Dr. Ardeshir Amir Arjomand, spokesperson for the Green Path of Hope Coordination Council, was a guest of Berkeley Lecture Series and UC Berkeley’s Iranian Student Alliance in America (ISAA) on Friday night, June 24, 2011. Armir Arjomand gave a talk about Human Rights and The Green Movement. Here's my short report about his talk.

Social transformation and

by vildemose on

Social transformation and change in Iran will necessarily run through the Greens. Greens as constituted today are equal parts  an obstacle, and a  loyal 'opposition' at the same time.

Spot on, MG....

Every one is crying out for peace,

None is crying out for justice,

I said , everyone is crying out for peace,

I said, none is crying out for justice,

But there will be no peace, till man gets equal rights AND justice.

Peter Tosh 'Equal Rights" & 'DownPressor Man'

Obvioulsy even the late Peter Tosh had a better idea on the importance of social justice and how it should complement and follow any demand for equal rights.

Other than Green Movement's ZERO attention to the issues of social justice, they still remain very sectarian and Khomeini oriented. See their selection for the '12 hunger strikers.' Not only the decision to cap the number of hunger strikers to 12, hint, hint! But also their adamant refusal to include any non-reformist prisoners in their 'action.'

Social transformation and change in Iran will necessarily run through the Greens. Greens as constituted today are equal parts  an obstacle, and a  loyal 'opposition' at the same time.

No one will give up power because he/she is nice!   Not even Reformists ;). Remember that!

Reformists have a lot of power in Iran.  You want that power transferred to you (people of Iran) and they (Reformists) want to keep it.  Remember that too!

So you have to fight (struggle, work, campaign, debate, write, march) to gain that power, be it through Reformists, MKO, Pahlavis, etc (it doesn't matter) once you abdicate your power, all these groups will eventually act the same way (to their own advantage and not yours).

Pluses and minuses

Thank you for your summary and commentary Nazy. It is encouraging to see that the Islamic Republic is losing favor with those who until a year or two or go were unwilling or unable to question its legitimacy. The emphasis on human rights and the democratic process are also welcome signs.

However, I'm not yet convinced that the Green leadership is willing to work with all opposition forces. The Greens still think that they know best. All they have done so far is gather those who have always been in their camp.

The Islamic Republic has eliminated legitimate political forces since it was born in 1979. For the past 32 years many of these political forces and activists have left the country against their will. They too must have a say in Iran's future.

Also, the general belief is that the Greens, or at least many of its prominent figures, have not yet broken their ties to Khomeini, emotionally or ideologically. They have to make a clean break or else the mean old man will haunt them forever.

"Mellat" is the operative word

by Majid Zahrai on

"Mellat" is inside Iran.

You, Fred, AIPAC, the MKO, and Reza Pahlavi are not inside Iran.

None of you can prescribe what's good for Iranians inside Iran.

Iranians are taking their civil rights movement forward in spite of your efforts to undermine and ridicule their efforts, not because of any help you are providing them.

"It is understanble why the Islamic Republic would oppose and beat the Green Movement, arrest and imprison its supporters and abuse and rape them in prison, ban its students from continuing their education and drive others abroad.

Ironically, beating Greens is now the fashionable pastime of pro-Israel lobby, monarchists, and MKO who all converge on beating Greens and making sure that they are discredited as a movement that is alive and is a lot more entitled to its position that these critics wish to admit."

The fact of the matter is that millions of people braved the streets of Tehran and other cities under the 'GREEN' banner to show their opposition to the Mullah's rule.  They have been beaten, imprisoned, raped and murdered.  To deny your support to these brave bunch, is to turn your back to the brave Iranians.  Those who will risk their lives for a free, independent and [secular] democratic system will have my full support.

Beating Greens remains the fashionable pastime

by Majid Zahrai on

It is understandable why the Islamic Republic would oppose and beat the Green Movement, arrest and imprison its supporters and abuse and rape them in prison, ban its students from continuing their education and drive others abroad.

Ironically, beating Greens is now the fashionable pastime of pro-Israel lobby, monarchists, and MKO who all converge on beating Greens and making sure that they are discredited as a movement that is alive and is a lot more entitled to its position than these critics wish to admit.

The Green Movement is alive inside Iran, it has supporters and believers and it is forging ahead without the help of the likes of those mentioned and in fact in spite of their vicious attacks.

Iranians should be allowed to decide their own future inside Iran and if they wish to support the Green movement, they should be allowed to do so.

Playing with words

This word playing by the Islamist “reformers” is increasingly being challenged.

Arash Sobhani of Kiosk fame attended this lecture and has written a clearheaded piece about what Mr. Amir-Arjomand failed to mention in his presentation.
