which the MEK has not practiced in the past, although they now seem to realize it only makes them less popular in Iran, the philosophy of fighting fire with fire will only create more terror for everyone involved. We should look for ways to foster unity rather than petty factionalism. I think there is a middle ground which reasonable people on all sides could discover exists, yet have been too proud to admit, some basic principles are universal and shouldn't be compromised, however this has to be learned not imposed. The Shah made that mistake with the White Revolution. I'd rather be on the right side of history than risk losing it all for a short-term strategy. Political and religious solutions are only temporary, in the long-run Iranians have to address social issues such as economic disparity and cultural prejudice, without denying the inherent diversity which makes our country beautiful, the key is to find more advanced methods of facilitating collective decision making, and avoid being misled by charismatic leaders. Mark Twain once said, "History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme."
Iranian Popular Attitudes Towards the MEK
Showing a unanimity rare among Iranians, anecdotal information gleaned from both ordinary Iranians living inside Iran and abroad and from Iran analysts strongly indicates that the 'Mujahideen-e-Khalq' (MEK) opposition group has no significant popular support inside Iran....Many Iranian respondents believe that any indication of USG support for the MEK would seriously harm USG popularity among ordinary Iranians, even those Iranians who oppose the current Iranian government, it would fuel anti-American sentiment, and would likely empower Iranian hardliners.

Why We Should Still Talk With Iran:
...
As for the Iranian people, victims of the brutal regime, we have to think long-term, our anger has to be sublimated into something more positive. We have been brutalized to think of the world in black and white. Seeing the shades of gray can be our strongest weapon against those who would jail, beat and torture us.

by Simorgh5555 on Sat May 28, 2011 07:56 AM PDTI didn't know the Green movement existed anymore in Iran. Its key architects are under house arrest and Mousavi himself was Prime Minister at the height of terror. He has said publicly and privately to those who know him that he does not intend to change the regime because he fully supports the Velayate Faghih.
All peaceful movements died because it was mercilessly crushed by a regime which held no hostages to fortune.
It is the Green Movement in Iran and those Iranians who believe that peaceful negotiation with a Terrorist government which executes 8 perople per hour is possible that is plungin the country into darkness.
This decaying and rotten regime is being kept alive by people like NIAC who are advocating normalisation and negotiation.
Iranian people are opposed to the regime but the Green movement is a failure. You simply can't trust a Bache Akhund.
The MEK are a menace. I agree. Peace has not got Iran anywhere in the past 30 years and it only the use of force which can change the status quo.

by پندارنیک on Sat May 28, 2011 05:49 AM PDTThe sophisticated-looking businessmen have always been part of the MKO, since they fled from Iran. Their source of income has always trickled down to their camp; everyone knows that, Simorgh..........and as far as the girl with the gun is concerned I can only repeat what I said before.....
The photo of the girl with the gun, no matter when it's actually taken is so late 60's, early 70's in substance.......
You can only disturb a regime by terrorist activities, you can not bring it down.........for that, you need people............and when you have people you don't have to resort to or, have violent ideology. MKO has a violent history, and corrupt ideology embedded in betrayal and crime. They can fool no me!
Fragmenting the Green Movement
by Hamid Y. Javanbakht on Sat May 28, 2011 05:51 AM PDTContrary to this article's claim, the MEK did not play a key role in leading the green movement protests, in fact the leaders of that movement have clearly stated that their movement is incompatible with the MEK. There are many saavy and convincing MEK supporters in exile who'll lead you to believe they're the only viable option, but in fact they have only made the situation for the democracy movement much worse, not only does this new generation of human rights activists have to stand up to current dictators, they also have to deal with a dubious resistance movement from over 30 years ago who are piggybacking on their efforts and claiming it as their own victory. The only way for Iran to be truly free is to unite the country, and the MEK only serves to divide and destroy any hope left for the true opposition movement which was born in 2009 and is based in Tehran, Iran not 1965 and based in Paris, France...you can't fight darkness by producing more of it, only the sunlight can overcome it...you can drop the the sheer, and keep the khorsheed.

Let's skip my life story, and start from the bottom: "violence against IR, is the only solution".....Not necessarily, I'd say.......Mass movement is.....
MKO can not translate its violent tactics and strategy into mass movement.
And please don't mistake the theatrical appearance of a comfy rent a crowd whose ethnicity was questionable in a beautiful European city for the actual mission from Kurdestan to Baloochestan (spellings vary).
And then, there is no Marxism in MKO, as if it would have made any difference in our discussion,......that's why Paykar was born.......
We have to remember one thing: John Bolton can always say "oops, it was a mistake" and walk away.....as done in other parts of the world in other historical junctures, but we ( or at least you, as a true Iranian ) can't.

And the hardcore MEK:

The people in the first picture seem to be far removed as possible from the woman in the second photo carrying a Kalashnikov.
How on earth has Rajavi's MEK been able to recruit Farvahar Shir o Khorshid loving Iranians amongst its ranks and the other opposition movements are not able to have the same kind of influence.
Long gone are the days of the Mujahedeen Hijab wearing, untidy supporter inside a Cuban style uniform. It has now sophisticated looking businessmen in its ranks.
Why? Something is wrong.
What is it the MEK is promising which the other Iranian groups cannot?
Its action and violence against the regime. My synopsis could be wrong but you tell me.

by Simorgh5555 on Sat May 28, 2011 04:46 AM PDTFirstly, thanks for your contribution. Its so refreshing for you to take an interest in Iran having dedicated a lifetime of thought to the Palestinian cause. Also given your recent denouncement of nationalism your interesrt in Iran comes as a huge surprise.
The MEK are and have been a blend of Marxist Islamists. I do not endorse them but their approach to the IR is a correct one. Its membership goes into several thousans and it is time to ask why?
Look at the demonstraion rallies organisd by Rajavi's supporters and they are young men and women most of them wearing farvahar medalions carrying the old Iranian standard. Why? I hardly saw any of them wearing a hijab.
Are these young men and women all terrorists? The MEK has successfully reinvented itself from a militant islamic Terrorist organisation to an Iranian national movement even acceptign the Lion and the Sun emblem as its national flag.
Ask any young member of the crowd and they will tell you that they are fed up with old men who are all talk and no action. The MEK will will because it promises action and nationalism. Rajabvi herself, in her disgusting hijab, is still a dyed in the wool Islamic Marxist but the trick is working!
The only solution is to organise a national liberation army and YES use Israeli counter-terrorism target assassination of members of the IR.
Violence against the IR is the only solution,
Ukhhhhhhhhhhhhh
by پندارنیک on Sat May 28, 2011 04:17 AM PDTFor the Grace of God, any god, don't let your sense of great loss override your logical thinking. MKO is a cult, a religious cult; any attribution of Marxism to it is self-deceiving.
MKO is stuck in the past, and is totally incapable of becoming a national movement. It failed to move the masses in Shah and Khomeini times, and there is no evidence, not an iota of it, that it has any support in Iran now.
Your problem, and that of mine ( our? ) will not be solved through militia war, with a bomb exploded here, and a fire set up there. that will solidify the IRI even more.
The MEK is now the only party fighting the Terror Regime
by Simorgh5555 on Sat May 28, 2011 04:02 AM PDTThis is not a subjective statement. This is a plain fact. Shahzadeh Reza Pahlavi is seemingly unprepared to sober up to the reality of the situation. The rest of the Iranian community in exile is dithering away not willing to accept the necessary evil of armed struggle. As for NIAC. Oh well, we know where they stand.....
The struggle to liberate the Islamic Republic has now turned into an arms race or the Cold War Race to the Moon.
The MEK, Marxist-Terrorists has no contender and will win this race. For all its faults it is now the only opposition movement outside Iran which realises that an armed struggle is a must. Unless, other oppositions movements across the political divide are willing to show the same resolve the MEK willl get ther first and occupy the seat of power. The history of Iran will again take a catastrophic turn.
As much as I condemn the MEK ideology I admire their courage and reletnless perseverence. The newer generation of members are not necessarily as bad as the old guard. Those young men and women who recently died in Camp Ashraf had nothing to do with Rahavi.
I call on the MEK to renounce their Marxist ideology and support a secular democratic Iran. It must break away from the posion of Rajavi.
Iranians of all political divide must unite under the banner of a secular democracy and form an opposition movement supported by a credible army. It will then be for Iranians to decide on the sytem of government.
Shahzadeh must act with haste and rise to the challenge. He must show military leadership befitting a King! He must appeal to the young people who are awayed by the MEK and offer them the same promise of action and not words.
