Attached is a statement sent to press in Iran (files attached in PDF and Word formats). So far three newspapers in Iran have printed this letter with all the signatures. An English translation is being prepared for foreign media. The legitimate demands raised in the statement would be placed on whoever is elected as President in Iran in order to best defend the national interests of the country against the pressures and threats by the international community.

Statement by a Group of Iranian Anti-war Activists about
Iran’s Presidential Elections

We are a group of Iranian academic and antiwar activists in Europe and the United States who, in the past few years, have consistently defended Iran’s national interests in all areas including its right to develop peaceful nuclear technology. Our varied activities in the face of anti-Iran propaganda by the neoconservatives in the West have included organizing press conferences, taking part in radio and TV debates, creating antiwar websites, publishing bulletins and newsletters, writing opinion pieces and letters to editors, attending national and international antiwar conferences and petitioning and lobbying western politicians and parliamentarians.

We have campaigned against the policies of the United States and its Western allies which have unjustifiably targeted Iran – including sending Iran’s nuclear dossier to the United Nations Security Council, issuing UNSC resolutions against Iran, secret and public efforts to provoke strife in Iran and destabilize the country, and threats by the United States and Israel for military intervention and bombing of Iran’s nuclear facilities.

As we approach Iran’s presidential elections, we are duty bound to share the lessons of our antiwar activities and highlight what national policies can defend Iran’s interests effectively in the international arena without isolating it or enduring U.N. sanctions. In order to safeguard Iran’s national rights successfully, we think Iran’s president elect must give priority to the following policies in his programs and plans:

(1) Questioning the Holocaust, which has greatly aided the hawks in the West, must be discarded and replaced with a constructive foreign policy devoid of any provocative rhetoric.

(2) Release of all political prisoners, freedom of press, organization and political parties, as well as peaceful meetings and gatherings. Recognizing the right of all citizens to run for election without any political vetting.

(3) Abolishing medieval punishments, such as stoning and cutting limbs, public executions and execution of minors.

(4) Recognizing full and unconditional equality in all areas for women and ethnic minorities. Recognizing the full citizenship and civic rights of official and unofficial religious minorities.

Disregarding these tasks will seriously hinder the social and political development of the country, and will divide the Iranian people in their resistance against the unwarranted neo-colonial pressure and double standards of the Western powers. It - 2 - will also provide powerful propaganda tools to hawks and their allies in mainstream media for isolating Iran and denying its fundamental rights in international organizations. Taking steps to carry out these measures, on the other hand, will put our country on a fast track to progress, will unite Iranians of all walks of life, and disarm the neoconservatives in their aggressive propaganda against Iran.

ما گروهی ازدانشگاهیان و فعالین ضد جنگ ایرانی در آمریکا و اروپا هستیم که در چند سال گذشته در چارچوب‌های مختلف و به صورتهای گوناگون ــ با نگارش مقالات و نامه ها در جراید معتبر خارجی، شرکت در مصاحبه های مطبوعاتی و مناطره‌های رادیویی و تلویزیونی، برگزاری و حضورفعال در تظاهرات، جلسات و کنفرانسهای ملی و بین المللی ضد جنگ، ایجاد سایتهای تبلیغاتی اینترنتی ضد جنگ، انتشار بولتن‌های خبری، پخش نامه‌های سرگشاده و با تحت فشار قرار دادن مستقیم مجلس‌های نمایندگی و دولتهای غربی- پیگیرانه از حقوق ملی ایران منجمله در زمینه انرژی هسته ای در برابر تبلیغات دروغین و جوسازی‌های فریب کارانه رسانه‌های جمعی غرب و اسرائیل و در مقابل نظریه پردازان جنگ‌ طلب آنان دفاع کرده ایم.

ما در این دوره، علیرغم جوسازیهای شدید رسانه‌های گروهی غرب بر ضد ایران، همواره در خارج از کشورعلیه سیاست‌های آمریکا و متحدین اروپایی‌اش- منجمله ارسال پرونده هسته ای ایران به شورای امنیت، صدور قطعنامه‌های تحریم علیه ایران، اقدامات آشکار و نهان برای ایجاد محیط متشنج و بی‌ ثبات سازی کشور و تهدیدات مکرر آمریکا و اسرائیل جهت مداخله نظامی و بمباران مراکز اتمی ایران- فعالانه مبارزه نموده ایم.

در این روزها که به انتخابات ریاست جمهوری نزدیک می‌شویم، ما وظیفه خود می‌دانیم که تجارب چندین ساله‌مان در دفاع از حقوق ملی ایران در خارج از کشور و درسهای این مبارزات را برای اولین بار با همه هموطنانمان در میان گذاریم تا روشن کنیم با چه نوع سیاستهایی می‌توان شرایطی را به وجود آورد که در آن دفاع مؤثر از منافع ملی در صحنه بین‌المللی بتواند بدون انزوای سیاسی ایران و بدون صدور قطعنامه های تحریم علیه کشورمان انجام پذیرد.

تجارب گوناگون ما به روشنی نشان می‌دهند که برای احقاق پیروزمندانه حقوق ملی ایران در سطح بین المللی، رئیس جمهور ایران در دوره بعد باید وظایف زیر را در صدر برنامه‌های خود قرار دهد:

* سیاست زیر سؤال بردن واقعه هولوکاست که در چند سال اخیر به طور مستقیم و به شدت آب به آسیاب گروه‌های حامی اسرائیل و جنگ‌افروزان متحد آنان ریخته است باید به طورقطعی از ادبیات و تبلیغات دولتی کنارگذاشته شود و سیاست خارجی سازنده ای بدون شعارهای تحریک آمیز اتخاذ گردد.
* آزادی زندانیان سیاسی، آزادی مطبوعات و رسانه ها، تشکلات، احزاب و تجمعات و حقوق شهروندان برای کاندید شدن بدون ممانعت سیاسی از مواردی هستند که نیاز به تضمین کامل دارند.
* مجازات قرون وسطایی از قبیل سنگسار و نقص عضو، اعدام های علنی و اعدام نوجوانانی که در زمان ارتکاب جنایت کمتر از هجده سال داشته اند باید قطعا منع شده و غیرقانونی شوند.
* زنان و اقلیت های قومی باید از حقوق برابر در کلیه زمینه ها برخوردار باشند و حقوق شهروندی اقلیتهای مذهبی رسمی و غیررسمی باید به صورت کامل تضمین شود.

روی‌ گردانیدن از اجرای وظایف بالا نه تنها موانع جدی در پیشرفت اجتماعی و سیاسی کشور بوجود می‌آورد و موجب تفرقه و نفاق در میان مردم ایران در برابر فشارهای زورگویانه و نواستعماری می‌گردد، بلکه اهرم تبلیغاتی نیرومندی در دست دولتها و رسانه‌های غرب برای منزوی کردن ایران و سپس پایمال کردن حقوق کشور در مجامع بین المللی است.

از طرفی با اجرای این وظایف، هم کشور ما در خط سریع پیشرفت قرار می‌گیرد، هم صفوف مختلف ایرانیان در برابر فشارهای غرب متحد می‌شوند و هم نیروهای نو استعماری در تهاجمات تبلیغاتی خود برای اقدامات تضییقاتی علیه ایران خلع سلاح میگردند.
