Iran supplying weapons to Syria crackdown: US officials

The United States believes Iran is supplying munitions to aid Syria's bloody protest crackdown in an initiative spearheaded by Tehran's revolutionary guard supremo, according to senior US officials.

Qasem Soleimani, head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps elite Quds force, was in the Syrian capital this month, one official said on Friday, in what Washington sees as the most concrete sign yet that Iranian aid to Syria includes military hardware.

"We are confident that he was received at the highest levels of the Syrian government, including by President Assad," the official said on condition of anonymity.

"We think this relates to Iranian support for the Syrian government's attempts to suppress its people."

The official said Washington has reason to believe that Iran is supplying security-related equipment "including munitions" to Syrian forces.

"The US government believes Iran has supplied Syria with munitions" for use in the military crackdown, he said.

The United States has long suspected that Iran has been aiding Syria's purge against protesters as Assad tries to cling to power and avoid the fate of other Arab dictators felled by the Arab Spring uprisings.

Another official said Soleimani's visit marks the strongest indication yet of direct cooperation between the allies amid a purge that the UN estimates has left more than 5,000 people dead since March.

Guess who has been in a state of war since the end of WWII? America

Guess who has been in a state of war since its inception? Israel 

 

Regarding Libya, Muammar Khadafi was supporting sepratist movements in khuzestan, therefore he was an enemy of Iran. His regime also kidnapped Mouss Sadr, therefore Iran had no reason to support Libya.

The operation which took down Khaddafi, started with smuggled arms in the borders and MI6 operatives on the ground.

The same thing is being done by Saudi Arabia/Israel/UK/AMerica in Syria. The whole purpose of this, to weaken Iran. I really question what members here actually know about geopolitics and military strategy, i assume you bunch know nothing and are just stuck in a bubble of childsplay. 

 

 there is a big difference between syria and libya. Syria supported Iran during the war with Iraq, even though it was detrimental to them to go against all the other arabic nations and Syria has supported Iran's geopolitical interests more so than some 'hamvatans', who do everything in their power to see Iran disintegrate. 

 

Let's see more sensationalism and rhetoric guys, please don't use your brains or have a logical approach. 

 

What i find amusing from the same bunch who live outside of Iran, is that they think they know whats best FOR iran, yet they are completely out of touch with Iranian society and geopolitics of the region.

 The people of Iran gave an 88% voter turnout for a former PM of Imam Khomeini, a former majlis speaker, a IRGC commander and a BASIJI, who ended up garnering 64% of their votes! 

 What's the voter turnout in America? 50%? That shows how content they are with THEIR political system. 

 What is happening in Syria is clearly the works of US/Israel/Saudi Arabia/Saad Harrir. If you actually cared to look and see who is trying to overthrow Assad (a secular regime by the way), you'd see that its Wahabis and Salafis from Saudi Arabia and al qaeda. 

 But the US doesnt care, they have supported the taliban before in the 80's with billions of dollars and now are in negotiations with them!

Iran has a military pact with Syria and considering what happened in Libya and all the American military bases that surround Iran and the fact that Iran is under imminent threat of attack; Iran will provide security to whomever it seems necessariy for its security interests.
