At least three Iranians have lost their lives and 33 others have sustained injuries after their bus overturned in the country's central province of Qom.

The accident took place at 7:45 a.m. local time (0315 GMT) on Tuesday on the Khalij Fars (Persian Gulf) Expressway connecting the Iranian capital of Tehran to the holy city of Qom, located 156 kilometers (97 miles) southwest of Tehran, IRIB reported. 

Police said the driver of the bus was driving along the road at high speed when he lost control and flipped his vehicle. 

According to the report, the bodies of the victims and those wounded in the road accident have been transferred to local hospitals. 

Iran has the highest death rate resulting from road traffic accidents in the world. 

According to a member of the Parliament (Majlis) Commission on Social Affairs, Alireza Zamani, road accidents leave 20,000 people dead and 200,000 injured every year in Iran. 

The toll is blamed on unsafe vehicles, disregard for traffic rules and sometimes inadequate emergency services.
