After Perestroyka and the fall of the Soviet Union, the Russians took down the statute of Lenin, renamed Leningrad St. Petersburg and basically removed the symbols of a regime which for 6.5 decades made their lives miserable.
To many Iranians, including me, Khomeini was, is and will be a symbol of misery and one of the worst things that ever happened to Iran and Iranians. The Islamic revolution happened towards the end of the twentieth century at a time which many countries such a China, S. Korea, Brazil, etc or even the tiny nation of Singapore started their transformation into heavy weights of industry and finance. Due to the so called Islamic revolution, Iran traveled back to the 14th century.
Whats happened has happened. We are now at a critical juncture. Its quite possible (although not highly probable now) that Iran's Islamic regime could be toppled in a matter of months. If that happens and Iran becomes a secular democracy, what would happen to the humongous Mosque/Shrine built in the honor of Khomeini?
If it was up to me, the choice would be clear. I'd turn it to something culturally tabood; like a giant house of ill repute or demolish it to bits and pieces. Idea of a huge public bathroom is not very practical although it sounds very good.
But for at least 20% of Iranians living in Iran, Khomeini is a quasi sacred figure. To these people he is well respected and revered spiritual and national leader.
In your opinion, what should be done to this structure? What would YOU vote for?

I don't agree. Khomeini was a lying sack of ****. As gitdoun ver.2.0 said he lied to get to power. He was going to give people free this and that. No hijab requirement. He was then going to go to Ghom and teach. Not one of these were honest. Those who supported him are and should be ashamed. They should apologize to the rest like all the people who are being tortured right now.
Germany does not have a shrine to Hitler. The have memorials to Nazi victims so they won't forget. We should have no memorial to Khomeini. Instead we should have memorials to his victioms.

by gitdoun ver.2.0 on Wed Feb 03, 2010 10:38 PM PSTIf people believed in khomeini it was in the empty "campaign promises" he made from 1962-1979. And we saw how that went. second, khomeini declared himself wilayat faqhi that position by it's very nature commands worship. khomeini declared that office fulfills all functions of prophethood and imammat. "Amr al Zamman" "Imam" "hazrat" "Mawlana" "Sayedina" honorific titles reserved for anibiyaa/a'ouleeya were lauded on a ordinary cleric. i've seen iranians do tawasul to his grave as if he was ahlul-bayt!! people throw money on his grave hoping their zakat would be blessed. i can go on and on. point is to keep the tomb and remove the shrine hoping people won't worship it is wishful thinking. this false messiah's grave must be destroyed. it must be removed so his cult followers will desist in their worship of him and also to prevent future rally cry for a clerical dictatorship.

Some great ideas
by Faramarz_Fateh on Sun Jan 31, 2010 12:16 PM PSTI really like a few of the ideas shared here! First and foremost is removal of his remains from the shrine. We can take it one step further. How about transferring the bones etc to a grave at Beheshte Zahra, with the cheapest possible tomb stone. People of Iran can decide on what should be inscribed on the tomb stone.
Also, the idea of constructing a wall with names of people this guys murdered is fantastic. sort of like the Vietnam memorial in the U.S.
Perhaps making the mosque into a center for social, political and religious freedom would be nice too.

Khomeini: 20% favorable rating? NO!
by rpRoshan on Sun Jan 31, 2010 02:11 AM PSTFaramarz, I don't really know where you get your figures, but I would bet my last dollar that your statement that "at least 20%" of Iranians still consider Khomeini a "quasi-sacred" figure is way off.
Based on my many visits to Iran over the years (and I have traveled all over Iran and not just north Tehran), I would put the figure closer to 5-10%, with my personal money closer to 5%. I don't know when was the last time that you visited Iran, but believe me, 70% of the population was born AFTER the revolution, and the greater majority of those who participated in our national suicide regret their involvement and despise the mullahs as a breed, specially Khomeini.
For my money, I would put the number of those who consider Khomeini a "quasi-sacred" figure somewhere around 3%-5%. Remember, I doubt that this regime has the support of more than 3% of the people, but that's still a lot of bought-off people, specially when they're the only ones with guns.
A museum of Learing History!
by Maryam Hojjat on Sun Jan 31, 2010 01:49 AM PSTwith the pictures of all patriots who were martyred, killed under torture & rape or lost their lives by the the IRI criminals. About Worshippers
by tabar on Sun Jan 31, 2010 12:53 AM PSTLet them be,
but if their sermons promote discrimination or if they do chants that are discriminatory towards anyone in any way [gender, sexual orientation, religion] then they should be sent to jail immediately. I'm a "minority" of two of the above and I've had enough of their crap, throw them in a cell. They can have their ideas but keep them at home or in their head.
Leave it alone?
by tabar on Sun Jan 31, 2010 12:51 AM PSTI apologise but the people who say "DESTROY IT!!!!11oneone" aren't being rational;
this really shouldn't be destroyed. To be honest when a new Iran comes the laws will make it mandatory for all non-Shi'as and women and sexual orientations and etc to be equal with everyone else which completely contradicts Khomeini and his beliefs, so when people say we shouldn't have a reminder of it anymore well with these laws in place it's not like anyone can say "oh I supported Khomeini doing this or that" if it's discriminatory in anyway because they'll be sent to jail!
Not only that but it's history; you can't just destory history. I say leave it alone and just make the museums or parks etc off the property of the shrine; the best museum or way of preserving something like this is to leave it alone and don't add or take anything from it.
What to do with Khomeini shrine after revolution.

DEMOLITION
by gitdoun ver.2.0 on Sat Jan 30, 2010 11:25 PM PSTGET A DEMOLITION CREW TO CAUSE AN IMPLOSION. DESTROY HIS GRAVE COMPLETELY !!!! ERECT A CITY COUNCIL BUILDING OVER IT SO KHOMEINI CAN ROLL OVER HIS GRAVE A THOUSAND TIMES SEEING DEMOCRACY IN ACTION !!!!! NEXT TO THE CITY COUNCIL BUILDING LEAVE A SINGLE WALL FROM HIS SHRINE WITH NAMES AND FACES OF EVERY WOMAN, MAN, AND CHILD MURDERED AND RAPED BY THE REGIME !!!! So that in 200 yrs from now another phucking mullah can't give half truths and lies to setup another "Divine Government" with himself set as it's Ultimate Divine Ruler.

Leave the grave alone. let the worshipers arrive in peace.
by pedro on Sat Jan 30, 2010 09:17 PM PSTBuild a museum with many halls and rooms around the shrine that bares the pictures and the discription of raped, tortured, killed, hanged, shot and ........... ordered by the man buried in the center of the complex. Let the worshipers arrive and worship in peace, only to have no choice but go through the hallways and rooms with thousonds and thousonds of pictures of beautiful innocent Iranian men, women and children ordered dead by the men they are here to worship. I can assure you many will return in disgust befor they can reach the shrine.
let it stand as a reminder to never ever ever again allow religion and politics mix.

by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Sat Jan 30, 2010 08:21 PM PSTWe do owe it to the Shah but we owe it even more to his father. His shrine must be rebuilt. He was the man who brought us out of the dark ages. Reza Khan aka Reza Shah Bozorg deserves our thanks.
Museum of tolerance and genocide
by mahmoudg on Sat Jan 30, 2010 08:12 PM PSTA very good and valid question that is highly charged among Iranians. I agree that it should be turned into a "Museum of Tolerance and Genocide of the Islamic faith". We should raze the tomb itself and only leave his stone, much like millions of others he murdered. the rest of the acreage should be turned into a park.
The bigger questions is what shall we do with the hundreds of worthless mosques they have erected. all the money they wasted building these useless edifices for what?? when they could erect schools, public latrines, affordable housing, etc. etc. etc. thirty years of wasted opportunities. We owe it to the late Shah to rebuild the Nation he loved so much.
