I was a Perspolis fan but liked Paas and Oghaab as well.

Mehman's story on Ghelich Khani is one I have heard as well. I never forget his kick from 35 meters away against Australia at Aryamehr stadium. What a shot. I have seen few like it since. Looked for a video but none to be found. Mamad booghi was not far from us but my youngest uncle was louder than him.

Ghelich Khani showed up at last year's SF protest //www.flickr.com/photos/ari/3780524882/ and got a 5 minute ovation. He is all class. Was and still is a Socialist and a very honorable man. I could not hold my tears back when I saw him after all these years. He runs a quality political site called Arash  //www.arashmag.com/index.php out of Paris.

What you did would indeed be considered an act of tremendous generosity, But as it is usually the case, the club or the celebrity that is the target of our good deeds. tends to return the merchandise. Was this the case with them too? What did they do and how did they react?

Incredible, Mehman

by Faramarz on

Believe it or not, right around the same time, there was an article in Keyhan Varzeshi about him with a picture of him in Speedo in Shomal and his daughter (2,3 years old) sitting on his shoulders. This could have been from the same trip.

I could not make sense of the article because there was too much in-between-the-line stuff in there that I did not understand at that age. I didn’t know anything about the political background and just wanted to know why he kept changing teams.

Amazing! Such a small world!

No, it seems that I have to break my silence here.

I should remind the Es Es fans that call Persepolis fans “Longie” that Persepolis fans have a really meaningful title for them as well, which is “ Kise Hamom or Kise Kesh Ha”.

Red Wine jan,

I am here and good to hear from you, but please change your team and color. How lovely is your nick name? It is a reason (almost 50%) that I like you, simply because you used “Red” as part of your nick name.

In another note, it was couple of years ago that Es ES disqualified from Asian Championship matches, because they did not fax the list of their players to AFC on time. At that time, I decided to personally (Generously!!) buy about 10 fax machines and send it to this poor club in case they don’t have a fax machine. As I always tell my Es ES friends, we will help you out when you need us, but for God’s sake now that you have a brand new fax machine try to fax the list on time!!

In Norouz 1352 our family went to Shomal with a famous journalist who was the head of a well knonwn weekly paper, and in the camp where we resided we met Gelish Khani.

Gelish had come with his family for vacation there and he knew the well-known journalist so during lunch and dining times, my parents spent a lot of time with him and his wife and I as a kid was fascinated to see him (it was after the 1970s Iran Austrialia game where Gelish scored 2 goals. So he was at the height of his fame but apparently he had some problems with SAVAK due to his beliefs.)

I still had the picture I took with him till a few years ago and at my father's request he spent a few minutes playing soccer with me and another kid. He let us win by the way!

Now during his talks with my parents and the journalist I noticed some intense moments of private serious talks but I did not know what they were talking about but I remember the man was always sad and was mortified of something.

Years later my dad explained to me that he was recounting the fact that recently he was arrested by the notorious SAVAK and threatened that if he did not sign the repentence letter and record his voice of excuses to the great Shahanshah they would rape his wife in front of his eyes.

Then he immediately signed that famous letter of repentence and that is why immediately after the revolution he repented to the Iranian nation for signing that letter. You can check this with him if you can correspond with him through emails.

He was a great player and I remember him scoring 2 goals against Romania in 1356 when Iran was going to make ready for the World Cup of Argentina 1978 but he refused to participate in the World Cup.

I know he had a come-back. And I know he was harassed by bullies. Now if THAT was a SAVAKI plan from the get go, it needs more facts. But if he cut a deal with the devil to survive, that was routine back then wasn't it?

As I said, he was my idol and he still is, no matter what. We are not talking about Mossadegh being idolized. He was a footballist. So no Comrade, you won't be thrown out! I'm not tearing myself over him!

I think that the game that you are talking about was the return match of the 1974 World Cup qualifiers. Iran lost 3-0 in Sydney in a highly charged atmosphere. The Australian coach played an incredible mind game on the Iranian team by claiming that he had paid some players to under-perform and Keyhan Varzeshi played along.

The return match was back in Tehran at 100,000 Nafari stadium. Ghelich (his nick name was Ghooch because of his physical abilities) was under tremendous pressure from the usual crowd. In the first 30 minutes of the game, in one of the most emotional games that I ever attended (No, I was not at Woodstock!), Iran scored 2 goals, one a penalty. Ghelich's goal from 30 meters out was one of the best ever.

Iran needed a third goal to force a third match in Malaysia. The head of AFC, a Malaysian guy, later on said that he was already  planning to host the 3rd game. But Iran ran out of juice and got eliminated.

Asghar Sharafi and Caro substituted in towards the end, but we just couldn't do it.

Yes it was 6-0 Ali

And it was the result of internal turmoil of the team not the exploit of Persepolis. So don't flatter yourself Ali!

What I vividly remember -and I can't put a time frame on it- is the front cover of Kayhan Varzeshi of Ghelich-Khani with this quote: We were choosing the referees. This was the time of departure of Ghelich from Taj. And since Taj was the basic team which the national team was built upon, if I recall correctly, subsequently Ghelich did not make it to the national team.

He had a come-back later on, but by then he was deep in political harassment and his mind wasn't quite there anymore. Although he scored the single and amazing winning goal in a match of national team. But I don't remember what game it was.

He was my idol. He still is, no matter what.

Not just any bath towels, bath*house* towels = Perspolis!  I was Taji too and went to Amjadieh every week and twice to 100,000 once for National team and once for Taj vs don't remember :-)

I loved Hassan Roshan and Iraj Danaeifard, among others.  Even in National team I always blamed Perspolis players for the defeats! Hassan Roshan and Danaeifard made the most goals!  Gooooooaaaal!

BTW Farzin is great and this is one of her best.  Thanks Bahram jaan.

Bahram, Thanks for all the details. Exactly as it happened. By then, no Iranian referee was trusted to officiate the Derby. Khosravani had created such a poisonous atmosphere that every call was being questioned.

6 taaee haa...

In the age of interenet, an event , only 35 years ago, is beginning to be questioned:

Was it 6-0, or was it 6-1 ?

A few years after that event, I came across a 'Kayhaan Verzeshi" of the week this game took place. The vendor wanted 35 toman for it "Kayhan Varzeshi" was 1.5 toman at the time, and my allowance about 20 tomans per week, I think.

But I had to have it. I bought it, and it is probably in some storage, somewhere in Iran.

Well I am here to tell you, it was Persepolis 6  :  Taj 0

(Makes you wonder about the accuracy of any event taken place, or statements made , that is to benefit, or detriment of any group, that is older than 100 years, doesn't it?)

Really enjoyed reading your memories of that famous game! It is ecxiting to hear a person who actually witnessed that game. I have read that it was a magic game for Perspolis and every good shot went into the net! I also heard that much of the victory was due to 2 persons on that day: Soleimani the midfielder whose best game was played on that day, and Homayoun Behzadi.

thanks for sharing your memories!

I remember well the tall defender of Pas: Hossein Gazerani. but I do not recollect much of Javad Gorab. Jabbari I remember who had really nice long shots, and Mazloumi had very nice head strikes and was the aghayeh goal many times, and above all was Roshan, I remember him scoring many goals for Iran's national youth and then the Team Melli. Roshan was a fantastic player with nice acrobatic shots.

I left Iran before the revolution so the players that you have mentioned don’t ring a bell with me

The very first game that I saw at Amjadieh was a double header and I was around 10 years old. The first game was Kian (Ali Parvin and Ghelich Khani, both around 18 years old) against Niroo Havaii (Mostafa Arab) 0-0. The second game was Shahin (all the legendary Persepolis players) vs. Daraii (Jalal Talebi, Akbar Eftekhari) 2-2.
And I heard my first chant that night…

I was a huge, huge Perspolis fan and still am. I remember I would get into arguments with my friends and classmates. But in my only trip back to Iran I realized the football culcture has regressed in Iran. There were so many fights and violent clashes in the stadiums that made me diappointed. Back in the day we had all kinds of clashes but we knew how to respect each other as well.

Are there any websites in order to track these guys down? Two players that impressed me very much in the rival team were Shahrokh Bayani(whom could not make up his mind between the two teams!!) and Jafar mokhtarifar Both from the new after the revolution period:)

I also remember a 3 -zip victory over esteghlal in summer of 86. I was taking my HS finals /exit exam in those days.

The game was on September 6, 1973 and Persepolis won it 6-0. Behzadi scored 3 goals, Iraj Soleimani scored 2 and Kalani scored 1. There was a free kick that Adelkhani took right away and scored, but the ref, whom I believe was Davood Nasiri brought it back. The battle between Ashtiani and Adelkhani was a lot of fun. Adelkhani had just come from Germany and joined Taj. I saw him once outside of Amjadieh getting out of a 2002 BMW, with his Jason King haircut, Cecil Gee shirt and Paco Rabanne cologne that you could smell from miles away. Hejazi played part of the game and then came out after giving up the goals and Rashidi (Khoozestan) replaced him.

I went to 100,000 Nafari stadium with a couple of my high school classmates. We met at Meydoon 24 Esfand and took the bus from there. Gazorani who played defense for Pas was also on our bus (nice guy).

Taj lost control of the game early on. I remember Caro Haghverdian and Jabbari complaining to each other all the time. I felt so bad for Hejazi. I watched him as a kid ever since he was 17 years old. Iranpak was his buddy and kissed him at half time. A very tough day for Taj fans.

Aside from Hejazi, Javad Ghorab was my favorite Taj player. I had his picture on my bedroom wall. He had a beautiful sister (Shohreh) who played for a woman’s team, very attractive!
Javad Ghorab toor o paareh kardeh!

Hossein Kalani used to take English classes in Iran America society.

My favorite players were Parvin, Hejazi, Roshan, and so many others. Believe me I am not that old but since I used to read "Keyhan Varzeshi" from when I was 7, I remember players like "Kalani", "Behzadi" and some others. I also remember "Ghafoor Jahani" from Malavan. Later on "Behtash Fariba" was one good looking player and had a chic name. Reza Heydari, famous Soccer referee was my PE teacher .  Guys in our neighborhood were mostly Taji But my sister and I were Persepolisee.  I believe Persepolis had more fans than Taj. I am glad that at least some of my favorite IC commentators/writers are Persepolisee. Sanaate Naft also had a good team or may be I am just biased.

I remember Adel Khani very well. I was a kid and went for the first time with my parents to Aryamehr (Azadi) Stadium in 1353 during the Asian games and witnessed him scoring the 1 - 0 victory goal against Iraq in the semi finals ( he scored it from the corner spot!) His 'farars' and dribblings from the left were spectacular and his style of long hair and moustache was interesting.

I can never forget 3 great players from the past: Gelish Khani, Parvin and Roshan, all fantastic players, my age does not remember Kalani or Behzadi but I have heard they were fantastic players too.

That famous game 6-0 is a dream game for Perspolissies and I have heard that many people now are trying to find the filming of that game but it can not be found. Rumors are that the film was destroyed by general khosravani's order. Other rumors say that the match was never fully filmed and part of it was filmed because at the same time that the match was happening a group of movie-makers were filming Behrouz Vossoughi in a well known movie....

I would be glad to hear your memories of that game in more details if you were present there. By the way it is the first time I hear 6 to 1 ! never heard AdelKhani scoring a goal in that game! are you sure?

take care friend,

Red Wine is probably asleep by now (3 AM in Spain!) but I am willing to take all the bullets for all the Taji fans. I was there in the 100,000 stadium when Taj lost 6-1 (Adelkhani scored Taj's only goal) and had to face all my Longi friends in school

Even Iranpak who was a good friend of my idol Hejazi felt bad for him. But Taj came back later and beat Persepolis 2-0 in the next game

The Perspolisi crowd hated Adelkhani, the cool guy from Bundesliga with Jason King hairdo, 2002 beamer and miniskirt girlfriends! Here is another chant

I was a Taaji too. But back then I didn't even imagine a day that I become a Taaji -literally! I guess I just liked better Royal Blue!

I recall my sister had a crush on Hejaazi. But Ghelich-Khaani was my guy. Now you know where I'm coming from. The same place Ghelich went!

Among 'Reds', my only favorite one was Mammad Booghi (But I don't mean the one we have here in IC)
