Libya’s priceless historical heritage is in danger of being destroyed in the same way Iraq’s cultural riches perished during the United States invasion, warned a Russian expert on West Asia.

Nikolai Sologubovsky, orientalist, writer and film maker, said massive looting and destruction of ancient artefacts was underway in Libya.

“The al-Jamahiriya National Museum in Tripoli has been looted and antiquities are being shipped out by sea to Europe,” the scholar told Russian television.

The National Museum houses some of Libya's most treasured archaeological and historical heritage. The collection includes invaluable samples of Neolithic, pre-historic, Berber, Garamantian, Phoenician, Punic, Greek, Roman and Byzantine culture.

Mr. Sologubovsky, who spent several months in Libya this year as a correspondent for a Moscow tabloid, said cave paintings in Acacus Mountains that go back 14,000 years were being destroyed by looters.

“They press silk cloth soaked in special chemical solution against rock frescoes and the paint sticks to the cloth and comes off the cave wall,” he said.

The scholar accused NATO forces of destroying some of the most spectacular architectural sites included in UNESCO’s World Historical List.

Just like Iraq and Egypt: Libya antiquities looted

by BaronAvak on

Time to check the private art rooms of those billionaire Israeli tycoons. UNESCO will find most of the stolen artifacts are in the hands of billionaire gangsters in Israel, where INTERPOL warrants are null and void. But of course UNESCO doesn't want to be labeled "anti-semitic," the old "get-out-of-jail-free" card. Don't leave home without it!

Iraq: Babylonian Torah Scrolls May Have Been Smuggled to Israel

by Malkah Fleisher

(IsraelNN.com) The Iraqi Interior Ministry is accusing security companies working with the American military of smuggling Babylonian-era Torah manuscripts to Israel, according to the London-based Al-Hayyat newspaper.

The Iraqis say American forces and looters pilfered many archeological items, including Babylonian-era Torah scrolls. Retired General Widah Nas'rat of the Interior Ministry's Criminal Investigations department told Al-Hayyat that the Torah manuscripts may have been smuggled to the Jewish State.

According to UNESCO, between 3,000 to 7,000 stolen artifacts are still believed missing from Iraqi museums and cultural centers, including about 40 to 50 that are considered to be of great historic importance. The items were looted during the overthrow of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, starting in May 2003.

What a load of nonsense

by Simorgh5555 on

What a load of nonsense  from cyber Basijis who make endless excuses for a Terrorirst regime which they tacitly support but do not have the audiacity to admit to even on the cover of anonymity.

One might ask where the priceless artefacts from the Niavaran palace compound, Saadabad Palace and the Tehran Bastan History museum went to at the time of the revolution in 1979? A whole treasure trove of artefacts dating back from the Achaemenid era has been stollen in broad daylight by the Islamic Terrorist Regime which would put any higway man in history to shame.

Even now priceless and historically significant items are not recorded and end up disappearing in archeological digs in around the Fars region including Marvdasht. All stollen by petty burreaucrats or the IR terrorists themsleves at the top level.

Not only that but Persepolis and Naqse Rostam have become a rubbish tip because the IR Terrorists refuse to provide funding for their continued preservation and even use one of the base of the columns to place shoes on for Muslims wanting to use a prayer room.

I went to Persepolis several years ago and I witnessed with my own eyes turists who climbed and were swining on the Persian griffin capital and statues of horses. The guard just sat there and did nothing whereas Imam Reza's tomb literally adorned with gold is treated like Fort Knox.

Hell, if Israeli gangsters get their hands on ancient artefacts at least they value a good thing when they see it not like some Bedouin son of a cammel jockey called Khalkhali who sends a bulldozer to destroy Persepolis.

Te preservation of Persepolis is justificstion enough to support military action  and target  assassinate Seyed Ali Geda Khemenei and his lapdog Ahmadinejad.

I have never understood how people can do this to themselves

by Rastin on

I can't fathom how people can't steal antiquities, let alone antiquities belonging to ones own country. I hope the revolution is worth it.
