I am a non-Iranian interested in Iranian culture. What is the percentage of Iranians who are Sunni vs Shia? And secondly, given the minority status of Sunni Muslims in Iran, what is their representation in the government? Thank you.
Hi Michael. Thanks for taking interest in Iranian culture. According to the UN (2011) slightly over 99% of the Iranian population is comprised of Muslims; 90% of this group belong to the Shia branch of Islam, the official state religion and about 9% belong to the Sunni branch.
