The 1940 movie "The Grapes of Wrath," based on the classic John Steinbeck novel, features this quote, spoken by the character Tom Joad:
"Wherever you can look - wherever there's a fight, so hungry people can eat, I'll be there. Wherever there's a cop beatin' up a guy, I'll be there. I'll be in the way guys yell when they're mad. I'll be in the way kids laugh when they're hungry and they know supper's ready, and when the people are eatin' the stuff they raise and livin' in the houses they build - I'll be there, too."
Marley is something like that. His music was too broad to define him as a protest singer, but whenever there's a protest, or a demonstration, or a relief concert, his music tends to show up, and his spirit seems to be present. Reportedly, Marley's music was heard when the Berlin Wall fell, and around the time of the Tiananmen Square uprising, and during the recent pro-immigration rallies in the U.S. [Christopher John Farley]

my three favorite quitar players
by anonymous fish on Sat Feb 07, 2009 06:34 PM PSTJeff Beck... Eric Claption...Jimmy Page, oh but I gotta add BB King.
Dead: Hendrix and SRV
Jeff Beck played at Claptons 2007 Crossroads and you have GOT to hear the girl who played bass with him... Tal Wilkenfeld. unbelievable.

I saw Clapton play in his one of his first live performances after Conor died... he played "Tears in Heaven" for the first time publicly. There are no words to describe it.

by capt_ayhab on Sat Feb 07, 2009 09:44 AM PSTWith our age group[no pun intended] it is getting harder and harder to find people who really appreciate music of these legends. Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, BB King and not to mention Bob Marley.
Jat vaghan to concert khali bood, Eric Clapton was awesome to say the least.
Allow me answer you back with this song: Buffalo Soldier

Actually I BROKE MY TEETH while sinking them!.what a treat, hearing the legend playing, wow.be ghole ghadimihaa: Nooshe joonetoon !!.
In my humble opinion, after the maestro " Jimmy Hendrix",I believe Eric Clapton is the second best guitar player who I know. David Gilmore & Mark Knopfler come after these two !!.

by ebi amirhosseini on Fri Feb 06, 2009 03:52 PM PSTWell,I really didn't want to sound like an old F...rt,but I tell my son what message your generation's so called singers have?!99% of them just are singers, can't write a single line of lyrics or a number for that matter!.Actually he is influenced by me & his mom & listens to a lot of good oldies as well as his own music.
As for my dad,I think he suffered more than you dad!.
here is why:
Being Iranian his love was & is defenitely traditional persian music(you know well about it),but he liked Tom Jones & To some extend The Beathles.
Now let's see how he felt when I listened to Persian Pop music,Pink Floyd,Elvis,Bob Marley,Bob Dylan, the Beathles...... & sometimes Beethoven( a melting pot of music).
cheers

by capt_ayhab on Fri Feb 06, 2009 03:50 PM PSTWhen my own son was coming of age, which seems like yesterday, but in fact was 16 yrs ago. I gave him his very own single of [Redemption Song].
He was 12 at the time, and ever since, anytime he wants to take a retreat from his daily [blood] and [mangled bodies] in the hospital, he relaxes with this song, and his worn out copy of [Shahnameh]

by anonymous fish on Fri Feb 06, 2009 03:12 PM PSTwould you believe that i still have an old Dylan poster from high school! and the "butch cassidy and the sundance kid" poster from the movie premier. don't be embarrassed that you share your music with your kids. my son grew up with my music and to this day he enjoys the music.
your dad sounds AWESOME. maybe our dads are related...:-). mine put up with FOUR kids in the same age group. dylan from my bedroom, janis from my sisters, hendrix from my bro's and well, the baby girl didn't really have any mature musical taste... she liked WHAM. LOL
it was your dads patience that made YOU the dad you are. you go, boy!

I believe our generation was lucky to grow up with music legends like Bob Marly,John Lenon,Bob Dylan &.... whose music & lyrics(mostly written by themselves) had a message.A message against War,Poverty,....
May be I'm too old,but I always tell my son about them.
BTW
I had a big poster of his album cover(the famous Joint) hanging on the wall of my bedroom!.I can never be as cool as my dad ! ( A police officer who never showed his unhappiness with the posters of my room, a poster of Che was also among them).
Sepaas for sharing.
All his works are my favorite, but the lyrics of this two are very special to me:
