The Asian Art Museum in San Francisco will present two cultural programs that offer unique insight into Iranian culture and Iranian American experiences. A captivating vocalist, Sima Bina is one of the leading exponents of the traditional music of Khorasan in Eastern Iran. For two decades she has done extensive research on Persian folk songs, collecting, recording, writing and re-interpreting popular regional music. By traveling to many remote areas, she has been able to gather and revive a collection of almost forgotten songs and melodies. In 1994, she became the first female Iranian vocalist to tour the West since the Revolution. This season she will bring an all-female Iranian ensemble- tar (lute), kamancheh (fiddle), daf (frame drum) and dhol (percussion) - to America for the first time. February 27, 2000 -- D.N. Rahni was the recipient of the first prize, 13th Algorithm (Al-Khawrazmi) Scientific International Award. The Award, bestowed by the Iranian President Mohammad Khatami and Galileo Violini the Regional Director of UNESCO, is named after the 8th century Persian Mathematician, Philosopher and Historian, and is co-sponsored by the UNDP, UNESCO, and the Third World Academy of Sciences among others (www.irost.com select "Award" then, "International").
