Ben Affleck Directs 'Argo' in McLean, VA :

Behind the scenes footage of Ben Affleck directing his co-star Taylor Schilling in 'Argo' the upcoming Cold War spy thriller about the Iranian hostage crises.

Plot:

As the Iranian revolution reaches a boiling point, a CIA 'exfiltration' specialist concocts a risky plan to free six Americans who have found shelter at the home of the Canadian ambassador.

About the Film :

Based on a Wired magazine article titled How the CIA Used a Fake Sci-fi Flick to Rescue Americans from Tehran, the project is a political thriller with elements ofwry humour, according to the Hollywood Reporter. It will portray an elaborate attempt by US and Canadian operatives to rescue six American diplomats who were trapped in the occupied US embassy following the fall of the Shah in 1979.

The US citizens were successfully extracted after the CIA concocted a scenario in which they were members of a Hollywood film crew scouting for a movie titled Argo. With help from a disguise expert, the rescue was a success and the diplomats were able to leave the country. Movie designs and drawings developed for a real project by legendary comic artist Jack Kirby, co-creator of Captain America and The X-Men, were used by the CIA to convince Iranians that the film really did exist. Chris Terrio has adapted Joshuah Bearman's 2007 article on the subject.

DK Jaan,

Is the plot based on a real story or is it Hollywood?

The reason I ask is that Argo was the name of a very popular beer in Iran, along with Shams and Majidieh. Argo factory was one of the places that was burnt and detroyed during the revolution. So it is rather risky to use the name Argo as a cover for an operation when there was so much awareness about the name.

What I remember about this escape was that the six Americans were provided with Canadian passports and after some tense moments at Mehrabad they managed to leave. And once all the Canadians left Iran, the story was made public.

ESCAPE FROM CAIRO: Cairo embassy refuge for US group

by Darius Kadivar on

Cairo embassy refuge for US group (bbc)

A group of US citizens has taken refuge at the US embassy in Cairo amid an Egyptian crackdown on foreign-funded pro-democracy groups.

Egypt's ruling military council has accused foreign groups of funding street protests against them.

At least 10 foreigners, including six Americans, are barred from leaving Egypt while they are investigated.

They include the son of US Transport Secretary Ray LaHood, but it is unclear whether he is in the embassy.

The US confirmed that a "handful" of citizens were staying in the embassy while waiting for permission to leave the country.

But state department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said there was no expectation that they were trying to avoid legal processes.

She said it was "a unique situation" but that there were no concerns for the Americans' safety.
