They basically were able to develop the bomb at the cost of starving the entire nation to death, well, brinks of death. There's ample painful documentation of that. South Korean marxists have a very good take on their cousins in the North.
If it wasn't for the purposes of a "buffer state" for China, North Korea would have been history by now.
Solely based on economic power and means, South Korea is able to economically absorb North in matter of a few years.

by Arj on Sun Jan 01, 2012 05:55 PM PSTDear GR, if you notice, you'd see I said; "...and are actively a part of the political process in almost every democratic country (well, except the U.S.)!" That means in other democratic countries such as for instance France, Italy, India, Brazil.., socialist and communist parties participate in elections and hold parliament seats, whereas in U.S. the term "commie" is a derogatory term and is often used to discredit a politician (as in Obama's case!). It has rather more to do with the prevalent mentality of a society than actual politics!
Dear OY, again, you've lumped up everyone as a monolithic entity and consequently lept on your own conclusions -- with regards to McDonalds! I have already alluded to the roots of such misconceptions in my previous comment below!
P.S. Indeed, as MG put it, the whole international community, and specially working and middle classes in the West, owe a lot to all leftist entities (Communists, Socialists, Social Democrats) and their affiliated unions for major improvements in the social conracts between peoples and their respective governments! It's a matter of fact that concepts such as 40 hr work weeks, seek days, maternity leave... did not exist before manifestation of political left in social activities -- e.g. the norm of 12 hr daily shifts may sound absurd now, but it was a reality up until a century ago!

Korea is that not only there are pictures of “The Leader” in every home and every living room, but as people leave the room, they have to walk backwards such that they never show their behinds to the Man! We used to do that as kids at Emam Reza shrine in Mashad or Masoumeh Shrine in Ghom which was kind of fun, (walking backwards that is!)

Misconceptions and common cliches on Iranian political left
by Arj on Sun Jan 01, 2012 02:00 PM PSTMost people due to lack of information or proper education (and few due to certain political agendas!) do not differentiate between the various institutions of political left (socialists, communists, social democrats...) in Iran, hence lump them all up as "communists!" Not to mention that even communists are of various inclinations with regards to democratic concepts or even the issue of governance!
Subsequently, cliches such as ones mentioned above (and below!) with regards to "communists' choice of residence" assume that all communists should be supporters of every Stalinist, Maoists or even Marxist -Leninist entity in the world and/or ones who claim to be so! Indeed, there are many communists, such as anarchists (not to be confused with hooligans, but the leftist equivalent of libertarians!) who do not even believe in a central government, let alone ones being passed on as hereditary tradition! Moreover, there are those who believe in Socialism without considering, let alone supporting, systems like those of N. Korea or the former Soviet Union plausible!
Nonetheless, such jaded cliches that stem from utter ignorance of their perpetuators, based on their fallacious premises, tend to pigeonhole all communists or socialists into either renouncing their convictions, or being forced to move to countries whose political systems are not supported by an overwhelming majority of them or even considered legitimate! Not to mention that Communist and socialist parties are legally entitled to participate and are actively a part of the political process in almost every democratic country (well, except the U.S.)!
Class Struggles!
by G. Rahmanian on Sun Jan 01, 2012 11:55 AM PSTOf course, "class struggles" existed long before Marx started writing. The first sentence of the first chapter of his pamphlet, The Manifesto of the Communist party bears witness to that. "The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggle." Marx saw the whole history of mankind as evolutionary processes. He calls what the bourgeoisie did as revolutionary and sees it as a class that eventually gives birth to socialist societies. It is the stage where the working class takes over and the wealth sharing by all that the citizens of the free world disagree with. "From everybody according to his ability to everybody according to his needs," is where the disagreements begin. Of course, the concept of communism has become synonymous with dictatorial rule and the lack of basic democratic freedoms. Also the biggest issue with certain organizations is the cultist mentality that prevails among their memberships. Blindly following the leadership is the hallmark of the policies of such organizations.
The Making of the English Working Class
by Mash Ghasem on Sun Jan 01, 2012 11:30 AM PSTIt's lot bigger than Marx and Lenin. We're talking about the working class in the first industrialized nation in the world. No one has any monopoly on social reforms. But overwhelming majority of such laws were put into effect due to the force of the working class. See below:

The Ultimate Irony of History
by Mash Ghasem on Sun Jan 01, 2012 11:25 AM PSTAngali jaan, are we denying the fact that Hitler was propped up to defeat the workers' movement (first in Germnany, and then the world)?
Ultimate irony of history was that the German Communist Party (under the influence of one and only Stalin) went against Social-Democrats, and instead of uniting with them against Hitler; thus spliting the vote and paving the electoral path to power fof Hitler.
That's not (the young) Darwin?
The Social reform was in place well before the Socialists

by Mash Ghasem on Sun Jan 01, 2012 10:17 AM PSTThe "West" actually did everything in its power to push the Nazi army towards the USSR in hopes of a total annihilation of the (degenerated) Workers' State. And it almost came to that point of annihilation for Soviet Union (the Battle of Stalingrade). Only after the victory of Russains in that battle and the consequent retreat of Germans (when the western powers knew beyond doubt, and for sure that USSR was not going anywhere) did they pour aid into Russia. Chech your dates, you'll see what I mean.

Agha jan, with all due respect for individual inititative and hard work (Kas Nakhard Posht Man, Jz Nakhn Angosht Man), as far as social justice, social balance and social harmony is concerned, if you don't have laws and social institutions protecting the rights of all citizens for a minnimum standard of living then very few end up having a satisfying comfortable good lives.
Just compare what living used to be in the West in early 70's and now. Leftists don't have a monoply on social reform, but they have lots and lots of contributions in that field, that's all.

The moment the Red Army occupied Berlin, it turned from a liberating Army into an occupation one. We know the rest and what happened, good riddance!
While we should have no illusions about the collective bureauracracies that ruled Russian and Eastern Europe (and still rule China), at the same time there's an ocean of achievements and great social reforms that were put into effect (in the "West") only and only because of the Leftists' struggles (and the fear of the ruling classes of a social revolution, hence they giving into such social refeorm).

Happy new year Mashdi! I was wondering where you were!
by Oon Yaroo on Sun Jan 01, 2012 09:41 AM PSTI certainly appreciate the struggles and sacrifices and dedications and selflessness of all of our predecessors for paving the road for a better and happier life for us all.
But, I appropriate my own "individual" hard work most of all.
If each individual works hard and becomes successful then all benefits from it.
Providing opportunities for people to take advantage of and therefore reciprocate the same down the road is a good idea but welfare-ism is a bad idea!
Let's see what our friend dear Sharab Sorkh has to say!
God bless and stay thirsty for red wine!
USSR won WW2 single-handedly?
by AMIR1973 on Sun Jan 01, 2012 09:40 AM PSTHere's a list of countries liberated by the US and its Western allies:
France, Italy, West Germany, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Japan, South Korea, i.e the freest, most progressive, and most prosperous countries in the world
And now the countries "liberated" by the USSR:
East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Albania, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, North Korea, i.e. single party Communist dictatorships (the biggest persecutions and killings of liberals, socialists and Communists took place in those very countries)
BTW, the USSR received huge amounts of assistance from the Western allies during WW2 (some of it routed through Iran)
