Scientific Achievements of Iranians in Iran

Iranian scientific achievements are not promoted because of political climate of our time and sanctions that have prohibited our scientists in getting recognition. Also we need to realize that Iran or Iranians who live in Iran are not good at Public Relations and self promotion which is considered arrogant. Given the limited resources and budget of Iranian universities and sanctions, Iranian professors and scientists have accomplished a great deal.

Iran’s economy is controlled by government entities and even these entities and their employees are controlling the private sector. Little support is given to small businesses where many ideas and innovations come from them. This is a huge barrier that we face in Iran.

Iran has many potential. Iran also has enough capital in its private sector and there is no reason, why private equity firms, venture capital firms could not be established with the right corporate governance to help ideas transform into products and then export these ideas to the rest of the world. Iran can easily become an exporter of technology. With less government control and fantastic geographical location, Iranians can take advantage of their brilliant minds and let their own “high net-worth individuals” invest in their own people, so that young industries and brilliant minds can flourish so that eventually Iran becomes known as a country whose contributions cannot be ignored in science, technology, agriculture and other areas. Investment in our own people has to start from within and once small businesses move from being VC's into production of products then foreign investment and interest will come naturally.

A report by UNESCO in 2011 mentioned four Iranians who received the UNESCO Award for their contributions to science. All of these scientists live in Iran and are professors at various universities. The Awardees include Dr. Abbas Shafiee, Tehran University Pharmacology and Medical Sciences Professor, Dr. Mojtaba Shamsipour Professor of Chemistry in Razi University, Dr. Mohsen Nemat Gorgani, Tehran University Professor of Biochemistry, and Dr. Ali Akbar Sabouri Professor in Biophysics at Tehran University.

Dr. Farrokh’s website has the list of Awardees also. //www.kavehfarrokh.com/2011/09/

Yes Abarmard - America is the root of all evil

by Anonymous Observer on

That's why you should immediately pack up and return to the utopia that is the Islamic Republic of Iran. What are you doing in this cesspool of humanity, the U.S., using its passport to travel, using it's financial resources, job opportunities, etc...?!!

In an interesting program

by Abarmard on

It showed how American students lack knowledge and skills comparing to students from other parts of the world but they were the most confident!

Mr. Ala, please provide specific examples

by Anonymous Observer on

And not general statements. ETS is an American company. Science is not just limited to Shaytan -e Bozorg now, is it? Plus, didn't Imam Khomeini say "Amrika hich ghalati Nemitavand bekonad?" Why do we have to rely on them for scientific research and discovery? What about our friends China and Russia? Don't you guys always brag about them standing up to the U.S. On behalf of the great Iranian people? Why not use them?!!!

But again, please provide ONE specific example where scientific research and recognition in Iran have been thwarted by sanctions.  And I'm being serious.  I want to see an example to back up your statements.

MA: weren't you at Imperial

by alimostofi on

MA: weren't you at Imperial College? As long as the world obsfucates Hezbollahis with Iranians, then we Iranians will suffer. Simple. Try to never write a sentence longer than ten words, without a comma. Iranians write in the passive voice. Look at your sentences. Just put more full stops, and write in the active voice.

Scientific Achievements of Iranians in Iran

by Mohammad Ala on

Ali jan, English is not my primary or second language.  I thought the message was understandable.  Once posted, the content cannot be changed.  I did not have time to edit it.  No, I am not a geologist.

AO jan, are you serious?  The topic is serious and the effect of sanctions are many which range from Journals not accepting papers from Iran to not allowing Iranians to take tests conducted by ETS.

There will be other areas which Iranians will get criticized for them .... I guess it won’t be about Iranians who live in Iran who have not contributed to Science.  LOL.

well written

It makes me feel good when I hear scientific advancement related to Iranians in Iran or abroad. One of the good thing about Iranians is their competition that exist among them. That makes them to go forward faster.

Did any of these scientists attend "shab-e-she'er" by any chance

by Anonymous Observer on

Just curious. :-)

Anonymous Observer

Please describe how sanctions prevent scientific discovery and

by Anonymous Observer on

recognition of scientists. Nazi Germany was not only under "sanctions," but it was also being constantly carpet bombed when it invented rocket technology and the jet engine. Iranian professors and scientists are free to attend (and do in fact attend) scientific seminars and have access to research studies, etc. We have doctors in our family in Iran who attend seminars and conferences outside of the country on regular basis. Coming to think of it, they have never complained about sanctions being an obstacle to their work.

So please, in order for us not to consider your claims as just another episode of playing the victim card and / or another usual "naneh man gareebam," please provide specific instances, with specific examples, of scientific discovery in Iran that has been blocked by sanctions. Also, please provide specific instances where Iranian scientists did not receive recognition for their achievements because of sanctions.

PS- If you haven't noticed, your own blog that shows recognition by UNESCO contradicts your claims that Iranians don't get recognition because of sanctions.
