When water flowed on Mars: Colour-coded shots show valleys carved out by ancient floods

The images from the German Aerospace Agency DLR show digital terrain models generated using image data from the High Resolution Stereo Camera camera system, from which the topography of the surface can be derived. In this image, colours have been allocated to the different elevations in the landscape. The images were captured in 10 orbits of Mars Express, and show an area roughly 235 miles long.
